LawboyI think we need to face some obvious truths about this team, and then give the coaches some slack for it. 2010 BYU football bears the fruits of the Crowton era. Normally it would not take that long for this to materialize, but this is BYU--where missions and redshirts or lost seasons due to mission recovery occur. We are finally seeing the fruits of the early years of Bronco's recruiting character first guys in order to establish his program. The 2005 recruiting class was Bronco's first, so let's go back and review it, along with the 2004 Crowton class.

Problem was many got booted before that year even began due to a party incident, or shortly thereafter. This year left a HUGE hole in the future recruiting years. It also showed Bronco that he needed to put a culture in place and go for guys that will actually make it at BYU. Which brings us to the 2005 class.

First off, not 1 QB in this whole class. That hurt us. Also, many of these guys are gone now or did not make it for 4 full years, which hurts our depth again. When you combine the 2004 and 2005 classes with 5 guys now contributing, this is a thin Sr class. You can clearly see why this version of the BYU Cougars is lacking in senior leadership, depth and experience. Too much of it never made it past the first year at BYU, or even to day 1 on campus. But there is hope--the 2006 class and beyond.

Even with this 2006 class, some attrition from injury, academics, etc. But 2007 builds nicely upon this one. A QB in this class as well (Munns) I think what we are seeing this year is that 2 year window where our depth took a huge hit, and we had no QBs in those classes back from missions and ready to go for 2010. I think it also explains why we added a QB to the 2011 class--just in case. Too many freshman are having to play this year that are not quite ready, and we can blame it on the 2 year window of 2004/2005. We lack depth in the upperclassmen, and it is easy to see why.
