Phil Steele calls for BYU over Nevada

In his daily blog today forecasting Top 25 and other significant games, Phil Steele called for a BYU win over Nevada http://www.philsteele.com/Blogs/2010/Sep10/DBSep22.html.



Given that it is not a Top 25 matchup, he does not give details of why he supports a BYU win....



Steele has been a big believer in Nevada in the past and continues to do so, but his computer system must be all over BYU here for him to come out for a BYU upset....

Maybe his computer does not take into account injuries and a suspension...

Phil is right. I think so anyway. The injuries and suspensions will not beat us at LES this weekend.

We will win.

Come on, Chicken Littles, the sky is NOT falling. BYU will beat FReno on Saturday. It'll be a tough game, but we'll get it done.

I like the thread title. I'm callling for BYU to beat Nevada as well. I just am not sure they will.

By the authority vested in me as the current leader in the Cougar Corner Football Predictions Contest, I declare that BYU WILL beat FReno.

IMO this game is almost entirely on BYU's defense.



I think BYU will be able to move the ball on Nevada's defense. Eastern Washington had over 400 yards of offense against them for cryin' out loud. Cal had close to 500 yards. CSU doesn't count for obvious reasons but even their QB threw for almost 200 yards.



BYU should be able to move the ball and score enough points to win IF their defense can buckle down. I know that is a big "if" based on results so far this season but IMO that is what it's all about.

Love the optimism, just don't understand it. I watched UNR play last week and they are the best offensive team we will have played so far. I give us no chance of beating them. Our offense will put up points, but given how inept our offense has been this year, we won't get anywhere close to a win tomorrow. The only time our offense has looked remotely good was against UW and their D is terrible.



52-21, UNR. Otherwise we will be just fine.

And yet, their D is worlds better than FReno's. I don't get how people are saying we have "no chance" of beating FReno. They are a TERRIBLE road team, they have ONE playmaker - just like UW. Contain the QB, win the game, simple as that.

We don't know if Nevada is a poor road team or not. They haven't played on the road. They have several play makers.



They're top RB has 320 yards rushing and 4 TDs. Our leading rusher has 260 yards and 1 TD.



They have TWO wide receivers with 12 catches and over 200 yards receiving. We have one wide receiver with more than 5 catches and no WRs with more than 70 yards receiving.



They have eight players who have at least one play of 20 yards or more. BYU has four.



If Nevada only has "ONE playmaker" then by comparison BYU has fewer than zero.



This is going to be a VERY difficult game to win.

I agree but why is our offense going to magically be way better in one week? it will take a few more weeks before that happens. but by the time we play utah we are going to beat them because or d is pretty good and our offense will be clicking by then.



reno is better this year than they have ever been. people just need to realize that. you can' simply rely on the past. this year is differnt. byu is worse than they have been in yearas and nevada is better than they ever have. its okay to say we might lose. if we win we will have beat the odds and really pulled it together in an aamzing way.



nobody doubts that we don't have a chance. of course we have a chance for the reasons mentioned. but if you look at the facts it is obvoius this will be a difficult game for byu. significant changes must happen offensively if we are going to win.

Why will the offense be magically better? Because it won't be magic is why, it will be down to hard work. For the first time all year we will have 1 QB getting all the game prep repetitions to work with the offense on. The O will have more flow, more sync, better timing, and the game plan will be tighter as it will be for the strengths of 1 QB. No magic required. I think the O plays worlds better, allowing the D to be better rested, to play faster--especially late.

Can't argue that. I endorse this post.

It all rests on the O, especially with the end of the silly 2-QB system. Nevada does not really play defense, it has played poorly on the road over the last several years, and only wins if Kaep runs well.



Given all that, it also depends on whether Bronco can rally the team and get then to play focused. BYU is in a must-win situation (which FSU was in last week), while Nevada is just happy to be 3-0.



Historically, teams that just pulled a huge upset as a big underdog tend to poorly if they go out the next week as a road favorite. Good ex. TCU at SMU in 2005 after upsetting no. 3 OU in Norman.



If there was a very a good week to take on Nevada, this is it.

That's all I heard about FSU's D before that game too. I heard over and over how FSU's D was terrible, but it sure didn't translate to that on Saturday.



All I know is that I watched UNR play last week and they destroyed Cal.

Ditto. I was thinking the same thing. After Nevada had played how it has and seen BYU play as BYU has, they are going to come in overconfident and get their you-know-what's handed to them. We can't underestimate giving Heaps a solid week of reps and gameplanning for what he can do with DiLuigi in the backfield. I am really looking forward to this game. Win or lose, I am excited to watch Heaps progress, and I hope he hangs 50 on em (although I haven't seen anything to think that is reasonable, but that's why I said "hope").
