Confident or Concerned

I see different levels of confidence or lack there of when it comes to the Utah state game. I want to know reasons why people feel the way they do - in relation to the game ahead.



I think we play a great game in Logan and come a way with a win by a comfortable margin. I think the softer D coupled with the fact that the offense (as we will probably see it this season) had a full game to play. I think our defense gets enough stops that we actually win the time of possesion battle which has hurt us probably more than anything else in our losses.



As an intangible, I think the D plays inspired with the loss of Fuga and the team as a whole has a break-out game because in their minds there is no way BYU football takes a 4 game slide.

Confident.



I agree. The defense, looked better than they did at FSU. They will improve over the next couple days. The offense is on the brink of having a breakout game. It COULD have happened against NEvada if they were able to find the endzone more consistantly.



Basically this team is close to becoming much better than what we've seen. BYU has a lot of developing talent and it's only a matter of when, not if, that it all comes together for them. What better time than vs USU.

Concerned, but confident. BYU comes out on top, but there will be a couple of those "what were you thinking" moments.

BYU squeaks out a win. This team has not proven to have an offense yet so I don't see how people think we'll blow them away, especially on the road. Don't forget how sorry we looked on the road against AFA and FSU--both better teams than USU yes, but these boys haven't proven anything away from home yet. I say 24-21. Besides it doesn't matter how good our O is if the D can't get stops. Is there any hope we hold USU under 400 yards? I hope so, but if not, then we might get smashed.

We don't need confidence or really even any skill to beat USU so I'm not concerned this week. The running game will explode and Heaps will finally take advantage of wide open receivers down field for some huge numbers.



But, I am very concerned about the team in general. I feel like the team has no direction right now -- kind of like some poor dude getting worked over in a UFC fight. The fight is still going on but he's taken one too many elbows to the brain and his eyes are glazed over and even if his opponent just stands there he won't even be able to gather his wits for long enough to strike. It's only a matter of time before he gets punched in the throat.

This kind of comparison is bogus...so logically usu scores 56 against us? I'm not buying into that at all. No one has scored 30 against us and usu is not better than any team we have played so far. I think giving usu 21 is generous. I'll give them 17 . . . I think our offense breaks out this game and scores 30+!

I did see improvement last week that failed to impact scoreboard, and was partly due to a weaker defense to beat, but gives a glimmer of HOPE. Since Another poster spells HOPE HEAPS let's start there. He still does not get it in the end zone or make something out of nothing as well as Nelson did - but he did not make big mistakes and especially he did not get stripped of the ball under pressure like FSU game several times. He generally finds the open receiver and as he settles down - may start making the throws like he does in practice. Further, USU is beaten down and battered with injuries compared to game vs Oklahoma. They will be playing a lot of frosh.



Heaps 250+ yards, 100+ yards rushing, 26+ points.



D will get more rest and be less outmatched on speed. USU QB is getting flustered. USU under 21 points. BYU covers 5 point spread.



Fans quit whining about losing and resume whining about not winning big enough

How are actual on-the-field performances bogus? They're completely valid, and if nothing else interesting. Besides which, I didn't say USU will score 45 on us did I? My call is far different from what the comparisons might suggest. That doesn't mean we should completely ignore the stats.



And Air Force and Florida State both scored 30+ on us, while BYU hasn't scored more than 23 points yet. I think we're due though, though I doubt we score nearly as many points as SDSU did.

At no time in recent history has our back been against the wall so much (as far as the potential of losing 4 consecutive games and being on the verge of a no bowl season) which is why I think the softer competition will allow us to have a break out game offensively. USU has shown they can score on a quality defense, they will score but I think our offense dominates the game and allows them few chances to be on the field to score.

We were 1-3 in Bronco's first year, and up against this exact same predicament. Especially after the Crowton years. The team pulled it together then for 6-6, but I think this group can get to 7-5, and 8-4 if we somehow find a way to stop the U. But right now, we are what our records says--not real great. Get it to 3-3, then let's reevaluate.

All true, but in the Bronco era, we were never facing the possibility of three in a row let alone the four in a row we are facing now.

Mars - the first problem is that my bad eyesight, use of tiny iPhone screen, and the way the system lists the last poster in an area where I am used to seeing originator posted resulted in mr mistakenly thinking you came up with the Spelling Hope Heaps thread. My bad - although I do think you share my measured optimism for a BYU win over USU. You posted 24-21 iirc and I think I posted 26-20 somewhere.



My apologies to you and to whomever created Spelling Hope Heaps for crediting the wrong person. But Heaps does spell hope, finally, Vs USU. I reserve judgment on the rest of the season.





The topic of the thread, iirc, is whether we are confident or concerned. What the Heaps Hope comment has to do with that is that I saw enough improvement in Heaps Saturday that it gives me hope for a win Friday - in fact I predicted one. So that, with USU being weakened by injury as much or probably more than we are, solidifies that hope. To spell it out - I am still a little bit concerned but have more hope, optimism, but fall short of being totally confident that we beat USU with a big, but far short of perfect, passing performance by Heaps augmented by solid running from JJ and Juice.



Anyway that is the linkage to the original topic and gives you proper credit for labeling Heaps as Hope. I happen to agree that there is Heaps Hope this Friday. I reserve judgment re SDSU until we beat USU and I can spend time scouting SDSU after their bye week.



I.e. I am much more concerned about SDSU even in Provo.

I don't put any loss thus far on our defense. Some have blasted them for the Air Force game, but I see all our losses differently--despite the numbers, our defense has been what has kept us in the games and given our offense opportunities time and time again. The numbers don't tell the story as much as the momentum of the game. Our defense has done their job, in my book.

So, can our offense show us something this week that they have not shown yet this season? I think so:

- They've had a full game of experience together; some of our younger players had flashes of excellence in the Nevada game;

- I think Heaps' growth curve will be exponential, as opposed to linear. He will get better, and do so quickly. I expect at least two long completions over the top this game;

- I can't stand Anderson (can't that be a reason?);

- Their fan t-shirts are classless; and JJ and Juice will help them understand that we don't need Harvey to beat them;

- Our special teams will make a difference. We will execute better in this area, and that will make the difference of at least 14 points.



I say we win convincingly. I don't buy the "we just aren't that good this year" crap that's been spewed by some. All three losses have been winnable. We haven't played well, but we are improving and the season is more than a tale of 4 first games. I don't see any reason we can't win the rest of our games, starting this Friday night. TCU has shown they aren't as powerful as expected, and we'll be much better by the game versus Utah. Why the heck can't we win the rest? I will believe this every day, every quarter of every game, and every Monday morning regardless what happened over the previous weekend. That's just the way I like to be a fan.

And I'm more confident against USU than the first four games we've played this year, but also concerned that we could lose this winnable game, since it's on the road still relatively early in the season to a good offense who is very motivated to beat their main rival.

Yes - with my old age, bad eyes, and tiny iPhone while traveling most of the last month and the way the system shows the most recent poster, I thought MARS was the originator of the original thread that spells HOPE HEAPS. So I stand corrected and should have given credit to the author of that thread. I tend to read a lot of comments right after MARS because I post at night and am usually 4 hours time zone delay VS mountain Zone posters. So I may have made similar miscues when viewing a thread MARS commented on.



In any event, Heaps improved enough Vs Nevada to give me hope for a win over an injury riddled Aggie team on the road. This will be the first week I have expected BYU to win.
