Kyle Van Noy and our Defense

I thought he had a very nice game. I'm really excited about his future here. The kid has some serious athletic ability. He had a nice sack and some very nice tackles, including a TD saving tackle.



Oggletree also had a very good game. Bryson is another kid that I've been high on and he had some nice plays. I think he'll turn into a big-time player for us. Very versatile and athletic for his size. Our defense has a ton of talent and improving quickly with Bronco putting his microscope on them.



Jadon Wagner has also been solid for us. I didn't notice Leung-Wai very much today, but I really like him too. We didn't have any glaring weaknesses today and that was very nice.

Uale is a glaring weakness. How many times does he and stevens (the other FS) need to get beat for a touchdown?



But yeah, everything else checked out okay, other than the big plays the D gave up running and passing. (NO TIC)



They held the best passer they have played to date to somewhat acceptable numbers.

Van Noy looked very effective on the strong side filling in for Pendelton. Pendelton seemed to be a lot more effective playing the weak side last year. I wonder if the coaches might consider switching the two.



When I say Pendelton looked more effective on the weak side I am meaning blitzs and pass coverage, basically being able to make plays. He does well on the strong side but maybe a lot of what he does goes unnoticed because he does his assignment and forces the ball somewhere else.

Our defense was better today because we did stuff SDSU had not seen on film all year. We had LBs in gaps, safeties moving around, Bradley ran a corner blitz and rocked Lindley and almost caused a pick. Bronco really more aggressive and mixed it up with teh front 7, and Coach Hill had us in base formations every time. Basically, we were more aggressive and simply tougher to read and it worked. I expect more of the same the rest of the year.

Sweet!!! Bueno!!!

Its good to see Van Noy get playing time and make the most of it this last week. I think with everything he has been through to get to BYU he needed an early taste of success to get fully invested in the BYU system.



I maintain that next year our Linebackers will be dominant. Pendelton, Kavenga, Stout, Van Noy, etc. with Bronco at the helm will be dominant.

I do not mind having a safety be high in tackles. Most D's are geared this way, including the 3-4 where one safety plays closer to the line most plays. Rich is a great pursuit and tackle guy, so that is good. Just don;t want your corners leading in tackles too often because that is typically a bad sign. The ILBs need to get off blocks better still and make more plays. I am really missing Bauman, Hooks and Doman from last year because those guys got it done without all the speed we have this year.
