The Falslev Punt

Seriously???

What could have been the thinking there?

They said it was a coaching decision... Who would have made that call?

First punt jitters? Maybe he was booming them in practice? I have no idea really. Sounds like it was a beauty. I didn't see it though.

The idea was that he could make a read and run a fake punt or punt it. Obviously it went horribly wrong.

"Que" looks like he is amped. Make the most of it young fella!

IN the post game Bronco said they hoped for a weakness on the edge to exploit with a run, this is a play they practiced and all week and Faslev was nailing the punts when needed--until it counted.

Bronco made the call and took responsibility for it. A little better execution and it was probably a good call.

I kinda wish Bronco didn't admit that. I know us fans want an answer for it, but now it's made public. IF we ever see him back there again... Other opponents will now be prepared for a fake punt.

Totally agreed. Of course, knowing Bronco, he'll never try it again so why not tell the world? I still say it was a good idea and I like the aggressiveness and the option top punt it if it looks like you can't get it.

I guess I don't really consider it a fake punt. It's more of a punt with the option to run if the side is weak. I would expect a coach that did his homework would already be suspicious if a different punter ran on the field that hadn't been in film.

It's a great play, and we should try it more on 4th and longs inside the 50 with Stephenson's accuracy problems. The problem is, with a right footed kicker you need to run to the right, and the reason the play broke down so badly is it was already on the right hash. There was nowhere to run in the first place.



It pretty much sums up our coaching this year: putting our guys in bad posiition, and then blaming them for non-execution.

That is a pet peeve of mine. Running and passing to the short side! I think it happens waaaayyy too much!!

I've heard a lot of it here and in other forums. But not from the coaches, they've acknowledged mistakes plenty.

Actually, the fake punt was doomed to fail from the get go. I noticed immediately that it was Stephenson back there. As I was pointing it out to my cousin, a bunch of Nevada players were pointing it out as well. Bringing Falsev in for the fake is a good idea. Perhaps running Stephenson out there as well, but having Falsev lineup as one of the three blockers right in front of Riley. Then right before the snap he closes the gate and then either runs or pooch punts it. It might be more disguised that way.

It's not a fake punt, even moreso not when the announcer announces over the speakers "In punting the ball is JD Falslev."



It is like an option read. The "punter" takes off running and looks for an opening. If he doesn't find one, he punts it away. The problem is that he had nowhere to run because he is right footed and the play was designed to go to the right, and the ball was on the right hash. Good play call, stupid time to call it.

They have acknowleged their own mistakes. But you can search "we didn't execute" and it would come up maybe 100 times during every postgame session. Who didn't execute The players. Because they weren't fast enough to stop the run? Or physical enough? Or just were in bad position to make a play on the run? My money is on the last one.
