Anae Must Go

The play calling was horrific on Saturday but I see a pattern over the years and I am still ticked at Anae for the following two reasons:

1. 2007 bowl game against UCLA. We have the ball on about the 15 with 30 seconds or so. We have momentum. I am screaming at the TV for Anae to take a knee. Instead we run the ball, fumble, UCLA recovers, and scores a couple of plays later. Momentum completely changes.

2. 2008 against Utah where we stop running the ball when Harvey was avg 7 yards per carry. Inexcusable.

I haven't seen anything after Saturday that tells me he has gotten any better. He must go.

I won't go that far but I feel your pain. My favorite play call was I think it may have been a csu game a year or two ago, can't remember, but it was 4th and 17 i believe and they did a run play to unga. Unga was hit within 5-10 yards and carried about 11 guys on his back and got 18 yards. That was my favorite play call by anae.

anae had some good play calling. we drove the ball up the field quite well last saturday. the play calling gets bad though in key situations. I think sometimes he just over thinks it.

I am not ready to call for his head yet but i sure felt like it when i say the 4th and 4 with kariya running the ball call. the luigi up the middle on third and long as also excellent. I have cooled off since.

I knew this thread would be here. I think we all can admit that the play calling was poor in the blue zone, very poor. And we threw about 6 too many fades. However, I still trust the coaching staff and Anae, other than those things I mentioned, I really really liked the rest of the play calling.

I am on the fence here, to be honest. I think we run the ball better now than any BYU teams of the past, and that is great. But I also think we underutilize our WRs and have TERRIBLE patterns for them in this offense. BYU used to feast on crossing patterns over the middle, and we never use that in this offense. I mean ever. I look at how Indy uses Collie now, and BYU basically used him as an outside threat that ran the same crappy patterns Ashworth, Hoffman, Jacobsen and co use, and now the kid catches the ball all over for Indy. We need better variety of routes for our receivers, and they need to attack the intermediate middle routes way more than we do now.

Didn't Collie catch the ball about 120 times for about 1300 yards running those same terrible patterns in 2008? I don't think that Robert Anae is the best Ocoordinator in the country but he is doing a fine job. A lot of times plays look bad because they fail miserably due to poor execution or something. Also the playbook is much more simple right now because we have a freshman for a QB. No one was complaining about Robert anae Last year when max hall was executing the same plays that are currently not being executed. Lets give this offense some time, it will develop and all you guys calling for Anae's head right now will be singing his praises when the same plays that are currently not working start working as they get executed better.

Anae wants us to be Georgia Tech. Maybe he wants to go there, after their coach gets fired, yet again.

Yeah, who cares that BYU has experienced the most wins than in any other 5 year period of BYU football history.

Or perhaps it was because Collie was just so good, and not necessarily the offense. Same with Pitta? Great players make plays, regardless of how crap the calling is. We have some of the best players we have ever had. I understand many are raw right now, but come on, our offense is still underachieving an we all know it.

Anae gets credit for a lot of max's audibles, and max running the hurryup offense.

True. But Good recruiting, weak schedules, and Bronco probably influence that WAY more. I'm with lawboy on needing crossing routes and mid-intermediate routes.

So Max hall was the real Ocoordinator last year? That makes total sense. I see the light now.

It may come as a suprise to you but Bronco has done very little with the offense other then make a suggestion or 2 over the years. He has turned this thing completely over to Robert Anae. Having said that, he always takes the blame when things don't go good. Just like he has with the 2 qb system.

I'm not saying your wrong, but all of those audibles are also Anae plays too.

And are we sure that the fade route was what was called every time Heaps threw it? Or has he just fallen in love with it and never looks for anything else?

Besides, there were several deep routes that were wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide open during the Nevada game, they were just over thrown by about 10 yards every single time.

Anae lacks humility to change things that aren't working, he lacks creativity necessary to keep up with defenses and players individual strengths, and he lacks vision required by an OC (The Booth).

I don't know if there is anyone with experience that would be better, so what can we do? We have these excellent coordinators but something needs to change.

agreed. agreed. agreed.

I don't think Heaps is in love with the fade. Heaps isn't doing anything to audible out of the called plays. The problem isn't anae's plays... it is his selection of the plays, and personnel in the plays being called.

I too get frustrated when our vanilla offense doesn't execute. This does not mean you dump your system and its coordinator after three losses.

I trust that these coaches are better at football than we give them credit for.

the offense is going to stay vanilla for a while too. You just can't expect a true freshman QB to be given the entire offense after a start or two. They tried to keep the playbook intact by running 2 qb's that failed and one of the qb's got hurt so now we are stuck with trying to ease a guy into the offense playing against Gary Anderson and Rocky Long defenses that gave guys like Max hall fits. I hate to be a rainy cloude but I am looking at reality right now.

I am not saying fire anyone. Just on the fence with the play calling. I do not think it is maximizing our talent this year. And the QB coaching needs to get Heaps to simply worry about moving the chains right now, not hitting home runs. So the play calling needs to back up that philosophy of moving the chains. If we want to attack, do it with intermediate routes, not deep fades. I mean, the deep fade is the toughest ball for a QB to throw. It rarely gets picked which is nice, but does not get caught much either. Drag patterns, WR crosses, skinny posts, flag patterns, now those have a higher success rate, especially if run quickly.

Ithink Jake and his receiving core need to go watch Peyton Manning play. Dude had the ball out so fast yesterday it was amazing, and most passes were thrown to guys within 5 yards of the line, but in a position where they could catch and run. Not hook patters, or sits. I understand those are needed at times, but not as the foundation. Hit the uncovered guy fast and let him run. By the way, that is typically our slot guy...who is a ghost right now in this offense.

I'm sorry, they tried to keep the playbook INTACT by running two qb's? Did a Riley set look like BYU foortball to you? More like INVENT a new playbook, which is what they did. They spent a precious amount of prep time looking for ways to keep Riley on the field, and now we are seeing the drawbacks of that. It was bar none the stupidest idea ever to change our offense from one that has been tops in the nation for the last 10 years. If the qb doesn't fit your offense - you don't change the offense and past years recruiting efforts - changing the playbook. You find a qb that works. Especially if you have one in the stable that just needs to be groomed. Heaps is missing right now, but he is a prototypical BYU quarterback, and we obviously see that he should have gotten more reps. Especially if Riley had a shoulder injury the whole time...
