Anyhow, as I suffer through this TCU joke, I'm pretty stoked about the defense but still awestruck that people want to destroy me for wanting to SEE what Munns can do. It absolutely cannot be worse. He's missing almost every pass.

Munns looked terrible in Fall camp. Sack, Sack, Sack, Punt, every time.

Lark, though, will have a real shot in Spring to show his stuff...

Munns? are you kidding me?

A 35 pounds lighter Munns, yes.

Lark will have a shot but not before the end of the year.

If Jake keeps missing every throw beyond 8 yards, I see no reason to stick with him through the entire season.

It would be stupid to play the toughest portion of our schedule and then toss Heaps to the side. We start the cupcakes now, and if the offense doesn't start looking pretty good over the next few games, then Lark and Nelson are going to be competing hard for the starting spot over the spring.

Agreed. I'm not in love with Heaps, but I'm more than willing to let him ride the rest of this season out. We did just face the best defensive team in the country in case you forgot.

I mostly agree but find myself hoping BYU dominates next week early, finishes the drives like they should have Vs SDSU, and gets such a lead, that Lark can get a few mop up snaps - not to down play Heaps - but we may need a backup QB if an injury occurs. In the 4th qtr today at 31-3, when a huge lineman crushed down on Heaps, I found myself wishing Lark was in as a back-up in a game that was clearly over. Perhaps BYU is worried about saving a year of eligibility for Lark - but I hope he doesn't end up needing to take over a winnable game in the next 5 weeks and lose it due to having no experience whatsoever. Heaps has been durable though - he has taken some hits.

Lark already red shirted, so that is not the reason. He was just not ready yet.

I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet on Heaps, but he's had more than an adequate chance to show some sort of spark. His passing rating must be downright horrible and I'd be curious to see how many he's completed for over 10 yards. Yes, he has crappy receivers and crappy play calling to battle against, but the good ones at BYU have just found a way to get it done.

Sure, everyone drools over his arm, but it's very apparent that he is just not ready. I'm disappointed that I've yet to see a glimpse of his 'potential' translate to anything on the field. Can anyone remember a string of two passes in a row where he has wowed you?

He's been given a lot of slack because he's a freshmen, but it's time for him to just step it up. I think the best thing that could happen for him is to go on a mission.

These next few games are going to be crucial to see if he can hack it.

Lawboy - thanks for confirming that. I know Lark was not ready to be the guy and probably still isn't, but I am just hoping a game situation, hopefully where we R winning big, will get him some snaps - in case Heaps gets injured.

Name me one other QB at BYU that looked better than Heaps has given the same situation. True freshman, splitting reps in fall camp, a D coordinator who destroyed moral on the team, 4 starts, the same number of top 25 teams played against, the same number of drops by receivers, the same number of young and/or inexperienced players on offense, the same number of starters from the previous year now in the NFL. The guy looks amazing given how much turmoil this team has dealt with. But, let's not get wrapped up in that. Lets spend our time and energy bagging on a kid and assume that the guy in the wings is no doubt better.

The thing that amazes me about so many BYU fans it that the best player every year on the team is always the backup QB.

I'm not saying that the backup QB is any better (we wouldn't know for sure unless he got some playing time), but I don't think any sane person would say he looks amazing. There comes a time that we have to start judging him by his play on the field and his ability to lead the team--not our visions of his potential based on his high school YouTube videos.

I'd be curious to know if there has been another QB with this many games under his belt that has a lower QB rating since LaVell became coach. I don't actually have the stats at my disposal, but I think you'll be hard pressed to find someone with a lower rating and only 1 TD pass.

Supporting cast and coaching makes a difference but if Heaps cannot step it up against the bottom half of the conference, we will have some serious worries about the future.

Stats aside, I'm not looking for him to carry the whole team on his back to victory, but I would like him to string together some throws which would inspire more confidence in him. He has not been in rhythm at all this year.

He was in great rhythm against USU but our WR/TE's couldn't catch the ball if their lives depended on it.

The only fair comparison is if another QB has been in the same situation. I submit that Heaps is in a horrible situation and doing a pretty bang up job given how terrible the offense is right now.

I completely agree that things won't look good for him if things don't get better the next four games. But to say it is all on him is amazingly myopic. He has his problems no doubt, but the only people helping him out on the offense are the RB's and the O line. The TE's and WR's are complete and utter failures.

Maybe we ought to wait for them to step up before we completely throw him under the bus.

We seem to conveniently forget that he played against the number 1 rated D in the country today. As a true freshman.
S
storminmormon
Chill--no one is throwing him under the bus or laying all (or even most) of the blame on him. But the excuse that he's only a true freshman is getting real old--he only gets a pass for so long based on that. It's time for him to grow up and produce--just like any other player they put out on the field.

I like everyone else is looking forward to the game where he shows some flashes of brilliance (hopefully next week's game).

TCU's defense is only number 1 in the country because of the schedule they have played. They are good. Very good. But they're not the best defensive unit in the country. Heaps has been put in a terrible situation, but like our current commander in chief who was also dealt a bad situation, he's not making it better. He's missing every pass over 10 yards. The only completions over 10 yards are to the other team. At some point, he's got to start hitting the receivers so they can at least drop them. Right now, the passes aren't even remotely close. At 2-5 we now enter the "soft" part of our schedule so I'm hoping to see more completions and TD passes from Heaps and that he develops into what we all are hoping for. But right now we all love Heaps because of his High School career and the reality of the matter is that Munns and Lark both had excellent High School careers as well, so why not at least see what they can do in real game situations as opposed to simulated practices and what not?????

Tough portion of the schedule or not, Heaps has not produced this year. I see no reason why the "cupcakes" will all of the sudden give him 300-400 yard games like Hall could produce. Wasn't USU a cupcake?

True, because our D played so well and our receivers caught all those passes. Heaps sucked in that game, it was all his fault.

In fact everything that is wrong with our offense is all his fault. Heaps definitely has issues he needs to fix. He is throwing behind receivers and struggles with his touch passes. And receivers and TE's are dropping passes that hit them right in the hands. But, yeah, Heaps is the problem.

Someone please explain to my why JJ catches Heaps passes, but no one else does? Is it really because Heaps only throws well to JJ? Really?

You forgot to mention that not only is he throwing behind receivers and struggling with his touch passes, he also throws in front of his receivers, over their heads, and in the dirt on anything beyond 10 yards.

The reason Di Luigi can catch his passes is because they're never beyond 8 yards. Heaps is fine inside 8 yards. Beyond that he's not even close. Ever. Fine maybe once or twice. Maybe.

But he was the #1 recruit in the country, it couldn't be his fault.
