Anyone think Rob Morris could handle the DC job?

All I know is... I loved watching him play defense for us. Did well in the NFL, released by the Colts in '08, and no longer in the NFL(I could be wrong).

He was a skeptic of Bronco's style of coaching, and admits he was wrong on that.

He's 35 -- very young for a coach BUT does he have the know-how to be a DC? Any experience other than playing?

There have been many good defensive players who have come out of BYU in the last 20 years, but you need more than just playing experience to take on a job as extensive as DC. Does Rob Morris have it? I have no idea, but I'd love to have a guy who learned from Tony Dungy take the reigns.

Suggesting that former players, with no previous coaching experience, should be considered as a candidate for coach baffles me. Rarely do you find an NFL player become a successful college coach. The drive just isn't there. The daily grind doesn't interest most successful players - they've been there done that. Steve Young would be a great quarterback coach, but do you really think he would give up NFL commentary and PR appearances to coach? Doman, on the other hand, has a bit of NFL experience but he was never successful and didn't make a bucket of cash in the NFL. He's young and trying to make a legitimate career as a coach. Rob Morris has made his cash. He is a great ambassador for the school, but he, and others like him will never make it as a long-term coach.

Is there any successful NFL player that has ever gone of to be a successful college coach?

Like I said, does he have the know how?

I don't know if he has any experience. Most likely, he's not right for the job.

Playing is one thing. Coaching is another.

If Rob has an interest in coaching, I have no problem with Bronco bringing him in as an assistant, but not as the DC.

Morris is out of the NFL and lived in Highland, UT .

I would worry about anyone with no coaching experience coming in as a coordinator. I don't think it works. Also, Morris is a little tweaked above the collar. Granted he's a linebacker, and so some of that is likely natural (though he was a RB when he came to BYU), but after some personal interactions, I wonder if he took one hit too many in his career. I don't see him as a teacher or leader. But that ring of his is "Super" nice!

If we're talking about revamping the coordinators, how 'bout Mike Leach as OC. He's available.

Would they bring back the train whistles if he was D-coordinator?

The three names that came to mind are probably all out of our price range.

DeWayne Walker- UCLA.

Rocky Long- New Mexico.

Brian Mitchell- Texas Tech.

Coach Walker is HC at NMSU and in year 2. Will not happen.

Brian Mitchell is still DB coach at TTech, but many thought coach Ill was a better DB coach..soo..no.

Rocky Long is the guy if we can make it happen. SDSU will no longer be in our league, so that issue goes away. With the extra $$ we make, we can bump his pay and make his asst coach. He will make out tteam play faster and more physical, which Bronco also wants. We need to make this hire happen.

IIRC Brian Mitchell is actually the DC at East Carolina University right now. I think that he has been there for a year or maybe two. I think that Greg Wrubell tweeted some stats about his defense over the weekend.

Rob Morris was released by the Colts only after he got injured. He was a starter for the Colts his final season but he had a career ending injury that essentially forced him to retire. His quad was separated from his knee if I recall correctly.

I love the idea of having Rob Morris on the staff. I don't think he should take over the entire defense but as a linebackers coach I think he would bring intensity and an excellent knowledge of the position. That guy was a master at filling gaps and stopping the run game. He is one of the best linebackers BYU has ever seen because of this.

Now as far as him being a good coach I have no idea. I don't think anybody else has any idea either. He could be great at it or he could suck at it. I have no idea.

Mitchell is at East Carolina I believe. Frankly, I'd like a coach who makes speed and aggression a primary on D. None of these 3 coaches add that. Rocky is the closest, but he hates BYU and would purposefully blow games just to be a D.

Really? Then don't take the job. No one with any pride does that. And Rocky hates BYU like every other coach in the MWC--because they play them and want to beat them.

I think the relationship coach Long and Bronco has could override that with the right price. Loyalty is coaching goes to who is paying your check. If Rocky as in the fold, it would only be about winning games.

The real key to the question of whether Rocky Long would work out at BYU is the same issue you bring up for why he wouldn't throw games--pride. Does Rocky Long have the humility to be managed by his former protege, Bronco?

He had the humility to go from being a head coach (of a pretty good program that he created) to a d coordinator in the same conference. I don't see any reason why he wouldn't work for Bronco. Rocky long would be a SWEET! dcoordinator but I don't see it happening. I don't see him leaving SDSU yet.

I have to believe Long is smarter and better than that. I would think its tougher going from head coach to anything less THAN working with someone you mentored. Cause if you mentored him... You trained him to your style AND he knows exactly what you are.

We see all the time players and coaches arriving at places they have hated.

Look at Utah's coaches staff. Half of them hated Utah at one point, when they played at BYU.

Peoples opinion changes all the time.

If you can't beat'em... Join'em.

My vote is for one of the coaches from TCU's D or Utah's D (Kalani?) coming over as the DC. What they have done on defense at both locations shows a great defensive mind and I'm sure every single D coach there has some very valuable knowledge that could be used to improve our D. (but I would hope they would stay away from the uranals and from outfitting dummies).

Long hired Bob Toledo as the offensive coordinator at UNM. Bob Toledo was the head coach at UCLA and Long was his DC. One thing about Long is that he is actually very humble. Bronco and Long are very similar.

Nothing I have ever seen from Rocky Long would indicate that he has so little character to do something like this. He is a stand up coach and person of integrity, which seems like it's becoming more and more rare in the sports world every day.
