Bronco - Mythology vs. Reality

I think we all know that BYU wins when they have a good QB. Bronco has had 2 NFL QB's. I don't believe he recruited either one (I could be wrong). This is why Phil Jackson is the most overrated coach in history (this is coming from a Laker fan), as he has had Michael, Kobe, Shaq, Pippen, etc., and why Jerry Sloan (coming again from a Laker fan) is probably the best in the NBA.



Listen, I love how Bronco runs a program. I don't love the X's and O's on the football field. We need to realize he is not as great as we thought he was 2 months ago, and he is not as bad as he seems right now.



Lets all see how Bronco does with a bit of adversity and humble pie. Here is hoping he does it with class and vigor, and let us see what kind of turn around artist he can be.

First off, Hall was a Bronco product--he was at ASU and decided to transfer while Bronco was the HC. Second, have you seen the past few recruiting classes compared with what he inherited? If anything, I would think the best is yet to come after what was obviously going to be a rebuilding year. The sky has fallen on this season, but I think we are getting ahead of ourselves to ask Bronco to reinvent himself.

Bronco can coach. I think this season he really wanted to see what his coordinators could do with full reign while he focused on being the head coach. Unfortunately, they weren't ready and Hill has been let go because of it.

I agree 100%. Bronco has been slowly giving more leash to the assistants over the past couple of years. He is also not one to second-guess decisions made by these guys in the heat of the moment, rather preferring to deal with it after the fact. I've been waiting for him to take over play calling during the game, but he hasn't done it. I'd put down big money he has been dying to, but in the end knew letting it go was the only way for him to see what he really has at assistant. Apparently enough was enough on Friday.



I find it interesting that Anae is on the sidelines again after spending a lot of time in the booth (like the last season + or something?). I think he is on borrowed time, too. Would Bronco trust Doman to move to OC? Doman is Bronco's kind of guy...but is he capable of running the entire offense?

You know how to welcome a newbie to the board. :) I won't get into Phil Jackson since this board is about BYU (and yes I know I brought it up).



I love Bronco and the tradition he has brought back, embracing the honor code, etc. He is awesome and there is nobody else I would rather have as our head coach. But to say he is a good X's and O's coach is not accurate. Everybody who scouts BYU well knows to play the press man defense and BYU doesn't have the playmakers to beat it. TCU and Utah do this every year against us. That is why even in a down year Utah can hang with us, when our offense should be hanging 35+ on them. You have to go over the top to beat it, and we don't challenge it and instead run the short crossing routes. It is analogous to a defense putting 8 in a box, and then continue to run it straight up the gut. It is a chess match. You can always tell the teams that have done their homework and those who haven't against us.



Final comment, have you seen any half time adjustments so far this year??? Whit is actually a pretty good X's and O's coach but doesn't run the program Bronco does. I would still take Bronco any day of the week. Here is hoping we get some good coordinators to help with the scheming.

Actually, I have seen second half adjustments in the past three games. I have heard that bronco has been in large part responsible for the better second half showings on defense. Also, another reason for hill's citing may be that he wasn't taking bronco's suggestions for adjustments. We may see an entirely different approach this week against sdsu and I gaurantee there will be adjustments if they are needed. My bigger worry this week will be how our offense handles the sdsu d that has prepped for two weeks. I bet bronco is heavily involved on both sides of the ball this week.

Good points BYULV. Staying positive right now is not the easiest. :) I hope we will see some adjustments for TCU and Utah coming up. In years past, I feel like we are always out "schemed".

That's because Bronco is a defensive coach, he leaves the offensive X's and O's up to his OC and company.
