Bronco is Tired?

Reading this from Jay Drew's blog really made me feel a surge of empathy for our head coach. I have been fairly blunt about my misgivings...but I have never questioned his ability or the effort he invests.

I hope this season and the scrutiny associated therewith do not take its toll. He is a good man and a great coach.

It almost feels like we need to win on Friday for Bronco.

Go Cougars.

BYU by 21.

Personally, I want to hear that he is tired and his staff is as well. Considering that football is #5 on the list--I am glad. It means they are putting extra time in to get things cleared up and the team ready to play. Dude gets paid a fortune for that to happen. I am not calling for sleeping in teh office, but bankers hours aren't enough, either.

Well, I suppose there are two types of fatigue worthy of consideration here:

(1) The fatigue that comes with continuous labor (referenced above)

(2) An emotional fatigue or drain of personal resource.

I would be more concerned about the latter than the former. I don't know if money really compensates for the drawbacks of intense visibility and public scrutiny.

A win would certainly help his cause.

So while this is not a must win for the program, but it kind of feels like a critical win for Bronco on a personal level when I read this kind of stuff.

I, frankly, am getting a little tired of the snide remarks that I read on this website about football beeing "5th" on Bronco's priority list and it should be higher. All you that think that football should be #1 on his priority list need to ask yourselves; where is your job on your priority list? Frankly, work for me falls below my faith and family every time which puts it at 3. Bronco mentioned that he wants his players priorities listed after faith, family and school so that puts it at #4. This is right in line of where I have heard general authorities saying that we should have our priorities. My job NEVER comes before my family and I am glad that Bronco has his priorities straight as far as what he says in the media.

Totally agree. On a side note, I have had some sleepless nights and fatigue while coaching bad seasons of high school sports, so I can see why Bronco might be tired.

I for one absolutely love that football is 5th, and if it ever becomes 1st then BYU is just any other football program.

Beat me too it. I would add that just because it is #4 doesn't mean he still can't be one of the best coaches in the NCAA. I have been very successful and have done things that most others in my company and generally in my field would not have been able to do as quickly or as completely and my career is down there under family and faith (which entails a lot more "other" priorities).

To me it just means he has to find unique ways and use his own special talents to make it happen.

I really believe we are going to thump USU this weekend.

GO COUGARS!!!

I wouldn't call it a snide remark at all. Just a comment. And show me where anyone on this board has said football should come #1. I sure have not seen it. Typical overreaction to a comment.

It is just that at times, it seems as if it isn't even a remote #5. Short practices, yet demanding execution is troubling. That block of time in the day should be football #1 is all, just as your time at work should be work #1 for that time. When you are at church, it should be #1 for that time. etc. Having players going into bowls games ASKING for longer practices and not getting them is curious as well(yes this has happened). Is it because football was #5?

Well said and I agree. I would bet that most coaches would say publically the same thing as Bronco, that football is not the #1 priority of their life nor should it be. What they actually believe and how they live their lives is another matter. This is BYU, sports will always take a back seat to the main priorities of God, family, friends, and schooling.

Bronco, and many players have backed him on this, puts in 100% effort as a coach in getting his team ready. He makes mistakes at times, which he's readily admitted, but he does try to maximize effect in getting the team ready.

People complain about the not using the full 2 hours of practice each day. He is the coach. He has assistants watching what is going on. And they have enough experience to determine when the goals for that practice have been met. He's also stated that his practices run at a much higher level of intensity than what other teams do, meaning they get more done in less time. He has modeled his practice schedule one what several of the top NFL teams do. It has been very successful in generating winning seasons the last four seasons. There are times I wish he would use more time in actual practice, but at what point is there dimishing returns on time spent drilling over things they have shown they have mastered already???

Hopefully, USU is the cure what alles this team and they come out firing on all cylinders. But to complain that a Church school puts football as the 5th priority in life is laughable.

And yet we have had 4 10+ win seasons in a row with football being "#5". I think things are fine. Players don't structure practices, coaches do and it seems to be working pretty good until this year, and frankly, this year is not over. I think Bronco knows what he is doing or our football team would not have had the success that it has had over the last few years.

