Peeved at the Coaches

Our boys played hard today. Very upset with the coaches for the following reasons:

-You give the ball to Kariya ON A SWEEP on 4th and 4---are you kidding me! Critical situation---put the ball in the hands of our playmakers!

-Down 17 points, you kick a field goal instead of going for it on 4th and 3 on a drive when Nevada couldn't stop us to save their lives! Talk about killing the confidence of your young team. Why don't you just roll over and concede the victory. I can't support coaches that give up on their players and don't give them a chance to win the game when they are finally in a groove.

-Stupid kicking game mistakes as outlined by others

-3rd and 7 and Anae calls an up the gut run play??? DUMBEST THING EVER! This was just unbelievable. Once again, on a drive when they couldn't stop the pass, we run it right up the gut on 3rd and 7. Anae called a GREAT first quarter and then just became an idiot. I've had enough of Anae's idiotic playcalling and Bronco's rolling over with the field goal when we could've put ourselves in a position to win the game. Our coaches are MORONS for doing several things this game to undermine the confidence of our young players. End of story.

Agree 110% with each point. I was also really disappointed with the D-line's inability to plug the running lanes.

I thought the offense showed improvement by the end of the game, but I worry about playing Utah St in Logan. Like blood in shark waters.

Hawkwing made that point that at that point BYU took the 3 cause they were down 3 scores anyway. Get one of the scores out of the way and hope for a pick six or something. Plenty of time at that point to stop Nevada 2X and get back in the game. Even had we scored a TD there, we need 2 stops and 2 scores. Basically a push at that point, but I think they did the right thing. I don't agree that the coaches gave up on anyone, or ever will for that matter.

Down that many points every call is going to be critiqued. Can't please everyone.

You people are nuts. During the week all the wanna be fans talk about executing--the stupidest word in the football language--and then criticize the coaching when the players don't execute the plays called. Don't get me wrong, I think the playcalling was poor at points but the real thing going on here: this team is not very good! We don't have athletes. We don't have talent. We don't have experience, which I guess might overshadow the first two but I don't see any spectacular plays being made that make me say "Wow, that kid will be good next year." Just accept it.

Mizzoucoug is a bearer of truth in this matter.

Totally agree. The team just isn't that good. Mendenhall, Hill, Anae could attend 1000 meeting a week and call a perfect game and still lose by 30. Thanks for saying what I've been thinking.

I just came up from downstairs in my "mancave" watching the game. I felt pretty good about things and the direction we are heading. I figured I'd log on and see what's cooking here on the Corner. To my surprise, the first thread I see is this one with nothing but bitterness being spewed. I'm sure there is a lot of frustration in some people. But that's a product of impatience, not poor playcalling or playmaking. If you guys who are so venomous really knew what you are talking about, I think you would be up in the booth or on the sidelines calling those plays. After all, if you're so right, someone should see your intelligence and give you a big fat salary and let you take over.

I do not think impatience is the problem...and I do think the playcalling and coaching have been serious problems offensively.

It would be one thing if these examples were the first set of puzzling decisions...but really, it is just more of the same in what has to be the worst month of BYU football since 1974 or so.

Basically, I don't think fans that are upset over some of these things need the rebuke you just offered. The 4th and 4 to Kariya was beyond stupid. Not kicking the field goal would have made sense if we really felt our defense could stop this team. Contrariwise, kicking the second field goal would have made a lot more sense had we kicked the field goal on fourth and four.

Bronco, when asked, said the running play on 4th was what was practiced and planned for that situation. But it was supposed to go on a no huddle quick snap basis. It took a little longer than it was supposed to take to get it snapped - i.e. execution. But it was the play planned for that situation - and counted on an element of surprise and of the defense not having time to set up to defend the ends.

I would criticize the call if I hadn't seen Heaps having major accuracy problems and receivers still dropping a few. Patience folks - the coaches are working within the constraints of this team.

When posters talk about how we should have called a passing play on 4th on a couple of drives where UNR could not stop our passing - well if that is the case - how did we get to 4th down.

Go Cougs

Fans - stop whining - hopefully - after observing a day of rest that USU may not observe - but then again may due to having to travel home from San Diego - BYU can get ready in 4 days and go up and punk the Logies in Logan.

This is a good post. My criticism of the call is not necessarily the call...but the call given who would be carrying the ball. Kariya averages 3.2 yards per carry and there hasn't been anything in the past two years that makes me think he is capable of doing any better than that.

At that point...it comes down to mathematical probability...Kariya averaging 3.2 yards per carry, on fourth and four, in a critical situation.

I am sorry...that is just poor coaching...it is a bad idea. The reason why are almost irrelevant.

