Game and crowd perspectives

Something happens to a BYU crowd when you are down 1-4 on the season and you go up 14-0 on someone that is supposed to beat you. This crowd was louder than I've heard since our home game against TCU last year. They were involved, vocal and literally hopping out of their seats (thankfully not for any renditions of the popcorn song)



The Defense sprinted onto the field every time it was their turn and I routinely saw multiple Defenders trying to get the crowd into the game. They were pumped and they were all over SDSU tonight. KVN's sack was perhaps the first legitimate sack of the season that wasn't a coverage breakdown.



Turnovers and refs are part of the game, but if anything this should have been a blow-out in our favor. The crowd let the refs have it a few times tonight. I agreed with most of the calls, but thought the ball spotting was particularly poor. One of JJ's long runs looked like it went out of bounds a good 5-10 yards further than where they marked it and there's a separate thread for the replay fiascos but still it was a fun game to go to.

That's just sad. I don't know if it's a talent issue or sucky defensive playcalling, but watch any other game on Saturday and you'll see any good team routinely have players in the backfield about to tackle the QB after 3-4 seconds. For us it happens once or twice a game at best. That is a huge weakness in the program right now. It was encouraging to "hear" KVN make plays behind the line of scrimmage. We really need some playmakers on defense.

I haven't really seen us bring more than 3 or 4 on pass rush this year. You have to bring at least 6 to get one past a lineman, and if a RB stays to block you have to bring at least 7. Like SDSU did multiple times last night. Not sure why BYU doesn't do it more.
