taekwondaveNow, I don't know what to say about our defense, I really don't. They have been thoroughly smacked around for four straight weeks now. But if our offense were a few weeks better (does that even make sense? Allow me to explain) I think our record looks very different.
And our offense WOULD be a few weeks better had Bronco refused (as he should have) to have gone along with this whole "quarterback controversy" and try to cover indecisiveness with a quirky offensive scheme that you wouldn't even attempt in a high school game. Everyone knows two quarterbacks don't work.
Had he grown a pair when he should have and made a decision regarding the starting quarterback, no matter WHO they picked, whether Nelson or Heaps or even Lark or Munns or Bronco's MOM, I don't care, we would be a better team today, because the offense (our very, very young offense) would have had ample time to gel and get into a rhythm.
Now, having said that, I think this year will surprise us still. I mean, at this point ANY win will probably surprise us, but I'm seriously thinking this team can learn a lot and grow a lot and gel in it's respective offensive and defensive units.
We're missing defensive assignments. I think we can blame our youth for that. We all know we've got speed, size and strength there so that's not the problem. I think youth is. And that's fine. Give it time and our defense can only get better. And that's good because we still have to play TCU and Utah later.
As for our offense? I think we have a breakout game next week. I really do. This was Jake's first week ever with this team taking all the reps in practice and I think he proved he's got some ability in this game. I think offensively we looked much more....how do I put it....full of potential (remember that drive that ended with a field goal with eight minutes left? That drive was FANTASTIC!) and next week may be our chance to really hand it to an opponent offensively. I wouldn't be surprised if we put up over forty next game. Which when you consider we've averaged like 14 a game so far, that would be a huge step. But I think it's possible.
Yeah, I really don't feel like we've hit the ceiling yet this season. Let's keep our heads up. We may get some pleasant surprises yet. And it may give us a LOT of hope going into next season.
