New Inside Linebackers Coach Kelly Poppinga (dude looks like an old-fashioned mafia mobster):

"That's my role right now, to establish that culture that's faded away over the last couple of years... It's a culture of playing with phenomenal effort, enthusiasm, flying around, having fun and causing havoc. That's been lost over this season. Last year, it was there in spots. Now, it's got to be re-established. I think really that's my main role right now, to get that culture back that was here 3-4 years ago... It's just like we've turned over a new leaf and we're a whole different team right now. Everything is like a clean slate. We're starting from scratch. In the past, the results have been good, right? So hopefully, by doing those things, good things will happen on Saturday...

As a linebacker, that's you're No. 1 goal — to stop the run... We have not been able to do that once this year. Our pillar is allowing less than 100 yards rushing per game. It's a big emphasis. If they give up one yard, they're held accountable in practice... It was like a bloodbath [Tuesday's practice]. The standard and mindset was set, and hopefully it translates on Saturday...

We've wanted to punch the dude [Bronco] in the face for making us do something over and over and over again... He knows that. He smiles about that. He laughs. He thinks it's great. He's trying to break you and he wants push you to limits you don't think you can reach... That's what's so great about this guy. After [players are] done, they come back to the program, and that's what we appreciate, is that he did that to us. Hopefully, now we can do that to these players — push them to limits where they don't think they can go. Hopefully, it amounts to being successful on the field."

" The BYU defense did not run a single play during practice on Monday, but instead ran sprints and conditioning drills the entire time...

“Before we were just lollygagging around, taking it easy, being spoiled,” [Eathyn] Manumaleuna said. “Now we’re just getting out mind-set right. Coach Mendenhall is very straightforward. He said that we’re going to hate him sometimes, but it’s all just to make us better.” "

Means nothing until we see some good ol' fashion gang tackling on saturdays.

How could this be? I thought Bronco had no heart, no fire. I thought he was an Elders quorum president who had football 5th on his priority list? :bug:

Maybe he forgot to mention where "gainful employment" was on the list.

As always, the proof will be in the pudding. Excellent time to have a home game and be the underdog. I like our chances. If we fail this week it will mean only two things, 1) We don't have sufficient talent in guys that were expected to perform better; or 2) coaching is an issue. I realize we've lost a few starters, but we've not been decimated and that is part of the game. We lose Saturday and my focus goes to basketball because this will then only be a rebuilding year and most likely we don't make a bowl game.

Awesome at one level but extremely unsettling at another level. How disengaged was Bronco that he would allow his team to fall that far below his standards for effort? Tuesday sounded like it should have been the first day of fall practice!!

that is why he was forced to fire hill. Hill's attitude made it nearly impossible for bronco to get involved. to do so would cause rifts and problems. he just had to go.

Agreed. I've been concerned about this all year. In almost every interview Bronco was saying in interviews that he hadn't attended many of the defensive team meetings or that he hadn't spoken one-on-one with some of the key players, and I think that distance between Bronco and the front line troops allowed the other coaches to take their foot off the gas. Bronco acknowledged as much right after he fired Hill so now the question becomes: how long does it take for the team (particularly the defense, but I believe the offense will experience a similar situation) to get back on track and make up for all the lost time? A re-commitment to 'fanatical effort' alone may be enough to beat SDSU at home on Saturday but we've lost a Lot of time already and I don't think effort alone can make up for that, especially on the road against good opponents.

These comments reinforce my feelings that Bronco has severely overestimated 1) the level of player leadership he has had on his teams and 2) the level of involvement he personally need to take.

He fully bought into this flywheel idea that once he got the program in motion he would be able to step away and it would be perpetually successful. It's taken him several years, but I think he's realizing that he needs to be involved at a personal level every year.

I hope he realizes that if he does this, he can just restart the flywheel at the start of each season and not just rely on it being started from the get-go.

Also illustrates how much Bronco likes his current job and how he wants to keep it long term, not very short term.

Yeah, ironically that is 2nd on the list, tied with family. Or some people include a "yob" as a subdivision of the family, cause they need a roof over their head as much as they need love. I think quite a few of the coaches "mis-remembered" that, and they remember it now.

Yep. 800+ ... allegedly ... though it is a private contract with a private institution so nothing has been posted officially.

Bronco has been listening to too many Stephen Covey CDs in his Ken Garf Dodge. it is a true principle while leading, you will want to eventually delegate all matters to your managers. In this case Bronco had every reason to believe Hill and Anae had mastered their jobs and could operate independently and free of directive. Just look at the 08' and 09' teams. They were excellent teams with great offensive and defensive numbers. The problem with this leadership theory is that i don't think it accounts for as much turnover we have had in players from missions and graduation and injuries. When those things happen as much as they have this year, Bronco needed to recognize that he would have to change his leadership style and be more hands on. But he was fooled by the first game success. My only knock on Bronco is that he should have never let position battles carry past the first week of fall practice. That's his mistake.

Well, yes, but his First Mistake before that one was to fall in love with a guy that doesn't fit our offensive scheme that has worked so well. Then allow the thought to even get passed around that we could change everything we've done and recruited in years past for one guy. That lead to the mistake you are allude to.

Exactly...Unless of Course Bronco recieved some sort of under the table kick back from Riley Nelson's family for untold millions if he blindly starts him against all reason and logic. In that case, it was an excellent decision by Bronco to start Riley.

From what I have been told his total earnings with endorsements is about 1 million per year.
