Feel bad for Heaps

I'm loving this kid's attitude. He never gave up, never backed down. Even when the coaches took a field goal in the 3rd quarter and in reality we needed a TD to have any chance of getting back in the game. I really feel for this kid. He was slinging great passes all over the field tonight and perfect passes were being dropped left and right. I could see the pain in his eyes...he knew he was making the throws and yet they weren't being caught...had to be massively frustrating.

I'm not saying he's amazing yet, and I'm very upset Riley went down as I feel having Riley in there was the right move. But I do appreciate that this kid competes until the clock is at 0:00 regardless---he's a fighter and I respect that. He just kept throwing and throwing hoping for magic. It didn't come but he just kept going. Put it in the bank and chalk up the experience.

We don't have a great quarterback but at least he's got heart. And frankly, quarterback is the least of our issues.

I really like the kid too, he has a real fighter mentality. Now he just has some major issues to work on.



1. Footwork is still sloppy

2. Retreats too much in the pocket. Step up and take a hit like a man if it means you'll get your pass off.

3. Locks on to receivers, his primary receiver is watched from before the snap and his eyes never come off of him. If the guy is open or not, the pass is going there.

4. Over throws wide open guys. He seems to be able to fit passes into tight spaces when guys are covered, but give him a wide open target and it's a guaranteed 10 yards over thrown.



Now, credit for things he has improved on.



Much better touch passes to running backs in the flat. He's starting to realize that when a guy is 5 yards away and wide open you don't need to throw 107mph fast ball. He also improved significantly in the pocket from the FSU game.

He still seems to take an extra two to three counts in the pocket when his downfield guys aren't open. I guess I'd like to see him make a quicker decision, dump it the the RB who never seems to release anymore, or run the ball forward and slide.

Both good things. He'll be good. I have to remember to be patient with him. Although I'm still hoping that Nelson's surgically reconstructed non-throwing shoulder will allow him to beat Heaps outright and let Heaps redshirt next year. (T.I.C.)

unlike the Nevada game, where Heaps was missing wide open receivers, we saw some great passes that were just being flat out dropped in the Utah State game. Even the announcers were all over it, and commented on how our receivers have GOT to help out Heaps by catching the ball.

I feel bad for Heaps because he has no receivers who can catch a pass. Do you mean to tell me he had receivers in high school, for 4 years, that were better than what BYU has? Receivers were supposed to be our strength this year. Jacobson has quit, I think; Chambers...not sure, he never had great hands, now he is suspended for a couple of games, tight ends catch about one pass per game. when JJ is our leading receiver, you know something is wrong.



But they day will come when Heaps is the junior or senior and will destroy teams with his arm--but probably not this year.

I don't see how jake's high school receivers (who played against high school defenses) relates to any of this.

I feel bad for Heaps as well. I mean yes he does have some miscues but that is to be expected from a kid who has played less then 5 collegiate games. But when he is on target his receiver HAVE to catch them. That TD pass to Mendenhall was way overthrown and was obviously his fault. That TD pass to Diluigi was incredible and JJ just flat out dropped it.



I like his tenacity and fire though. He is pushing through it and is improving.

Receivers need to pull the ball in, but Heaps has got to throw to the right team as well.

But I like his fire. I agree with the commentators(who otherwise sucked), this kid is going to be good.

Heaps can actually throw a football. Nelson can not. That's why Heaps was the #1 qb recruit in the country, and why Nelson transferred from USU to BYU so that he could sit on the bench. It's time for you to accept that and move on.

Probably all the players do not want to score TDs. If you r Nelson and doing the scoring, the fans clamor for more of Heaps who still struggles to score. If you are Kariya, who scored tonight or DiLuigi- fans clamor for more Juice. On D, fans clamor for more Van Noy. Now we have tried more of these and other TALENTED new guys - no difference - less points.

As it stands Heaps had a completion percentage of 49% tonight.



I've heard there were 8 drops and I've heard there were 10 drops so I'll go with 9 drops.



If you calculate the drops as completions then his completion percentage goes up to 65%

But Heaps didn't throw for 400 yards and five touchdowns in his second career start of college football, so he was obviously an over-hyped recruit who shouldn't be playing.

Where is this talk about Nelson coming from? Stop comparing Heaps to anyone else and just take him for what he is: a true freshman who needs a LOT of work. While we're at it, let's throw the whole team in there as well, I can't think of one unit that should be happy with their performance after this loss. EVERYONE ON THIS TEAM NEEDS WORK, INCLUDING AND ESPECIALLY OUR QB BECAUSE HE TOUCHES THE BALL ON EVERY PLAY.

Heaps obviously can throw a ball a long ways and get it in the vicinity of where it needs to be. But most of those drops were described as tough but catchable balls. When touch and placement improves they will either be caught or be described simply as catchable balls.



Refs are allowing a lot of contact on our receivers too. Jacobsen had a defenders arm contacting him front and back on that long ball he dropped and it was not called.



I agree our receivers need to fight harder to catch . But as Lyons said last night back in the day he knew he could just get it in the vicinity of Odle and he would go get it but with backs and other receivers he learned what positioning of the ball and touch was most likely to be caught with each receiver. That is what will eventually come with experience.

I don't like the way they are throwing him to the wolves.



I understand BYU has gotten behind in games and therefore must throw more.



And the coaches have now made their bed by not given Lark or Munns consideration in fall camp but this baptism by fire could end up hurting Heaps. I agree he appears to be keeping his chin up but standing back there chucking the ball 50 times a game with little to no success has got to take its toll at some point doesn't it?



He sure doesn't look like he's having fun.
