Can Our Offense Get it Done?

Our offense is going to have to put up at least 35 to beat these guys.

In my opinion our offense is the key to winning this game. If they can avoid going three and out and keep the ball in their hands then our defense will perform much better throughout the whole game. Our D has done pretty well in the first half of all our games. Its the second half where things fall apart. That is surely largely in part due to all of our offense not being able to stay on the field. They are just getting tired and beat up.

If our offense can get it together saturday at home then we have a shot because we keep the ball out of kapernick's hands and our defense will perform at a higher level throughout the whole game.

Our relatively undisciplined defense will surely give up some large plays but if our offense can get it together then we may be able to overcome them. One this is for sure, we can't rely on our defense only to win this game. Our D is too young and nevada's offense is too good. It sup to jake and co to get their act together.

I do not buy it. I do not see nevada as world beaters and we give them too much credit. They ae 3-0, all wins at home, and beat only 1 decent team in cal. Had they played our schedule, they would sit 1-2 just like us. Win over a PAC-0 team at home, 2 road losses. Jeeze, Notre Dame thumped them last year in South Bend 35-0. Nevada does not travel well. They are not as potent on offense away from home, their defense is suspect, and they rely on 1 guy to win for them--Kaepernick. I expect us to zone the crap out of him and make him throw to beat us, like we did to Locker.

WE need the offense to be better, but I not not think we will need 35 to win. I think 30 will do it. I do not see Nevada scoring over 30 on us, and they may struggle to get over 24 at LES. We have a proud team, that is wounded and wants to make a statement. I think they will, because we will be ready on both sides of the ball.

I sure hope your right but I disagree about them struggling to get over 24 at les. Washington got 24 at LES and Nevada's offense is WAY better than Washington's. I know nevada has not played anybody good and i know that their games are at home. They also have a history of playing bad on the road. All good points. I also agree that that BYU is going to come out VERY hungry. Home field will be a big advantage this Saturday.

But if our offense can't get it together we are not going to beat Nevada. Nevada has averaged 51 at home. take off 20 points then for playing away from home, that is 30 points. If that is the case, our offense must still put up more than it has all year.

Kapernick is legit. He can run obviously but he can throw as well. he is better than locker in my opinion. the best thing we have going for us though is that their defense is very mediocre if not crappy. Its up to the offense to have a great game.

I know byu is capable of beating nevada. I don't think by any means they are world beaters. They do however have a very potent offense this year and will likely end the year as a top 25 team.

Washington got 17. Had they got 24, it would have been a loss. 23-17. Which is the fewest point UW has scored this year, including against Nebraska at home.

I think we get it done at LES.

What I see is a team that put up 50+ on Cal, a team that has a QB that is better then any we have faced all year(he throws and runs equally well). Compound that with the fact that BYU's defense has been undiscaplined at best and cautious and hesitent at its worst. I think it is a recipie for disaster. I hope you are right and BYU finds its groove at home and the defense plays up to its potential but I have a very pessamistic attitude about this weekend, I think I might go ride my motorcycle instead of watching the game, it will be much better for my nerves.

Our O definitely has to play better, mainly because it prevents our defense from being back out on the field quickly after they got off. The O needs to give the D a break consistently, i.e. have long drives that chew up the clock. Our D has proven it can hold up under those circumstances (see the game v. Washington time of possession and the result of that game). We got killed in the second half of both games because we were getting killed on time of possession. Of the 15 mins available in each quarter, in both losses we averaged 7:30 in the 1st Qtr, 6:28 in the 2nd, 6:05 in the 3rd and 3:50 in the 4th. Compare those numbers to the Washington game (10:07, 7:18, 8:24 and 6:23) and you'll clearly see that the defense just simply ran out of gas by mid 3rd quarter of the games and couldn't stop them anymore. In the Washington game, they only lost the time of possession battle in the 2nd and 4th quarter, clearing winning the 1st quarter and the 3rd. This balance/winning the time of possession helps the D out more than I think people understand.

Wnning the time of possession is a two fold goal. When the offense has the ball longer they have a greater LIKELIHOOD (not that they wil) of scoring AND it gives the D long stretches of time to catch their breath and gameplan with coach hill on what they are seeing on the field. I expect to see this again happen this saturday... This is a young team and young teams historically play better at home and we need to be patient with OUR team.

I hope you are right. I am not sure I can stomach losing to Nevada. I still remember the hate that I saw from that team in 2002 and then also after they wussed out on us in 08 and what they did to BYU's independance plans, it would be insult to injury to get pummeled by them on the field.

We will not get pummelled by Nevada. Ever. Not at LES, not in Reno. Ever.

Listen, we have a ways to go, but we are not a horrible team with no players. We are just a team out of sync. Once that changes, we will be very good. Not saying top 25 good, but good for a rebuild year.

I do not think we lose at LES this year. Just need to get a couple of roadies.

