What I think I learned from the TCU game

So there's like nine minutes left in the fourth quarter. On third and two we get a delay of game penalty. On third and seven Jake throws the underneath route again that even were it caught would probably have been tackled three yards short of the marker. On fourth and seven, down twenty one points in the fourth quarter...we punt. Punt.

What does punting at that point say? Does it say we want to win the game? Does it say we still think it's possible to win the game? Does it say we're not going down without a fight?

No. It says the opposite of all of those statements. It says we're trying to escape without a total blowout. It says we concede the loss. It says our offense is totally and completely inept. It says that we now think our defense has a better chance of returning a fumble or interception for a touchdown than our offense does of methodically picking up first downs and putting up points.

But it says more than that. It says that Robert Anae is INDEED the other piece of this puzzle that needs to be replaced after Jaime. I think it's obvious that TCU has been shocked by our defensive showing today. Were it not for that complete one minute breakdown right before the half TCU would only be winning 10-3 right now (unless they scored again since I started writing, but if so, who can blame our defense when the offense has clearly given up? They could pitch a shutout the whole second half and it wouldn't matter. Oops. I just checked. They DID score again since I started writing this.)

We need more changes. Way too much individual talent on that offense for such results. Anae can't seem to gameplan against good defenses.

I had something re-enforced. Patterson is classless. He even had the announcers speechless trying to explain throwing to the endzone. Probably because they had just said he is all about class and wouldn't be trying to run up the score. I am curious how they do next year. I am interested in how they do next year with their main playmakers are gone. Too bad we don't get a shot at them in the next few years since they won't play us now.

As for our offense. You don't attack speed with slower speed. I was calling for Kariya in the first and he showed why. Once we went to quick power we started pushing them around. I see a lot of running plays next week. Too bad we didn't get enough #33 today.

yes that might be a good strategy....but Anae is too stubborn to deviate from his thinking, no matter how bad the results are...

the sign of a good coach is adapting to change, Bronco has shown it, but Anae has completely failed

I was going to open a thread like this one. Things I noticed.

1. Rich is going to be sorely missed next season.

2. Heaps needs more time and better receivers.

3. Bronco is an excellent defensive coordinator and motivator.

4. Chambers ain't no Kerley.

5. The young talent is going to be goooooooooood down the road. Van Noy can play, Stout was good and eventually one of the TEs will emerge.

6. Logan is going to be missed next season.

7. The offensive line could have been an awesome run line if it had been emphasized in fall camp.

8. This has to be the worst group of receivers I've seen since I began following BYU. (That would be close to 35 season)

9. Heaps is going to overcome his poor play this season and turn into a stellar QB.

10. TCU's defense made BYU's offense look bad today and Anae was overmatched.

Overall, this season is a work in progress and the team is simply overmatched by teams with significant senior players on offense, like FSU, UN, TCU. Yet, there are signs that the team will be very good, if not this season, then definitely next.

Given that BYU had sold out to stop TCU's run (very successfully, I might add), it was not classless for TCU to keep passing --- it was the only thing working for the TCU offense. So, TCU hit 31 points --- as if that is running up the score in anyone's book. It is not like Boise putting in a final score in the final minute vs. UC Davis last year just so the Broncos did not beat an FCS school by single digits....

This has nothing to do with BSU. This is about being up by 21 with 4+ min left and throwing TO THE ENDZONE. There is a difference between throwing for the endzone and thowing for a first down. The intent of a "classy" coach would be to run the clock by gaining a first down. So the pass play should have been to a WR for a first not one running into the endzone. That prolongs the game and IS running up the score. A completeed pass to the 15-17 lets them run more clock and the possibility of another first down around the 5-7 yrd line and then the possiblilty of scoring either by running it in on 4th or by kicking a FG. But thowing for the endzone on 4th and 3 from the 21 is not the mark of a "classy" coach. This on top of his disparaging words for BYU inspires me to hope for a complete tumble in the next few years and then a return to mediocrity.

I will really be pulling for Utah against them.

I learned that firing one coach isn't enough...yet. I was too harsh earlier, I think Anae was screwed over by his own program and after a stern warning should be given chances to beat lowlier wyo, csu, unm, unlv and after losing to utah by 30-40 points then make a change...a big change.

Before this game I thought TCU would be unstoppable and play BcS. Our defense stopped them for so much of the game I think Utah will beat them easily and just BS and Yew will BcS.

The guys a competitor. I don't have a problem with the call, and he didn't make the pass. For all we know Dalton decided to just take a shot at the endzone. Can't blame him either. BYU has definitely scored their share of similar TDs.

I'm not going to have sour grapes just because the folks at TCU have sour grapes. (Which is what all this complaining feels like)

Its not sour grapes. It is a coach showing his true colors. People keep saying he is classy, blah, blah, blah, but he has continuously disparage other teams and especially the Y. Keep your opinion of him I don't care but to me the evidences are that he is in fact not a classy coach. I for one am glad we will be rid of the MWC. Let them continue to wallow in the misplaced hope of gaining AQ status. It will never happen as long as things remain the same. And with BSU joining the MWC with Utah leaving, that seriously undermined it. Starting next year TCU and BSU get to know each other off and reducing the pool of BCS non-AQ contenders. The best thing for the non-AQ's that happened was BYU going indy. At least an undefeated BYU will put that pressure back on the BCS to have two non-AQ teams receive bids. But the MWC teams are too short sighted to see that. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Two thoughts:

1. It's not Patterson's job to keep the score down. Would I personally have gone for it on 4th and 3 from my 20 up by 21 midway through the 4th? Nope, I'd have kicked the FG. But so what. If we didn't want them to score, we should have stopped them. I don't see it as "classless" - just a football team still playing a football game.

2. You'll be cheering for :utard: against TCU? I wouldn't cheer for :utard: if they were playing the Taliban.

imua, I agree that his comments were just dumb. I don't know him personally, but he doesn't come across as a classy guy, and I never said he was. Just that he is a competitor and lets his team play.

Classless?- most likely. Just not because of that one play.

And I'm right with you on getting BYU as far away from the MWC as possible. Good riddance.

I didnt get too upset they went for it on 4th. 31 is hardly running up score.

What was very interesting and supportive of the negative press Patterson deserves, was found in his cowardly response in the post game interview. I dont have it verbatim, but when the reporter asked him whyhe went for the TD, he blamed it on BYU. He said because of "the coverage" we picked, it left Dalton no choice but to go over the top. Jack Patterson. Gets my vote for Classless.

Agreed. 8)

My point however, is that the play is another indication of him being classless. I am just tired of hearing color commentators say how classy he is when his words and actions say the opposite.

We have always known his classlessness.....At least he did not wear one of those tight fitting shirts that shows fat ripples and everything else....

P.S. I did learn that even though they are a top 5 team, TCU cannot sell their 45,000 stadium out. I understand from the radio that there were 37,000 fans? Are you kidding me?