Returning back to my original question...if we knew it was four down territory...why not run on third and four?

Exactly. If you are going to run that play, you run it with JJ or Q.

Yeah, and if they go for it and don't get it you'll be saying "You need a field goal and two TDs to tie the game, why would you not take the points!? Stupid!" It's a lose-lose with some fans.

The real problem on this drive, which ended with 3 plays called as a no-huddle package according to Bronco, ie you call the package and Heaps is supposed to run all 3 bang bang bang, is that the 3rd down play which is the play that worked on 4th at Oklahoma last year was an inaccurate throw to a wide open receiver. Then Heaps was slow getting 4th down off and we lost the element of surprise.

Heaps starts to make the throws consistently, drops continue to decrease, and no fumbles, like today, and this would be a different outcome today and in the future.

I think most of us understand that...I know I do...but I still question the use of Kariya. That just seems like a poor use of resources...like asking Mark Eaton to shoot the game winning three pointer.

Precisely my point. This is a huge turning point in the game---you PUT THE BALL IN THE HANDS OF A PLAYMAKER. Don't swing it around the outside to a slow back that normally blocks or only runs up the middle. Complete idiocy. Agreed on the why not run on 3rd and 4 as well.

P.S. Juice was exciting! Glad to see him get some reps.
C

Well - perhaps that amplifies the surprise element. Although I don't think the call was as horrible as some do - I would have gotten the ball to JJ on 4th down either by pass or run. He is our most consistent weapon and proven big play guy.

But, the real issue, is why we ever got to 4th down. The 3rd down call was great, open, and Heaps missed a wide open receiver.

PS Notre Dame of the EAST is right where Notre Dame od the West is at this point. They have fewer good excuses at this point. Can't fire the new coach there yet - that would be several fired coaches in a row.

Perhaps - sometimes - you just don't have the horses to win every game. Luckily, bad inexperienced teams improve faster than bad experienced teams.

Totally disagreed. The clock was already against us---in this position if we don't score, it doesn't matter anyway. Frankly, down 17 with the clock not on your side, a touchdown was the only real option if you want to win the game. Bottom line, they couldn't stop us and this move undermined the confidence of our players.

I'm going to say it was a combination of the two.

I kind of liked that the coaches tried something "sneaky." Had it been Hall and company that play would have been a different story and we'd all likely be praising the coaches for the ingenious play calling.

I don't get not going for it later in the game on 4th down, but whatever.

I wasn't expecting us to win this game, though hoped we would. I was pleased to see that the offense seemed to run smoother than before and we were actually able to hold onto the ball on the offensive side of things a bit more than in previous games. The good news is the ship seems to be righted and we're at least headed in the right direction.

I'm still concerned about the defense, though. They're coming out slow. We're giving away too many points early in the game.

I think the reason they used Kariya is because he was the one in at the time. They had planned the play for a certain situation, and Kariya was the running back in when the situation arose. If they meant to get it off quick to surprise the D, they wouldn't have wanted to wait to make a substitution. I'm pretty sure the coaches didn't plan on having a 4th and 4 during that specific drive while they had Kariya in, but they didn't want to waste the opportunity they had to get off a quick play that they had been practicing for all week. If it was up to the coaches, they would have probably preferred to have JJ in, but, he wasn't in when the call came. Just my two cents.

IMO the worst play calls/coaching decisions, in order:

1. NOT calling TO when you forced Nevada to punt with just over 2 minutes left (that TO was still sitting on the board when the clock expired). In my opinion this was inexcusable. The game wasn't over. BYU still had a chance. Just ask Jimmy Mac. Worst coaching decision of the night.

2. 3rd and 7 - Heaps leads the team down the field through the air, and 3rd and 7 at the 20-ish, they do an inside running play. Stupid.

3. 4th and 4 - I don't mind the play call. I just can't believe they gave it to Kariya. Give it to JJ or Quezada - and if they aren't in the game, then DON'T RUN THE (BLEEPING) PLAY! (p.s. Kariya shouldn't be getting playing time over Quezada IMO)

4. 3rd and 5 - 2nd half - just before the FG. 3rd and 5, and you run an endzone fade route that requires extreme precision and is a low percentage play? That is a play you run on 1st or 2nd down, not on 3rd and 5.

5. Bronco not ripping the head off that FReno punk-a beeotch who cheep-shooted Romney. Bronco should have gone all Chuch Norris on his @$$, leaving him in little bits and pieces out on the field. (this last one was TIC - and I don't think I've ever seen the Y sideline as riled up as after that play. That thug should have been kicked out of the game)
