Poll: Was firing Hill a good move?

Wanted to see what folks thought.

I don't like it. The defense certainly has issues but so does the offense. Why single Hill out? Why does Anae still have a job? The defense has also been destroyed by injuries, is that Hill's fault? Maybe I am way off, maybe something went down behind the scenes that made it necessary, but it smells to me like Bronco is scapegoating Hill for the problems this team has.

Bronco is taking control of something he has the ability to fix. Name me a bronco mendenhall defense in the last 10 years that was ranked dead last in stopping the run. That's right, you can't. Even in 2005 when we had that terrible 3-3-5 defense, they stopped the run, they just struggled with the pass. You knock 100ypg average off of what we have been giving up on defense against the run and BYU is probably 2-2 if not 3-1. This defense is terrible and Bronco is trying to fix it. Maybe it isn't all coach hills fault that they are this bad but I can guarantee you that they are going to get better with Bronco calling the shots.

At first, I was disappointed, thinking at worst, he should merely be demoted. Upon reading other comments on the net, including Dickson's article re: Hill's firing, it sounds like the right thing to do for the team and the future of BYU's defense.



Bronco gave Hill the responsibility and the control over the defense and his efforts have been very poor this season. There is way too much talent on this team to give up 24 points to USU in a game, let alone in a half. And after playing the 5th straight mobile QB, Hill should have had an answer. He didn't.



Good luck to him. He'll find another job. As they say in the coaching world, there are two types of coaches, those that have been fired and those about to be fired. It goes with the territory.

For ease, i numbered your questions above in the quote. Here are my thoughts.



1. This was as much about off the field issues as anything. However, overlooked in the offensive woes is the fact that our D should've been the strength of the team, especially the secondary. See McGregor's thread.



2. Because Bronco is a former DC and can shoulder the burden. I don't want him doing much with the offense. My guess is that anae will finish the season and then get the boot unless: 1-there is a miraculous turnaround, 2-there is a readilty available option to replace him on the current staff, or 3-there is someone out there that could come on mid season. My guess is that none of these are true.



3. Obviously no, but aside from Thomas and a few bumps and bruises, his secondary has been relatively healthy. Hill has done the least with the most far more that any other unit save perhaps the TE's.



4. yes-there was one thing in particular and several other underlying issues; No-no scapegoating here

I hope the best for Hill. And I will do so for Anae when he's gone, too. As long as that "best" is elsewhere.

Hill is a good coach, great secondary coach but could have been over his head as DC. Demotion could have been good but very difficult to make it work with personalities and feelings. Sometimes good people get promoted to a level of incompetance and then get fired.

I would replace our OL coach with the one at BSU.

When your defense is dead last in rush defense in the country it is time for a change. The question is when the offense becomes dead last in scoring do you also fire the OC?

Way too early to know if it's a good move. Personally, I would have started with the offensive coaches. I've been clamoring for years that Bronco has been too hands off on offense. Sure, he's not an "offensive" coach, but the offense has lacked Bronco's imprint, his passion, his mentality. It's time that changed.



At this point, I can't find a reason why removing Hill was a bad move. The defense can't play much worse. I don't think it was a bad move, and don't know if it's a good move yet.

Only feel it's a good move because obviously Bronco and Holmoe thought it was the right move.

Anae, Higgins and Anae (fire him twice ;)) I'd say just those two for the time being.
