Top 3 Keys to Victory v. UNR

Name the 3 key things you need to see from BYU, in order for them to win the game.



1)Win the TO battle.

2) 3rd down conversion ration need to be 45% or better.

3) Red Zone scoring--need TDs, not FGs.





What will you look for?

1. 1 or fewer sacks given up

2. win the turnover battle

3. more than 250 yards passing (i.e. balance)

1) Play tough, smash-mouth football. Nevada is a finesse team (so was Cal), so we need to run well and our defense needs to hit hard.

2) Real tackling. Our guys have been in position on most plays vs. Air Force and FSU, but they let two good running teams run right past them for big pickups.

3) Don't drop the ball!

1. Passing Efficiency Rating at about 150 (what can I say, kitic has converted me)

2. Assignment sound defense. Don't try to be the hero and make the play, stay with your assignment and you'll make plenty of plays.

3. Heaps first good game of the season.

i will look to third down conversions. we need to keep the offense on the field. flat and simple.

I lilke number two. I forgot that one. Nevada put the ball on the ground like four times last week. one one resulted in a turnover but still. if we can nab a few of those and convert on third downs we should win.

Score more points than they do. THE number 1 key.

1. Better play by our Defensive ends to contain the runs to the outside and stretch the field better.

2. We can't have 3 and outs by our offense. This will wear down our defense just like it did against FSU and make a close game look like a blow out.

3. Passionate play by both sides of the ball, receivers diving for balls, linebackers laying people out, the D-Line putting pressure on the QB, I want to see an emotionally invested team this weekend.

1. Balance the Offense. Need both the run and the pass to win this one. Need to establish the passing game to open up the holes for JJ.



2. Efficiency on offense, consistency on defense. The Offense needs to move the ball. Needs to pick up 3rd downs, and cash in on blue zone opportunities. Need sustained drives to keep the D fresh. Defense needs to hunker down, and bust some heads. Too many missed tackles the last 2 weeks. Like Bronco says, "Assignment sound football".



3. Ball Security. BYU has given up the ball 5 times in the past 2 weeks. They only have 2 takeaways this season. That doesn't tell the whole story. The whole team has a case of fumble-itis. In 3 games the Cougars have put the ball on the ground 10 times. Even when BYU recovers, that usually results in a dead play with few yards gained, or possibly a loss of yardage on the play. Hold onto the football!

I read that deep shades of blue article too. Great stuff analyzing how ND blanked Nevada.



After reading the article I would list the following three keys:



1. Score first and often. Getting up on them early through deep passing plays or DiLuigi runs will take them out of their game plan and make them pass more.



2. Convert on 3rd down. As they say, the best defense is a good offense keeping the other offense off of the field.



3. Blitz two or more people all day. By design in the pistol offense they let one man go free who then has to make a decision which the QB reads and reacts to. So if they are going to let one go, bring two or three extra. Notre Dame did this and it totally messed up Nevada's offense. Every gimic offense has a fatal flaw, and this is the fatal flaw of the pistol--not being able to account for a blitz of two or more.

Agree with one and two.



As for 3: with all due respect - get over yourself... Heaps did fine in game 1, and had great moments in game 3.

1- Play good assignment defense

2- Catch the dang ball

3- Don't alternate Heaps and Nelson. (sorry I couldn't help throw that in)

Someone said it already but #1 is: SCORE EARLY, BYU is not geared to orchestrate large comebacks.

#3 Don't let Nevada sniff the endzone

As for 3: with all due respect - get over yourself... Heaps did fine in game 1, and had great moments in game 3.

I don't think the hawk was talking trash about heaps. Perhaps he, like I, want a legitimate "good game". Not flash in the pan brilliant moments. Just a solid game; no ints, sustained drives, get the team in the endzone a couple times. This isn't the FSU defense we are talking about here. Heaps (if he is who everyone on here claims he is) should tear these guys up!!!!

That's where you lost me Boise. I'll be happy to keep Nevada rushing under 200.



I guess that's why this is the "keys" thread. If we hold them to less than 150, BYU should have this one in the bag.
