Questions

Given where we are in this season, all that has been done, and all that has been said...the following questions are inquiries I never thought I would have to ask - but I ask them sincerely:



1. Why is taking 1/3 of the season for Bronco to get a "clear idea" as to what to do with the quarterback situation?



2. What prevented the coaching staff from making decisions by the conclusion of fall camp for the QB, MLB, and TE positions?



3. Why is it taking the coaches so long to warm up to DiLuigi? (I think most of the fan base was on that bandwagon while Unga was here)



4. Why is it a "season's worth of work" to get a team fully prepared to play at its potential? I mean, isn't that basically saying we will be playing at our peak level right as the final buzzer sounds and our opportunity to prove ourselves is over?



5. What if these decisions and words really mean "we are not that good?"





To be clear, I adamantly support Bronco. In the previous few years, it always seems like there was a game or two that made me scratch my head...as it stands right now, I have spent the entire season genuinely confused.



Perhaps the MOST confusing aspect of all was when Bronco basically said that part of the reason why execution was lacking on offense was that the reps were split up too much among too many players having to adjust to too many schemes...and yet, we still cannot name a starting quarterback or admit that playing two quarterbacks was just a really bad idea.



Just makes me pause...

Bronco was letting his offensive staff (Anae & Doman) make the decision and then once it was a clear a mistake had been made, he was letting his coaches attempt to fix the mistake. This approach, in retrospect was a poor one and retarded the offense's development. Bronco usually learns quickly from his mistakes. In the future, I bet we have a QB named coming out of spring, even if there is very little separation between the players.

IMO, the coaches felt, they didn't have to. That a player would eventually emerge. That splitting the reps would allow more players to get ready and provide opportunities for players to step up, stand out and take control of the position. This clealry didn't happen.

Fumbles can be tough to get over. JJ did have 21 touches last game, which is a pretty good number. Unga only had four games last year where he had over 21 touches.

Because you don't want a team to reach its potential too early (peak). You want them to be playing their best at the end of the year. It leaves a much better feeling during the offeseason - pleaes compare the excitement following the 2006, 2007 and 2009 seasons vis a vis the 2005 and 2008 seasons.

Bronco made mistakes. His coaches made mistakes. He gave them time to fix them. When it seems they aren't, he is now stepping in to do so. Will admitting the two QB system was a mistake fix anything? Change anything? Get those reps back that could have been used to prep one QB? This is a classic case of "no use crying over spilled milk."



What's done is done. What is important is that these decisions are made quickly and improvement is seen from here on out.

I spoke with a former player yesterday who happens to have a son on the team and his take was that "this team just might not be very good." I don't necessarily think he has any more insight than the rest of us, but when I asked him about attending Spring and Fall practices, that was his comment. Take that for whatever it's worth.

I understand this response...I suppose a clarification on my part would be useful. This season, I got the impression that the season itself would be used to sort out some position battles. We are now three games in and are JUST starting to make adjustments to rotation that would typically reflect a normal operation for a given season.



Shouldn't we view spring ball and fall camp as the audition and kickoff in week 1 as the show?



I know this ties into some of your previous responses and some of my own thoughts...but as each week passes by, one would think some decisions could be made.



Those of you who know football better than I do...please edumacate me.

Yes. The season is not the time to figure these things out. The coaches thought they could and they thought wrong. Many of these position battles, IMO, didn't have a wrong answer to be made. There are/were talented players to choose between. No decision was made in any of them so no one is currently prepared by getting the requisite number of reps.



I think BYU, the coaches and the players would have been much better served if decisions had been made - for one player over another - at multiple positions and simply gotten those players the reps instead of trying to split them up over such a large period of time.
