Theories behind dropped passes

Every single receiver is either dropping passes or not getting to the spot they need to reach them. These are mostly good receivers, and I will not believe otherwise. Surely they can catch these passes. Jacobson made some really amazing ones the last few years, and Ashworth was a dependable possession receiver. Are they trying? Does this have something to do with independence? This brings me to my list of theories.



1. BYU is throwing games - Some receivers look to be short-arming balls and just not trying.

1.a. Holmoe is having trouble scheduling big name opponents for independence. Having a losing season may help good teams feel safer scheduling us.

1.b. Gambling - Well LV is just down the road and BYU has gone to a bowl there the last 5 years.



2. Offensive players don't like / are jealous of Heaps - Possible causes being that he is a 5-star #1 recruit and the rest of the players are generally overlooked players. The lockergate thing and the fact that he is beating out more experienced players and being anointed as the chosen one before playing a down could be reasons. Maybe they are trying to prove to Heaps that he is only as good as the people catching his passes.



3. Receivers are in a slump - A really, really long one.



4. Receivers are just really bad - A commonly held view on CB. They all must have just accidently caught all those passes in HS to get a scholarship and just miraculously caught passes with Beck and Hall at QB (Jacobson, DiLuigi, Kariya and Ashworth). Highly unlikely, but it won't stop people from believing it.



5. Heaps' throws are too hard, uncatchable - Possible, but his HS and even peewee league teams could catch them. Also very unlikely



6. BYU is preparing to drop the program, and wants to simmer down the program so no one will care when they actually do so - Typical Yewt theory, but who knows?



7. Riley Nelson, Lark, or Munns is greasing the footballs from the sideline - See #2. Except these could benefit much more from Heaps' failure. Maybe a team effort from all the clipboard holders.



8. A Yewt spy is equipment manager and is using a formula called Anti-Stick-Um, developed in the world-famous labs that brought the world the gift of cold fusion. He applies it to all the receiver gloves before the game. It would also explain the fumbles.



9. Craig Thompson bought a voodoo doll for all the BYU receivers and pokes the dolls in the hands every time Heaps throws a pass.



10. Receivers have caught a rare, contagious disease which affects grip and vision (...) - The last thing they caught.



11. Heaps injured his shoulder in the off-season, and became like that kid in the movie Rookie of the Year after the operation. Maybe a good Coleby Clauson sack is order to bring his velocity back to normal.



12. Karma is a real female dog, and somehow she was a fan of the MWC and wanted it to get an autobid. Or at least this is the MWC fan perspective.



Don't take this too seriously. I'm just exploring possibilities. Some are half facetious, though the truth can be stranger than fiction.

Entertaining, but I don't like any of them, and have difficulty buying into any of your possibilities. If the team has a problem with a 5 star recruit playing QB, they need to leave the program, like yesterday. If they can't catch what high school receivers were able to catch, they should give up the football scholarship today, and go back to knitting.



I suspect we'll never know the real reason, it's inexplicable; and I expect as the season progresses, the problem will disappear. Coaches may stop playing receivers who keep dropping balls, Heaps may stop throwing to receivers who keep dropping balls, and everybody will figure out that if BYU wants to win anymore games, receivers better catch everything thrown to them.



If I were a high school senior receiver this year, I would be calling BYU and saying, "I know I can catch better than anybody on your team right now, offer me, and I'm there in January.

I realize that you weren't being serious for most of those, but it almost seems like you might believe these three, and they're absolutely ridiculous. #1 and #2 are so ridiculous that i'm not even going to comment on them, and the reason that #6 is out of the question is that the exposure that BYU football brings to the church is invaluable. We didn't spend who knows how many millions of dollars building a state of the art broadcasting studio to show wednesday morning yoga and re-runs of old conference talks.

I say that the Big 12 came calling but ESPN would not let us out of the contract. Now ESPN has fears that they just signed a big contract with an awful team. ESPN allowed us out of the contract last week after the USU loss. However, Bronco is still holding back (hence the close victory over SDSU) while we wait the official word from the Big 12. Official invite is scheduled for Wednesday and then we move on creaming TCU-Utah winning the MWC.
