What Will It Take To Beat SDSU?

The Aztecs have not beaten the Cougs since 2005. Serious motivation (i.e. USU/AFA).



Couple of important stats:



7th in Country for total offense

12th in Country for scoring defense



WR Vincent Brown 24th in receiving yards (332) - 177 yards agains USU.

RB Ronnie Hillman is 3rd in rushing (532 and 8 touchdowns)



With Bronco taking over the D - looking to right the ship - I believe he will have some schemes employed that may surprise SDSU. We stand a chance if he can keep the score from us being down 24-3 at half-time and give the O some good field position and not having to throw 50 times to catch up and get into the ball game.

SDSU also had a bye last week giving extra time to heal up and prepare.



SDSU will make the BYU D prove it can stop the run. On the other side of the ball, SDSU will shut down the BYU running game and make BYU prove that Heaps can play pitch and catch with enough receivers, ends, and backs to get the ball into the endzone.



BYU needs to play like this game is the season.

Until the offense can move the ball, and more importantly put it in the endzone there really doesn't need to be any other discussion. 13 - 16 points a week will not win us many games.

at this point a blooming, freaking miracle.

A miricle. Coaching is fair to poor at this point on both sides of the ball and add a very young teams mental lapses/errors. In my opinion Heaps is throwing the ball well but you have to have recievers that can catch which we obviously don't have. What's funny is Heaps High School recievers could catch his throws so what's the issue? Again, IMO, Coaching and expectations. When I was playing HS ball if you got two hands on the ball and didn't catch it you ROAD THE PINE!! Didn't matter if you were a senior. Needless to say we didn't have many dropped balls. Funny what expectations and proper coaching will do.

In which case, we cross the streams and hope for the best.

It will require an intense week of practice and focus. It will require our players to play up to their potential for four quarters. If we wrap up our tackles, play our assignments, and catch our passes, then we're in every game this year. It's tough to watch, yes, but the problems of this year aren't insurmountable.

The entire 2006 offense and defense come back and suit up in disguise?

This team needs to play with more urgency, more physicality, more heart. When I watch this team play, it seems as if they are just going through the motions, and not out there playing to make plays, physically match or top the opponent, or laying it on the line. They are just playing like you might in a pick up hoops game. The core fundamentals of a Bronco defense is based upon effort, and it just is not there right now and it is clear to see.



I know Bronco says he can influence the D more, but he also needs to instill that focus on effort with his offense. In particular his O line. They are big enough to dominate, but they have let smaller teams out hustle them and push them all over the place this year. With more effort, that simply can not happen.



This renewed focus on effort needs to be used for every position on both sides of hte ball, not just D. Let's hope that message gets across.

BYU is going to be 1-6 after the next two weeks, that is a given. I would be very suprised if they beat either SDSU or TCU so I am (as a fan) conceding those as losses. Now to the point of this post.



Bronco; his press conference explaining why coach hill was fired is a shot across the bow of the entire team. Read Vic So'oto's comments, he is "scared" since Bronco's defensive practices can be so intense. He said that no other firings will happen "during the season" which didn't eliminate that there would be firings after the season. This is a shot across the bow of the offense, in other words "fix it or you could be gone after the season" I expect the intensity level to improve on both sides of the ball. The defense is obvious. Bronco will not have a defense playing with no heart, it won't happen. The offense is going to start playing more intense too feeding off of the defense and also coaches all know that their heads will roll if they don't get the intensity on the O up. BYU may lose the next two games but IMO it won't be as bad to watch since you are going to see guys laying it on the line during the games. IMO Bronco may salvage this season with this weekends changes. even if we go 1-6, if we win the next 4 games, then the utah game could be a good way to end the season if the improvements lead to a win against them.

Oh, and as far as football goes, isn't basketball season right around the corner?

I think one thing that will have to happen is the play book needs to open up before we are down 27-0. There has to be at least a yellow light, if not a green light, to occasionally throw the ball down field and over the middle.

Second half of USU was mostly long throws down the field. didn't work, problem being of course that BYU didn't mix it up, gave up on the run, and decided to put the game in the hands of a true freshman playing on a team with confidence issues. I have no problem with the short passes (especially after watching the miami BYU game highlights) but mix it up a little, PLEASE!!!

Good teams set up the passing game with great running. BYU never really tried that in the glory years, but BYU was mostly an underneath passing team then as well. Loads of crosses, slants, skinny posts, etc. Do not see too much of that in this BYU offense, and we rarely throw over the middle. But when we do, it tends to be successful. BYU can run it now and should try to do so. Get those big uglies to fire off the line and assert themselves. If they can, we control more clock, put less pressure on a QB(100 passes in 2 games with 1 TD pass--really???), and become more effective because they become tougher to defend.

Amen to that. Look what happened to Houston and TTech without the run game. Prolific passing, but no running game. When defenses stopped the pass, they couldn't do diddlly squat.
