Assistant Coaches and GA's.

Bronco stated that some of his graduate assistants will be shuffled around now. I know Shaun Nua is one of them that was mentioned, and he has been helping with the D-line, along with coach Kaufusi. Now that Brady Poppinga got promoted, I wonder what position he will focus on? I find it hard to see him being the DB coach. It would seem to make sense to move Coach Howell to DBs and let Brady work with the ILB's. And where will shaun Nua move to? Anyone have any inside info on this?



Also, we now have 1 more GA position to fill. Any ideas on who it should be? I vote for Chad Lewis and let him train that underachieving TE group. It needs to happen. The lack of production from that group this year has been devastating to our offense. The fact chad and bronco were together for the coaches show 10 days ago raises my hopes for this.

I would love Chad Lewis on the staff. He should be put in charge of all recruiting. I love the guy, he has such a positive spirit and loves BYU. IMO, he could get anyone to come to BYU with that infectious attitude of his.

I would love Chad Lewis but I would have to believe that the new GA will come on the defensive side of the ball. With all the shuffling in coaching on D that's where I expect the GA to be placed. With the secondary for example.

Could we get a GA and a few angels in the backfield?

I think Bronco said during the press conference that Howell would be moved to the DBs and the Poppinga would be with the LBs, OLB according to Drew Jay's tweet.

I get moving Poppinga to OLB, but wonder what experience Howell has with DBs. He is Bronco's latest promotion in the summer, so I expect he gets time to prove his worth at that position. Let's hope the team responds. i expect them to get nuked in practice--injuries or not. They need seasoning. This team plays gutless, and as a player, I sure hope they take that personally, because it is about as big of an insult a coaching staff can level at you--to lack heart. But Bronco totally called them out on it.

Bronco's statement about coaching position adjustments with Howell (Def. Sec.) Nua (ILB) and Poppinga (OLB) is very telling.



He stated that he "...wanted these former players in such positions because the know exactly what is expected from him".



Look for more former players of his to be considered for positions as they previously bought into his defensive philosophy.

Kelly Poppinga - formerly DFA now OLB Coach.

Shaun Nua - formerly OGA to DGA

Nick Howell - formerly ILB to DBs

Kelly Bills - formerly OI to OGA

Jason Walker formely DI now OI



Paul Tidwell and Steve Kaufusi will remain in their same positions, having been with Mendenhall since Bronco became DC.



I don't think he will pull the trigger with the Offense this year - but OC may be the next major change along with a new DC as Mendenhall already has admitted that handling the two jobs previously was too taxing.

Bronco is a defensive coach, so not surprised he made moves here first. He has basically been hands off with the offense for 6 years now. He basically never goes to offense game planning sessions, never to offense meetings, never involved in any situational play calls. Might be good if he did once a week to make sure his message gets across to both sides of the ball. Just sayin.

This has been one of my complaints of Bronco. The offense hasn't had the same mentality as the defense. When you're winning games, it's not a problem since winning covers myriad ills. But when you're losing it's clear the team can fracture. I think Bronco needs to get more involved in the offense.
