He's a legit 6'4"; I've seen 6'5" and I've seen 6'3". Doesn't really matter though, he's a 2/3 combo and has the size and athleticism to defend anyone in our new conference at that position.



Too bad he didnt' commit before Kingma verbaled to Oregon. Looks like the making of the perfect run and gun squad in the future.



Harrison is the reason that BYU cooled on Corbin Miller. We have our 2/3 of the future for some time to come.



We just need to find another point guard type (though maybe Anson Winder is the answer) and then go hard at jordan chatman, viko, and rosco allen for 2012; though many of our ball handling problems would be solved for 2011-12 if Kyle Collinsworth decided against a mission. (word is he's close to 100% on a mission)

Bronco has FB 5th. I doubt Coach Rose has BB higher than Mission. I love sports, but perspective is important. Although I sure lose it sometimes.

This will be in hindsight, the easiest decision he ever made...and the smartest.

I'm not Dave Rose and don't think that if i had pursued a career in coaching that BYU would have been a good fit for me. I'm more a win at all costs type of guy (barring cheating; I had a 6'8" power forward recruit lined up for UMKC and Bob Sunvold in 1998 and his mentor and good friend Norm Stewart offered him a scholarship right in his face...I learned that day there is very little loyalty in recruiting and recruiting is 90% of the battle in college hoops ). In fact, my coaching style would probably have been more, dare I say, Rick Majerus than Steve Cleveland, even though I'd let anyone related to Steve Cleveland or Dave Rose marry my daughter, sight unseen (they'll just have to wait 18 years) and I wouldn't share a taxi with Rick. (That goes for any son of my facebook buddy Greg Rose)



I served a mission and so did all 3 of my brothers (as did my dad) BUT I've never been the type to expect a mission from someone with professional ready skills. Kyle Collinsworth will get paid to play basketball someday (as will DeMarcus Harrison) it might not be the NBA, but they'll get paid.



I have no problem if a kid decides to concentrate on their career path and pass on a mission, IF there's little doubt that they're close to having the skill to play professionally.



This does not go for academics (doctors, lawyers, etc.). Very rarely has a mission precluded success in those fields. However at BYU, missions (and marriage) have stalled or even hurt progression athletically. (marriage can be a stone cold killer of athletic progression, just ask McKay Jacobson and Brandon Ogletree... I'm concerned about the fire and effort that Noah Hartsock will give this fall after he got married this summer too)

I'm not sure that Jimmer Fredette could have parlayed his career into a 1st round pick had he gone on a mission... he might have lost too much momentum. (Kyle Collinsworth is more talented than Jimmer BTW, just less polished)



It's a choice and I respect whatever choice they make, but as someone that has worked on a D1 hoops staff, I think it's important to look at BYU hoops in terms of what the player and the team gain by a mission or lack thereof. I guess I'm just not a mission at all costs kind of guy. Seeing the response that there was in the "BYU fan/Not LDS fan" thread, I'm guessing there are others that see it the same way. I respect anyone that goes on a mission but I think no less of those that don't. There are pros and cons both ways. (I understand the commandment part, but i also wasn't an elite athlete (elite in my own mind i suppose til reality set in) staring at a potential pro career, it certainly wasn't a hard decision for me)

Agreed, this is the ideal fit for him and for BYU; An LDS african american that knows the drill about BYU, but possesses elite athleticism and skill rare to find at the Y but perfect for Dave Rose's system.



If any of you remember cougarchat back in the day (long before cougarblue) I hammered BYU for missing on my brothers best friend Nick Robinson. He was the glue guy that helped Stanford have some outstanding seasons and would have been amazing to have at BYU. At the time, Nathan Call told me that they had Justin Weidauer and weren't looking at another wing player.... (huuuuge mistake; might have saved some people their jobs).

Kind of with you on this one. I would basically just leave it up to the player. If they want to go on a mission, great. I'd deal with it. If they don't want to go on a mission, great. I'd deal with it. I wouldn't try to sway them not to go.



I can certainly see why it would be a hard decision to make for someone as athletically gifted as some of these guys are. It was a hard decision to make for me without supernatural athleticism. Glad I went, though.
