Is Jacobsen Soft?

This was discussed on the radio a little bit this afternoon and apparently a former unnamed teammate indicated that he thinks Jacobsen is soft. Looking at how he has played his year I actually agree.



I don't know if the cheap shot he took in the Air Force game may be changed him but he has no aggression. The first pick in the USU game was the result of him stopping his route short right in front of the DB. Did he pull up short because he was afraid that the DB was going to lay him out, or was his route really supposed to end right there? We'll probably never know.



I watched him on kickoff returns when Falslev returned kicks and Jacobsen didn't make any blocks and almost looked like he was trying to avoid doing so. Seeing that actually made me realize that I hope we see Falslev and Chambers back to return kicks from now on. Preferably with Falslev catching the ball and Chambers laying down the wood on blocks.



Jacobsen seems to not be able to get off the line against bump coverage and he was non-existent against FSU's coverage.



Has anyone seen anything out of him this season that would lead you to believe that he isn't playing soft?

I'm sure the entire BYU nation has seen exactly what you describe. I'm completely disillusioned with Jacobson. He's done nothing, caught nothing. Let's just call him Charmin.

Seems like he tries to run around defenders on his routes too rather than trying to run through them, almost looking to avoid any sort of contact. I sure miss Collie. That guy would run his route no matter who was in his way.

If this is true, he is going to lose his job to a reciever who wants to get open. I am sure there are guys (Apo) who will work hard at getting open when they get back into the lineup and if Jacobsen really isn't working hard to get open and catch the ball, he will lose his job. Frankly, I think the whole team went soft. I think it is going to get tougher though. I think that Bronco has let the team know that it is no longer going to be soft. Offense and defense.

I was golfing with a "former unnamed teammate" before the season started and I asked him his impressions of the team and specifically asked his thoughts on McKay. He made it VERY clear that McKay is soft and said, "it takes balls to go over the middle" and "McKay didn't have what it takes."



I posted on this topic after the Washington game having payed attention to McKay and his routes the whole game...... Can't say I disagree with the allegations-- hopefully he'll show me otherwise.

I think Jacobsen has soft hands - may be has the best hands on the team to catch the bricks that have been thrown.



I do think every receiver has benefitted the last several years from defenses having to deal with fullbacks, RBs, and dual tight ends that can catch the ball over the middle. That likely resulted in softer coverage of our receivers. Things have changed and the receivers have not stepped up and Heaps is still working on touch, timing, and placement.



If Heaps wants a breakout offensive showing tomorrow the tight ends and backs over the middle R going to need to be hit with enough timing and touch that they can manage to catch it.



Several times in the USU game a back released and would have been open if he turned around. Apparently they were not expected to receive a pass because the back didn't turn or curl in. I just think the coaches R not having Jake risk throwing over the middle. Maybe that has to change so the running game and passing game can get some breathing room.



SDSU will try to make Heaps throw until Heaps proves ge can do it.

Heaps is doing fine. You look like a fool when you blame it all on him. Our pathetic excuse for a receiver unit couldn't catch if it would save their lives'. You look foolish blaming it all on Heaps, do you actually watch the games?

Not sure I would call McKay soft, but I would say he lacks the agressiveness required to go over the middle. No football player is soft, but I have been surprised by McKay's lackluster start. I would say that the BYU receiver as a whole is poor. They can not separate from press coverage, and when a DB plays off, they do not make them pay. The TE;s are worse and less productive than teh WRs though, and that is saying something.



Basically, I have been disappointed with the fact these guys(WR and TE) have not been coached up and shown improvement from week to week. That is telling to me.

And to absolve Heaps of any and all blame isn't productive either. Heaps hasn't been "fine." He's been poor - like just about every other position group on this year's offense. His rating his atrocious. His timing is off. His INT:TD ratio is quite less than stellar. His accuracy is not good.



Now, not all of these things are entirely his own fault, but he hasn't been playing well. At some point production matters when taking into account how a player is playing.



Personally, I think Jake will start playing fine and I think he'll have a productive day today. I just don't know if we we're going to get the win.

