Speaking of SDSU - there is a game Saturday

Really - there is: Scouting Report below -



SDSU at 3-1 sounds formidable at first blush after whipping USU 41-7 two weeks ago and having a bye week to get ready for us. And they might be formidable. And, they might not be. SDSU has certainly learned a little about OOC early scheduling. Instead of taking whippings at UCLA, USC, etc., they played some winable games.



Beating Nichols State 47-0 at home may not proven much. Beating NM State on the road 41-21 shows that on the road against a weakling, they are at least a team you could score a few points on. The narrow loss 24-27 at Missouri sounds like a moral victory - but Missouri has not beaten anyone of substance unless you count Illinois who hasn't beaten anyone of substance. It is the trend in BCS conferences where everyone is playing Northern Whatever followed by Southern Whatever followed by North East Whatever. And the whipping of USU was at home.



Add our injuries and turmoil to our ineptness demonstrated thus far - and things do not look good for us even in Provo. But we have a chance. Let's hope the team plays with confidence and inspiration Saturday evening in Provo.



I will take the risk of repeating the highly ridiculed projection I made before the USU game about the USU strategy to beat us. USU did shut down our running game and force us to beat ourselves with the pass. SDSU will try the same thing. They will try to stop our running game and make Heaps and our Receivers beat us with the passing game until BYU proves Heaps can consistently make the throws with sufficient accuracy, positioning, timing, and touch and the receivers prove they can catch it, hang onto it, and maybe even get a little YAC (yards after catch). And that collectively, this gets the ball in the end zone.



SDSU will also pound the ball down our throats on offense until we prove we can stop the run.



Maybe we step up on both sides of the ball and the Special Teams has a banner, home-field type outing like usual. Maybe not. I don't have a clue how BYU will react this week - but I do think we have a chance.

I'm with you. With Bronco at the helm of the defense once again I think we finally see some passion, if not great execution.



I'm going with BYU by 14.

The hardest part about this whole SDSU game is getting my hands around the fact that SDSU might give us a competitive game, and could actually win. It just seems like such a contradiction to everything any of us has ever known.



It would be sort of like living in the middle ages and learning the world wasn't flat, but round. Very troubling.

I rank our opponents, so far, in this order - which gives me faint hope - - but hope nonetheless.



Air Force Academy

Florida State

Nevada Reno / University of Washington tied

San Diego State

Utah State University



We beat UW even though they largely beat themselves in Provo. We had several chances to make the UNR game competitive. So, at home - we flirt with being competitive. AFA, FSU, and USU were on the road. Thank goodness SDSU is not.



IF we can manage an inspired effort at home with significant, but imaineable improvement on th eoffense, and the defense makingslight improvments even with our injury toll - we cna beat SDSU. Stranger things have happened even given the bye week SDSU has had for extra preparatoin. With Bronco stepping in to perhaps change up the defense - maybe that will have hindered SDSU from knowing exactly what to prepare for on that side of things.



If the passing game starts clicking - I don't think it matters how much prep SDSU has had - BYU will beat SDSU if Heaps and the receivers start connecting with consistency.



Maybe we get an old fashioned SDSU / BYU shootout 58-56 BYU. I would take it.

You obviously didn't go to BYU from years 2000-2005.

I'd love to think this is the week where we get fired up and actually play to win. But I can't get over the fact that Jake is limited to 2 great drives per game, which is where the 15 pts/game comes from. He seems to finish halves well but there is nothing doing up until those points in the game. Therefore, is it possible for this D to hold SDSU under 15 even with Bronco in charge? No, I don't think so.

Should BYU try running the 2-minute offense with 15 minutes or less left in each quarter? :bug:

Seriously, they had moved the ball good when doing just that.

I will be shocked if BYU does not win this saturday. I think Bronco's firing of Hill will have a greater upside than any of us imagine. I think the BYU players do have a lot of pride, but they are kind of slow learners this year. Heaps is going to have a breakout game--eventually. Receivers are actually going to catch passes--eventually. The defense is either going to shut somebody down, or die trying. I doubt this is the first time Heaps has seen a 3-3-5, and I don't think it changes a whole lot either. We used to run the 3-3-5, and teams passed on us like crazy.



The telling this is going to be what our offense does on its first possession, and what our defense does on SDSU's first possession. It's time we take the opening kickoff and drive the field and score, then our defense delivers a three and out, and Heaps hits somebody, anybody, for a long TD.



I watched part of an NFL replay last night, the receivers are always covered, but they just go up and get the ball--something our receivers have completely failed to do this year. At some point they will learn, if they ever want to win another game, they will have to do that, just go up and get the ball, make a play, pull it in and make the catch.

I don't see a way we win this game outside some miracle. If Bronco can inspire the defense enough and if the offense can put it together (finally) and we win this game, there should be a movie made about it. I fear a 3-TD loss. You know things are bad when the "realist"-hating, coolaid-drinking blue-goggled homers predict big blowout losses.

BYUTX...nobody has scored 45 points on us this year, not FSU, not Nevada, not AFA. No, SDSU is not going to score 45 on us, and certainly not this week, and not at LES, and not on homecoming, and not after all that's transpired this week.

Or 1990-1994.



My prediction is SDSU 34, BYU 20. Since BYU is playing at home, I think they break the 20-point mark, but I'm still not confident enough in the offense's ability to manage a game well enough to keep the defense off the field.

We are going to lose this game unfortunately. Tehre is always a chance of winning but most arrows point to a loss.



we just have to much inexperience. having bronco on d will increase the effort this week but i don't know how much it will change execution given our youth.



also our offense hasn't had anythign change. why should i think anything is going to change. if we could only put up 10 point on utah state why do we think we can put up anymore against long's 335 with a freshman quarterback.



I am hopeful and optimistic as I always am but i would never bet my own money on byu this weekend. all i can hope is that sdsu is over confident (did i really just say that?!).

I am going to predict the same thing I predicted last week against USU. if SDSU scores more than 25 on us we lose. I don't even think that we win if we give up 20. Our offense has proven NOTHING this year. We scored 23 in the opener but that was with Riley Nelson able to put the ball in the end zone a couple of times and we don't have him for red zone offense anymore. I hope that the fire that the defense will have this weekend will inspire the offense too but I have no hope of that until I see it. I have 2 predictions

Nobody has needed to score 45, they are already up 3 TD at the half. If we scored even into the twenties, I guarantee that Air Force, and Nevada would have scored 40+.

Yeah I am being pretty wishy washy on that huh :) The problem is, I want them to get this thing turned around really badly and don't have the heart to predict a loss, but I don't have any faith that they are good enough to do it. My wish is the BYU prediction, my reality is the SDSU one. If I were required to make an actual prediction as to what I think the real score will be closer too, it would be the SDSU wins one.
