Hurry up and wait offense

Maybe it was a combination of young players and interesting officials, but I got the feeling many times that the team tried to hurry up on offense but just. couldn't. quite. do. it.



Most agonizing for me was the play after the turnover. Seemed like we would want to get the play off before someone decided to review their fumble, but the team just stood there for a long time, till the officials finally blew the whistle and announced the review. Should they have been hurrying up so there would be a less of a chance for a review?



And the officials--it seemed to me there were a few times where they stood over the football until Nevada was set, then backed up to allow the play to start--once they even blew a play dead because the ball had been hiked while the official was standing over it. Was I missing something?

It reminded me of the bowl game against Cal. There were several times where Nevada wasn't set and it seemed like we were waiting so they could get set, before running the play. It just seemed like we could have taken advantage of this with some quicker snaps. I understand the need to read the defense, but if they're not set, doesn't that also imply they're not ready and therefore might be susceptible to any play? Someone with more football knowledge than me might be able to explain why you don't run the play before the defense is ready.

We do run the occasional quick play while the D is still setting up, usually quick screens to OC or, in the past, to Pitta. But, that's just not how our offense works. And that's by design.

Or the time when their D-end practically ran all the way to Heaps and we stood there like feet in cement? I'm sure they have been coached that way, but good gravy. I think the team will speed up as more reps and rhythm increase.