Say we add in the absolute 100% drops to his QB rating ... then is it atrocious ? What is it like 3 or 4 touchdowns that have been for sure dropped? I'm sure that would make it a lot prettier. Everyone knows Heaps has made mistakes, but he is a true freshman, and everyone knows it is a lot easier to catch a pass that hits you in the hands than it is to read the D avoid the blitz and make an accurate throw. Therefore the receivers get 70 % of the blame.

Here's how I wish the conversation would go:



Bronco: I'm not convinced we should abandon the outer routes! Is there not a receiver here who still has the courage to do his coaches bidding?

Jacobsen: You wish, now, that our places had been exchanged....that I had gone pro and Collie was playing.

Bronco: Yes.... I wish that.

Jacobsen: Since you are robbed of Collie, I will do what I can in his stead.... if i should return, think better of me, coach.

That's been the most frustrating part of the offense. There have been plays to be made that could have changed each of the games we lost. And we simply aren't making those plays. Whether it's a dropped pass or a bad throw, BYU has wasted many, many opportunities this year.



Eventually though, you are what you are. And right now, Jake and the offense have been very poor. That's a fact, not an opinion.



My opinion is that we'll play better today and by play better I mean actually start to make those plays and start being productive when we have the ball. The timing was awful against Nevada, it was better against USU and I believe (my opinion) that it will better again today.

Read my original post. I did not blame it all on Heaps. It just seems that many posters are so infatuated with Heaps potential that they need to blame our woes all on the receivers, or all on Anae, or all on the defense, or even JJ at times. It isn't just one thing. My post tried to point out several things. First and foremost, the general is a true freshman early in the season and not the senior he replaced that was the most productive QB in BYU history. That makes a huge difference. Heaps is getting the throws in the vicinity of where they need to be and it seems the coaches may be having him avoid going to the tight ends and backs over the middle as he is learning. As he adds touch, precise positioning, and better timing - he may acheive his potential. But, I, for one, don't expect him to be playing like a veteran today, next week, or even at the end of the season. Hopefully, he will be playing better than almost any true freshman in history - i.e. up to his current potential.



The tight ends by committee, like the QB, FB, LB and Safety by committee, is a major weakness. The QB commitee has been dissolved by injury, but we are still waiting for somene to step up out of the other committees. And it is not because they are all so great. It is because none of them are ready yet. So, our TE committee is not quite like having two NFL calibur tight ends. It just isn't. So defenses are not respecting our tight ends and will not respect them until Heaps starts going to them over the middle regularly, with reasonable touch, timing and positioning and the TEs step up, catch it, and punish a LB or safety with some YAC. Then hit JJ, who isn't quite Unga, or our Fullback by committee who isn't quite Manase Tonga or Fui Vakapuna, and the defense willl need to respect that too. Maybe Heaps could scramble once in a while and make the defense worry about that, but we cannot risk an injury to Heaps with Nelson injured and Lark and Munns having absolutley ZERO experience. I have nightmares of TCU sacking Heaps a dozen times and Heaps being carried off the field - due to poor pass protection. I won't go over the defense, which has similar, but fewer experienced talent issues, but also has 2 inexperienced recently promoted grad assist coaches, but hopefully you get the drift.



Our problems are not all Jake Heaps' fault nor are they all Jacobsen's fault or the fault of receivers as an entire group. The entire offennse is sucking - even to an extent our vaunted OL. If any part of this group, including our disappointing OL steps up a notch, it will become easier for someone else to step up a notch because the defense will have to adjust to what is working and slack off something else.



Hopefully - Heaps with passes to the tight ends and passes to the backs coming out of the backfield starts clicking today, loosening the pressure on the receivers just slightly so they are able to step up a notch, taking pressure off the running game so JJ can get back to having 100 yard games, and someone is going to start scoring touchdowns.



If that sounds like blaming it all on Heaps, instead of just having Heaps share his part of the blame, read this again.

Absolutely, I guess he fielded a punt today and just feathered at the end. Sounds girly.

Jacobsen shouldn't have to play over the middle. That's the freaking TEs job. Jacobsen has never played well in the slot. He's not built to play the slot. He needs to get his hands back, though. The drops in the endzone are killing me.
