How did Jake Heaps look?

For those of us who couldn't watch the game, how did Heaps look. I know he threw an interception, but was he hitting receivers? did he make good decisions? did he get sacked? Other observations?

He looked okay. We almost exclusively ran the ball.

My sister is single.

I didn't watch the game either, but his stat line was 15-22 126 YDs. Good comp. %, low yards per completion.

He had a quicker release this game, didn't hold it much. This was obviously a time management game and he wasn't called to throw nearly as much.



He had a few misses but the receiver corps was slightly better. I say slighty for yet another end zone drop by Jacobsen. So this wasn't heaps game. Thi was Kariya, diluigi and QUEZADA!!!

I thought he looked much better, though he was mostly managing a running game and short pass game to RBs (since WRs still can't catch the ball consistently). The INT in the endzone was a great play by the DB and a risky pass to make.

This is the playcalling we should have had against Nevada, Florida St. and Utah State.



We win one if not two of those games if we ran this type of offense. Anae gets a pass for this game. I have almost no problem with the playcalling tonight. When you have a rookie qb, you need to protect him with a lot of runs, and short yardage on third downs.



Did Anae do the playcalling tonight, or was it Doman? It looked like Anae was running things, but he did them very well. inside the tackles with our slow guys for power running, screens, play action, a couple bootlegs (though not enough).



Anae - if it was Anae; I still can't really believe my eyes - gets a pass for tonight.

Made some great throws. Made a couple dumb mistakes. Fewer mistakes than in any previous game. He looked like what you would expect from a freshman QB during the last week of fall camp.

I thought he looked pretty good. The pick was a pretty good play by the DB coming off another receiver. He did under throw a sure TD to Jacobson, but I still think he should have caught it. Made good reads, was fairly accurate, did everything he was asked to today.

What in the world was Matthews thinking when he fumbled it? He was running with the ball like he was Deon Sanders. I hope the coaches tear into him. That is inexcusable.



I remember at least 3 drops in this game. Better, but not great especially when you consider the fact that we didn't throw much.

Jake had the best game of his career to date. His receivers finally started making plays, Anae started calling plays with simpler reads (probably to help him out with the 3-3-5), and the other runningbacks finally started putting the team in manageable 3rd down situations--in short, the team finally did what they need to do to be successful with a freshman quarterback--put him in a position to succeed without putting him in a position where he has to win the game with his arm.



He did everything that was asked of him. He had one big mistake, but that's to be expected of any freshman. He wasn't expecting the coverage on the underneath route to break off and back after it cleared the zone.



The biggest thing was finally seeing him start stepping up into pressure instead of running backwards and adding 5 yards to a sack. With his feet going in the right direction, he's going to make more and more plays. Today was a big step forward, but we'll see what happens if we fall behind to TCU early and have to get pass happy again. Hopefully he got enough of a confidence boost today to carry him through what might be a trip to Freddy's boiler-room.

The play-calling was better, considering that we stayed with the run in the first half because it was working (although I bet that was probably the game-plan going into the game and not an in-game adjustment). Anae did get a little too predictable in the 2nd half as SDSU made adjustments to stop the run (they were blitzing like crazy). Anae definitely failed a few times at not calling screens when we needed them and calling screens when we didn't need them. There was a point in the game where SDSU was bringing a lot of guys and Anae didn't adjust his play calling to the pressure they were bringing. A couple screens during that stretch would have kept them honest.



Anae's play calling in the 2nd half definitely sent the message that we were just trying to hang on and not lose. I remember one series where we ran it 3 times in a row and the first two plays, I believe, only gained about 5 yards. Needless to say, we got stuffed and then punted from around mid-field. Another example of the conservative play-calling was screen plays on 3rd and long situations.



Is it just me or does Jake seem to play better when we mix it up with shorter passing plays and longer plays? Just a thought.

Watch that fumble back... how in the hell does anyone run with the football like that? You hit it right on the head, that is unnaceptable. A DiLuigi fumble I don't like, but he is running naturally with the ball, just needs to learn when to cover up and do it. Just natural to carry it in one arm. Matthews honestly looked like he was trying to churn butter, or milk a cow or something. I saw fumble coming a mile away as soon as he starting "fist pumping" with the ball. San Diego saw it too, didn't even go for the tackle.

It was Jake's best passing day of his career -- 107.20 rating beats his 104.37 rating vs UW. But he finally showed some accuracy - especially on 3rd down. He was 5-7 on 3rd down. His rating is still extremely poor on the year at 91.01, but I think he played a pretty decent game. I'll be very please if he can have a similar performance against TCU.

So how does a receiver get through fall camp, and six football games, and get away with carrying the ball this way? I would think that kind of high schoolish junk would be eliminated in about the first two days of fall camp.



Obviously, this receiving corps has a lot of issues, fumblities, dropitis, routeitis, etc. The day these guys earn their pay, step up and make plays, the offense will take off. Drops and fumbles by receivers causes the coaches and the QB to really question throwing the ball, and an offense should never be hobbled by that apprehension.

I thought of something else about Jake. It seemed that he was very comfortable in the first half either changing plays or moving people around esp JJ. I also saw them mix up the snap timing several times to draw people off sides and Jake sells the handoff/ fake pass VERY well, several times I was looking at the wrong guy and so were the cameras. Sometimes the replays only had one or two angles because the camera was following the wrong guy.



You also have to give Jake a lot of credit for those 45 minutes top since he was the one snapping the ball everydown with 5 secs on the clock. I thought he did very well

Jake managed the game and did not hurt us. So, I'd say he did really well. I was just happy Anae managed play calls better. Having said that, I think the reason we are throwing less, play action less, etc is because our receivers are just not separating and making plays, and I think they are trusted less than Heaps right now. I know I trust Jake more to make a play than Ashworth, Chambers, and co right now. Glad we ran it well. Let;s hope it continues next week.

I could be wrong, but wasn't this throw slightly tipped towards the end by the db? Enough that it made the catch more difficult than it looked.
