We were lucky to beat SDSU because..

Jake Heap's QB rating was only 107 and Lindley's was 136. Obviously as Mars pointed out, the time of possession was the big key. Kittic, aren't you the one who brings up the QB rating battle in terms of winning percentage? What was the record of the team with the QB with a better QB rating vs the team with a worse QB rating? That will give us a pretty good idea how lucky we were in those terms.

We won because we were the most physical team on both sides of the ball. Our offense wasn't dependant on the Qb so the lower rating was mostly not a factor. His rating would have been much higher if he hadn't thrown that interception in the end zone though and if he had completed that touchdown pass, the game would have never been close.

More than one way to skin a cat.

I think if we're expecting, coaches included, that a freshman quarterback is going to be able to put the game on his shoulders and carry us to victory than we're all pretty delusional.

Heaps is good, but to compare and expect him to perform better than senior quarter backs is a bit unfair to him.

The coaches looked at what they had and came up with a game plan that worked based on the ability of the team. In some cases that may be riding the shoulders of a super-star quarterback,in other cases it may be scheming to eat the clock up with the run and keep the ball out of the hands of the opponent so they just have fewer opportunities to score.

Kinda useless to look at QB rating in a game where it's pretty obvious that we were 95% focused on the run. This has been pointed out time and time again, and some people still want to discuss QB play....

It's almost always relevant to bring up passer rating. And the exceptions only serve to prove the rule. Since 2000, BYU has played 131 games. The team that has had the better passer rating is 114-17 (.870). There is NO other stat out there with a better correlation of winning than that. Time of possession certianly doesn't have that kind of correlation.

Saturday was only the 2nd game in the last THREE years, and just the ninth under Bronco, where the team with the worse passer rating won the game. Of those 17 games where the team with the worse passer rating won, BYU was the victor in only six of them - although five of the six have come under Bronco.

BYU's defense played just well enough to keep SDSU below the 140 passer rating threshold. When BYU gets to 140, they're 55-6 (.901) since 2000. Our opponents when they get to 140 is 8-4 (.750).

But in short, we beat the odds - big time. If you gave me an .870 chance of winning, I'd take it every time.

Ummm...I don't think you looked at the stats correctly.

Lindley's passer rating was 136

Heaps' passer rating was 107

Matt Marshall's passer rating was 234

You average out Heaps and Marshall and you get a BYU passer rating of 170.5

So once again the team with the higher passer rating won the game!!

Perhaps I am being Johnny rain cloud over the defensive performance last Saturday. While I will admit I was feeling absolutely giddy with a 3 and out and an int to start the game I am seeing BYU giving up 21 points in only 15 mins of possession for SDSU, believe it or not that is the worst points for time of possession BYU's D has given up all year. That calculates 1 point for every 42 seconds for the game. The best D performance was the Washington game where the D gave up 1 point for every 91 seconds.

As much as it pains me to say this, I think TCU will still be able to score easily against the D and the game will not be that close. But I absolutely love the new attitude Bronco has infused into the D, I hope it continues to grow the rest of the year.

We won because we had more points on the board at the end of the game. All this other garbage is just nonsense.

And it can viewed another way as well. SDSU was lucky we didn't beat them by 4 touchdowns. SDSU was lucky to get a TD on 4th down. SDSU was lucky their DB made a great play and intercepted the ball. There is lots of luck, good and bad, in every football game.
