National Audience, Drew Phillips, & Home Sellouts

1. We have the only college football game Friday night. ESPN. The nation will be watching. I want to see total domination! I want to win by at least 25. No letting off in the 4th quarter. USU fans won't get the chance to repeat their stupid chant.



2. In the Texas A&M v Oklahoma St. game tonight, Jerrod Johnson (A&M) had a TD pass to Ryan Swope that made me think that we could use Drew Phillips like that. Swope was a high school RB with 4.4 speed, but A&M is using him as a WR. He had one-on-one coverage, caught a short pass, made his defender miss, and booked it 20+ yards to the endzone. It won't be this year, but I can see Phillips being used this way.



3. Another item of bad news from last week is that we did not sell out, which means that our streak ends at 19 games. So much for getting an expansion to LES. Let's see how many true fans stick out the entire season...

One of the fundamental tenets of the West Coast Offense that BYU used to run was to throw to the running backs often. That's why the primary formation was split backs pro set--it allowed the running backs clean releases into the their patterns. And the running backs were required to be precise route runners.



You'll recall that one of the reasons the 1994 49ers offense was dominant was because Ricky Watters was so involved. Ty Detmer's favorite target was RB Matt Bellini.



There are three plays I'd like to see BYU implement more often--the swing pass to a fast HB, a circle route to either running back, and a standard HB screen pass.

I hate it when we try the wide receiver screen. Our receivers never block good enough for that play to work. I only remember one significant game where our receiver made it to the next level and had a significant gain, unfortunately it was O'Neill Chambers against Oklahoma last year and he coughed up the ball inside the blue-zone.

Not only that, but WR screens aren't necessarily designed to keep hard rushing linemen and linebackers honest, while a HB screen generally is. I think the problem is that BYU doesn't have linemen mobile enough to properly execute HB screen. I'd love to be proven wrong.

You know, I totally agree. The last time I saw us really run that wide out screen was in 2001 in Crowton's first year with Reno Mahe. You know, I know Crowton made a lot of you want to leave the church and everything, but I missed the bad years on my mission. 2001 was nearly a dream year. We ended up with the #1 offense in the NCAA that year. Averaged like 50 pts a game. It was unreal how often we were in the endzone. Doman, Staley, Mahe. Remember Mahe playing that year against Utah right after he had stomach surgery? Stitches opened up and his stomach was bleeding half the game. Without Reno that magical offense just doesn't happen. Ahhh, I often fantasize about what we could have done that year had our defense just been as good as say...Timp View High School. That was what kept us out of the big bowls that year. Didn't matter that we averaged 50 pts a game. When our defense gave up a whopping 35 per game nobody gives you respect. We were already told we wouldn't be in a BCS game that year two days before we got stomped in Hawaii after Staley broke his leg at Virginia. Wow. What a year. Oh well. Soon. Soon.

BTW, did anyone else notice that when they did the replay of the INT that they had about a gazillion angles to look at? I was expecting a nose cam view or something. But in the play on Sat when Bradley came away with the ball there were what two angles? So our one tv cam and two sony handicams from the MTN get the moniker Stupidly pathetic too!

I was a teenager during the Detmer years, and not really knowing to much about football, that I was surprised that as I watched the Miami game on replay as an adult, to find out that Bellini wasn't a WR.

You'd think with the amount of NFL talent on that defense, they'd have played a lot better--Brett Keisel, Ryan and John Denney, Brady Poppinga, Colby Bockwoldt, Justin Ena, C.J. Ah You. Granted, some of these guys were underclassmen, but still...

It will be a sad night if the nation watches this game. If I wasn't a BYU fan, I'd probably watch Smallville and Supernatural instead of the game. Two 1-3 teams from the same state have little compelling national interest.



As a BYU fan, on the other hand, I will be watching because I want to see what happens in the soap opera known as the 2010 BYU Cougar Football Team. :crazy:

It will be a sad night if the nation watches this game. If I wasn't a BYU fan, I'd probably watch Smallville and Supernatural instead of the game. Two 1-3 teams from the same state have little compelling national interest.

The fact that millions of people watch average bowl games because it's the only football game on is proof that people will at least tune in to see if it's an interesting game. From Stewart Mandel's Bowls, Polls & Tattered Souls:

Even a seemingly dreadful New Mexico Bowl matchup between the hometown Lobos and San Jose State two days later garnered a 1.8 rating (3 million viewers). That 3 million people tuned into a New Mexico-San Jose State game is perhaps the ultimate proof that Americans are obessed with all things football. Either that or they're really, really bored."



Americans will be watching.
