Bronco will run the D with addition of Kelly Poppinga

Not only that, but Jaime Hill told Harmon he will be with a new team in a couple weeks. This could possibly be a part of the firing IF Hill has another team lined up.

I wonder is a reshuffle in the ranks occurs? Poppinga does not seem best suited to be a DB coach, but might make an awesome LB Coach. Maybe Howell gets moved to fill the DB slot? Would make sense.

I have to admit that I'm pretty worried about this. If you fire Hill, don't you have to bring in some one with experience? We now have two graduate assistants basically with major roles on our team. I think we needed to get someone with a proven track record, even if it meant waiting until the end of the season. Maybe having Bronco cover it is the right choice, but I worry about how much this stretches him.

This is one way for Bronco to say I have not given up on this team and I am willing to lead the way--I will work harder to improve the D--something I know a lot about....I hope the players rally around the coach who is willing to do this....

It gets them back on the field where they can try to score. BYU is ranked Dead last in all of college football for stopping the run. Since Bronco got here in 2003, they have never been this bad at stopping the run. If BYU's defense improves and starts getting other teams offenses off of the field, then the offense has more opportunities to score. If BYU's defense is able to keep the games close going into the 4th quarter, then BYU's offense has a chance to steal games in the 4th and gain some confidence. I know everyone thinks that Anae is the root of all of BYU's problems this year but I don't think he is. I have never thought he was an exceptional play caller but BYU's offense is struggling because they are very young and have a freshman QB. The offense is going to progress about as fast as Jake does but BYU has NO CHANCE to win giving up 4 scores in 5 first half possessions to utah state.

I can buy that. The defense could do a much better job of getting off the field (forcing turnovers, stops on 3rd down, etc.) than they have and allow the offense more opportunities to learn and gel.

I like the Kelly Poppinga hire. He switched from outside to inside backer for his sr year and we saw little to no drop off in performance with respect to Cameron Jensen. He is a smart/firey guy and I don't think that Bronco would have promoted him if he couldn't get the job done. My question is where he is going to coach and if they move someone to the db's or if Bronco coaches that position and has someone else take the nose tackles. Who is going to coach special teams now, he can't do both. I guess we will have to wait until tomorrow to find out.

It tells them that this coach is doing all that he can to address the matter. He knows D. He does not know O the same way. But if your coach took on more work and effort even if it is on the D side would that not motivate those on the O side?

He is Brady Poppinga's younger brother. he played on the 2006 and 2007 defenses. He was a back up outside linebacker on the 2006 team and took over for Cameron Jensen at MLB on the 2007 defense and didn't miss a beat. If you remember Brady, Kelly is of the same mold, he is kind of crazy and very intense. He must know the defense really well to change positions and play like he did so I think that is why he got promoted. It will be interesting to see where he will coach as far as positions.

He's probably going to do exactly what he's been doing all season as a graduate assistant. The move to assistant coach is just a nominal promotion--teams are only allowed to have so many coaches and so many graduate assistants at practices, games etc. By making Poppinga a 'coach' instead of a grad assistant, w take full advantage of those quotas after Hill's ouster without needing to go out and hire a new assistant coach from outside of the program in the middle of the session. The real question we should be asking is which grad assistant is going to start traveling with the team and roaming the sidelines now that Poppinga's promotion has opened up that spot.

So does this mean that there will be no new hirings because the staff is essentially full?
