CougarPeasantI could drag up some earlier posts on this subject, but thought starting it all over again would be fine too.
Heaps is starting because Nelson is injured, because Bower and Doman left the program when Hall was named the starter, and because Lark and Munns had poor timing in when they chose to serve their missions and return.
Nelson was recruited because the coaches saw the void at QB once Hall graduated. Nelson was targeted because Prince, at UCLA, turned down BYU, and because Nelson was a "better" fit than a JC QB since he is LDS, an RM, and an already established FBS QB having started at USU.
Heaps will remain the QB this season barring injury. He has had more time in the offense than any other QB on roster not named Nelson, who is injured and out for the season.
BYU went through as difficult a schedule as ever this season, playing 4 teams that were in the top 25 last week. SDSU would have made the top 25 last week or this week had they beaten BYU, which would have made 5 teams out of 7 with Washington having beaten 2 ranked teams themselves. No true freshman QB would likely have done much better than Heaps with that schedule under the same circumstances.
Has Heaps progressed like we had hoped? No. Would Heaps had benefited from a RS season? Yes. Was Heaps afforded the opportunity to RS? No. Would Heaps be starting now had Nelson not been injured? Very unlikely.
I see it that Heaps was thrust into the starting position because there was no better candidate than he for the role given the circumstances. I saw much improvement in his game against SDSU. But then I saw him regress against TCU, which I suspect had more to do with TCU's defense than anything else.
Heaps is now going to play against 3 of the worst, the most putrid teams in all of the FBS and CSU is not much better than Wyoming, UNLV, and UNM. 4 very winnable games. I will expect the team to run the ball down the throat of each of those 4 teams and not put Heaps in a position where he has to win the game. I also expect the game to slow down for him given that all 4 teams have some of the suckiest sucks for defenses that have ever sucked. I expect the receivers to come out of their funk as well against the next four opponents.
Should BYU win these games, which is expected, BYU will be bowl eligible going into the :utard: game and much can happen between now and that game as far as BYU's offense being ready for the SNOT.
