Mike Leach for Offensive Coordinator

I know there is no vacancy....yet, and I'm just throwing it out there because it's a little crazy and a long shot, but the dude can put together some crazy offensive numbers (Texas Tech) and has BYU ties.

Not gonna happen. First off, Bronco won't want that looking over his shoulder. Second, Leach may be a BYU grad, but he is not exactly a BYU guy these days. Lifestyle matters, and I do not see him really wanting to be in Provo. And third, if we are gonna start over, do it with a new scheme--not more of the spread. Time to go pro-style. We have the QB, have the line to do it, and really should have the skill players to make it work. I know the trend is to move away from it now, but NFL teams still use it for a reason--it works.

I don't know why people keep thinking Leach is a viable option for BYU. He doesn't fit into BYU's culture at all. He would not fit in well with Bronco's style of coaching. Hill got fired because his coaching philosophy and Broncos did not match. Leach's coaching philosophy is an even worse match then that.



It's not going to happen.

Can we drive a stake into this? BYU will not be hiring people who abuse the word of wisdom, no matter how smart they are

Do people really think that Mike Leach would take a job as an offensive coordinator at a non-BCS school? It's either head coach or OC at a high profile school for Mike Leach.



Plus, I agree with the idea that BYU should to veer back toward a more pro-style offense, like USC, Stanford, and Washington.

BYU won't offer and Leach wouldn't expect. Not going to happen.

Rumor is that Leach is back to being an active member of the church. Having said that, the coaching philosophies vary way too much to have a cohesive coaching unit.

I have an idea for OC. How about Mike Leach? I heard he's active now and it'd be really awesome to have him.

I can't imagine Leach ever being hired by BYU; he's too much of a maverick, kind of a goofy guy, a bit of a loose cannon, a bit undisciplined, and....no, he won't get the call. There are a lot of very good offensive coordinators out there, I don't know who the LDS one's are, or the non-LDS who could fit in at BYU, but there must be some. Anybody have a short list, without Leach on it?

Nobody has mentioned Gary Crowton. He's had some success as an OC.

I was just throwing his name out because maybe it's time to look outside the traditional mold. The odds are about as good as us going to a BCS (any year), but it's fun to think about.

Well, below is a list of OC people that should be considered:



Charlie Stubbs (actually was on the short list after Crowton left, and was again thought of as a possible OC candidate 6 years ago.)



Danny White, just cause he has experience and is LDS.



Anyone on the Oregon offensive coaching staff (they can score on anyone).



Aaron Roderick (don't know if he'll leave to be an OC at an independent when he is the co OC at a Pac 10 school)



Ben Cahoon (he should be on staff somewhere, more than likely receivers coach.)



Ty Detmer (lack of actual coaching experience)



I'm sure there are other ones. These are the ones off the top of my head.

Of all those, Ty Detmer is the most attractive to me. He knows the West Coast Offense like the back of his hand, spend 14 years in the NFL as a backup QB, where he was known to be like a second QB coach. Steve Young even recommended him to the Atlanta Falcons to tutor Michael Vick--not as backup QB, but as a QB coach. Sure, he doesn't have formal coaching experience, but he's the son of a coach and the OC job really requires a combination football knowledge and sense more than anything else. I think Ty Detmer has instant street cred with any offensive player at BYU, and I'd trust him to implement an unstoppable WCO.



Another unmentioned candidate is former Louisville and Tulsa coach Steve Kragthorpe.



On the defensive side, I believe former Dallas coach Dave Campo has ties to the state of Utah.



As to Mike Leach, BYU has a better chance of landing Brian Billick as OC.