If vocal fans donated enough money - ie put your money where your mouth is - you could try to get June Jones away from SMU where he makes more than double what Bronco makes. Or you could get MCMackin from UH for 1.5 more than Bronco makes. Or maybe Sark from UW who makes more than Bronco makes even though he just brought his experienced team with senior heisman 1st overall NFL pick Jake Locker, 1,000+ yard rusher Chris Polk, and all everything wideout Jermaine Kearze or whatever his name was, and lost to the lazy idiot Mendenhall with his stupid rotating QB system led by a starter, that can't make all the throws, isn,t a D1 QB or a BYU mold QB, and played with an undisclosed shoulder injury.

There are other candidates. Maybe Leach has lowered his price, pride, and expectations. Maybe kwhitt will take a pay cut and take the job he recently spurned. Maybe we get Crowton. Back. Chow now makes less than he used to and only a little more than Bronco. Detmer now has HC experience in high school. McMahon is maybe ready to kiss and make up with BYU. Maybe Steve Young is getting tired of making more money making commercials.

So u guys that keep whining about how much Bronco gets paid - who u gonna pony up some big bucks to get to replace him. Who is on your A list? I know I forgot Andy Reid who has turned it down before and probably someone else. Holmoe has HC experience. Maybe it is finally time to give Reynolds a shot - but isn't he out of kids we want to recruit. And maybe Bosco to replace Anae for a couple of years and then let him replace Bronco. Maybe the DC who was at UCLA with the dream team and sent to NM State or someplace awful like that. Make your list. I know every great coach out there covets this job.

Another typical overreaction. And many people who failed to address the exact points brought up in my comment.

As I recall, I started the "In Bronco I Trust" thread. I think he is doing a great job, but doesn't mean the man is perfect. Does not mean anyone is calling for his replacement, either. Funny how a comment about practice and priorities leads to people immediately getting so defensive they take it to a ridiculous extreme with suggestions of looking for replacements, etc. So try to stay on point and discuss the actually issues brought up-- 1)practice time and 2)how program priorities might be a reason for shorter amounts of it, and 3)if it might have a negative impact on a young, inexperienced team.

We can all agree that BYU currently has some issues that are under the microscope-rightfully so--and perhaps some of them are there as a result of issues with practice, or lack thereof with a young team in need of more training. Not one person has addressed how actually practicing longer to work on execution would be a bad thing for this program right now, even with players calling for it in the past. Players are part of the program as well and had a feel for what they might need. Since when is it bad for a group to ask coaches for more training to improve themselves?

The question I think is, does BYU need to practice more?

The obvious answer, I think, is yes.

I don't think that practice time or lack thereof this year is contributing to the players not making plays. Players can practice as long as they want. I am sure that if a reciever asked his position coach to stay after and help him work on some fundamentals the coach would do it. I heard Chad Lewis talk about coach Reynolds helping him with his fundamentals for blocking in Coach Reynolds own house so I don't see any of the coaches turning down kids who want more time with them. Bronco designs his practices after what he read that John wooden did at his practices. They have a set schedule and everything they do is designed to meet objectives. When those objectives are met, they end practice. It has worked for 10+ wins per year over the last 4 years in a row. This current team is very young but very talented, it is going to come around, us fans need to learn some patience and give it a bit of time. I don't expect this year to be as good as I originally thought (8 or more wins) which is disapointing but I do expect them to get better every game. Next year will be the year that we should all start panicing if they are still playing poorly.
L
Lawboy
That was my point. This young team could benefit from longer practices, but program priorities might be what is preventing it. Longer practices means more practice tape to review. More practice tape to review means coaches taking more time to then practice plan and critique what they saw on the tape, which means more time then dealing with personnel issues, which means longer days--which goes against a program priority. Just saying it might actually have an impact.
B
Brayden Green
They already do that (stay after and practice more). When you have a young talented team, it just goes without saying that you practice with them more, not only to get them ready for this year, but the next few as well.

We aren't playing the usual patsies anymore, and teams are finding ways to beat us. So I think that we need to make a few changes. Especially if we want to be at the top instead of in the middle.

This post should have read "Bronco is tired or are we just Tired of Bronco"

I for one am not tired of Bronco. His fatigue has to be the result of hard work and pressure, he has a tough job under great scrutiny and is underpaid - comparitively speaking.

Personally, I think Bronco is tired, and not in the I-didn't-get-enough-sleep-last-night kind of way. I don't think Bronco will be the coach at BYU in 2010. Just a feeling I get.