Considering our offense has gotten worse and worse with each game, I can only hope they improve, because we are not only going to have to improve from the FSU performance, but we are going to have to convert and execute better than we did against UW. I have hope, but not too much based on the trend.

If you approach Saturday's game with this frame of mind, you might lose your testimony of BYU football around the end of the 3rd quarter. You've got to realize that Nevada is actually a decent team. Maybe in the #20-40 range. They are better than UW. They are a better team than FSU (with a slightly worse defense, much worse athletes and a better offense). They may prove to be better than AFA.

I think we can win. I don't think we will. I sure as hell hope I'm wrong. I'm approaching this game as if it were a scrimmage to end the second week of fall camp (at least for the offense, anyway).

Nevada is not better than FSU or AFA. No way. AFA and FSU can win away from home, while Nevada just does not against decent or good opposition. Go look it up. They are not as disciplined and hard charging as AFA, not as big, fast and physical as FSU. AFA gave OU a tough game in Norman, something teams rarely do since Stoops took over. Yeah, Nevada made Cal look bad, but Cal is not great.

I think sticking with starters at key positions and giving more reps will help at safety, ILB, OLB and QB. We will be more polished Saturday. And the team will play desperate at home, because everyone knows this is a must win game, whether Bronco wants to admit it or not.

They are by far and away the most explosive offensive team we have played this year. BYU's defense will have to do something that it hasn't even come close to doing all year (stopping the run) or this game will get out of hand really fast. I wish I had the confidence Lawboy has. I just don't. I have a sick feeling that the final score is going to look similar to the one that they put up against CAL.

Florida State was explosive v. Samford as well. AFA explosive the week before they played us too. Both teams did not put that up every game. Nevada will not hang over 35 on us, and I think they won't get to 30. In fact, I think they get 26. We just need more than that.

We will be better at home. We had better pursuit, better tackling at home v. UW. The crowd makes a difference that way, and it will Saturday. I trust Coach Hill to have that D ready. Just need Jake to make the reads and throws.

Look what up? Their schedule? They're undefeated on the road-well, they haven't lost anyway. I watched about half of their game vs. CSU and all their Cal game. They are a great offensive team whose offensive strengths play right into our weaknesses. Did you miss the AFA game? Did you see them run all over our guys? It's going to me more of that-only we'll also have to respect the run.

I just don't want to see any fan set himself up for a huge let down. We barely squeezed by a pathetic UW team. We got bounced by a good AFA and a decent FSU. I don't think Nevada will beat us like those two teams, but unless we are on our A-game almost across the board, we don't win this-barring something crazy.

I saw the Cal game too. Cal looked bad on D and gave up 52. When we look bad on D, we give up 35 and 34. Key to Nevada is to make Kaepernick throw it. Just like the key to beating UW is make Locker throw it. Kaepernick is a good passer, not great. His delivery is ugly. There is a reason no pro scouts are drooling over a 6'5" QB who can run it like he can. It is because his passing is shaky, and his delivery is absolutely horrible. And his arm strength is not great. But yeah, he can run it great. So could Locker, right?

I won't be let down if we lose. This is a year to build, and I understand that. I also understand we still have enough talent to win these games, just need more cohesion on offense. The defense, other than poor tackling, has been decent. We tackled better at LES as well. We will tackle better Saturday. I think we will be really physical Saturday. I think this team has something to prove. beating a ranked Nevada team gets us back on track to 8-4, which is realistic for this group.

:skeptic:  I don't know what scouts you follow, but the lowest I've seen Kapernick rated is as the #6 QB in the 2011 class. While that's probably only a 5th round pick, he's consistently rated above the likes of Stanzi, Keenum, and McElroy, and he's generally rated right with Andy Dalton. Scouts are looking hard at him, but not the ones with microphones like Kiper and McShay....you know, the Jake Locker fan club. Yeah, he has a quirky delivery, but he keeps the ball high and he has great footwork--that's what scouts care about. You can work around the rest. Even with that "ugly" delivery, he is still completing 70% of his passes with zero interceptions, even after facing the #13 pass efficiency defense in the nation--Cal. I worry about that on Saturday more than his delivery.

OK, but who did they beat? EWU, the #91 ranked D in the country, that also happens to be Non-FBS team, Colorado State, the #92 ranked D that also averages 7 pts per game on offense, and Cal. Cal sounds good at 2-1, with the #22 D, until you see Cal beat UC Davis--non-FBS team and Colorado, also horrible on offense and allowed 10 pts combined in those games. Both at home. What happened to that great team on the road again?

Like Utah, Nevada has beat up on weak sisters and the stats do not tell the whole story just yet. Plus, Nevada has 3 wins, 0 road games.

The fact this game is at LES is huge. Never underestimate where the game is played. BYU will represent at home.

If we represent at home like we did against UW, this will be at least a 2-score loss.
