Sorry, couldn't help it.

Bronco's quote:
Bronco:"You'll probably see fewer player playing. (With rotations) we haven't played the same players, in the same schemes together enough."

The main area we rotate is QB, LBs and TE. The WR rotations are the same as ever. So I think we see 4 starters at LB named, other guys go in rarely, same with 2 TEs, and the QB might resolve itself due to injury.

I think that no matter what you take from the FSU game, we learned that Jake Heaps is not afraid to sit in the pocket and will take big hits. The kid is not afraid. You can build on that. And I think we will, starting today in practice.

So is Nelson injured? I thought those were just rumors. What is the story there.

The coaches just screwed up bad. We are now where we should have been in August. Instead of sticking with our identity and philosphy, pickign those who fit in it best, and then getting them the reps necessary we fumbled around with indecision and tried to work out a system that would delay us making the hard decisions.

now we are behind. the offense won't start clicking for weeks going forward. By the end of the year we may have a chance to beat Utah but we will always be at least 4 weeks behidn because of the coaches and their indecision.

its alright though. This year we have a really tough schedule. It just happens to come on a rebuilding year. I think the coaches are slowly realizing their mistakes and are now set on fixing them.

how they didn't anticipate the two qb system and not picking starters at key positions would hurt becuase all it did was result in nobody getting the reps they needed is difficult to swallow and hard to understand. i am no coach but it makes perfect sense to me and has for months.

the philosophy of playing everybody until someone pulls away makes little sense.

here is to the coaches naming starters and getting them the reps together they need to succeed.

Not a rumor. Just on the down low from what I saw. He had a finger on his passing hand taped in pre-game, and his passing was seriously affected as a result. His short range accuracy was off, and his ball lacked velocity. As he walked off the field, he kept flexing his left hand, looking down at his fingers. it was clear it was bothering him. At the time, I was on row 1 behind the BYU bench, so had an awesome view. When he came out to play, the tape was off. But you could tell he struggled to throw it. I sat on row 8 on the 5 during the game behind the BYU bench, and had great views of what was happening.

All I can say is that the QB-receiver timing is off. Either receivers are taking too long to get open(they were), or Jake was not hitting guys at the right time. Either way--timing and execution. I think it was both, depending on the play, and I expect Coach Doman to get it sorted out. I think Jake plays all game saturday. Injuries will be a part of it. But Jake still needs to play better. Getting all game prep reps will help. I heard he got 75% last week. I think he gets even more this week.

Judging by Bronco's comments at the presser today, it looks like shared blame. He said the main factor in the 8 sacks was the quarterback holding onto the ball too long, but then he later said that part of the problem is that receivers were taking longer to get open.

I am sure its a little of both. Our receiver have had trouble getting open when we play fast defenses in the past though. Max couldn't find anybody during the utah game last year because everybody was covered.

I was happy to glimmers of byu offense saturday though. It made me feel better about the team even though they still didn't perform well in the second half.

I hope that one qb getting more reps will only help the execution problem. If we can keep the offense on the field more our d wont be compeltely gassed by the fourth quarter. Our offense converting on third downs is really going to be key this saturday.

One thing I have noticed this year is the absence of the pass in the flat to the RB position. This was a staple of the LaVell years, and also of the Beck years. I think Beck threw that pass like 20 times his first game v. BC in Provo. And it is about gone this year. I think we threw it once last game--to Hague. It seems as if the RBs are drifting to the middle for dump offs more than to the flat, and that adjustment for a check down would help Jake and Riley a lot. I'd love to see Q get some passes in the flat and see what he can do one on one. Same with JJ. Like I said before, would love us to go under center more, with play action and a dump pass mixed in. Keep the safeties and LBs honest, and not let the D line just come hard at the QB like they did in the 2nd half saturday.

Exactly. Need to run draws, hb screens, hb outs.

Anae is doing a fantastically horrible job.

Most of Kariya's runs were draws. The problem is we're not doing anything in the passing game particularly well. Our throws are either off-target or dropped or tackled immediately. It's tough to win games when your passer rating is in still in double digits.

Heaps made a couple of passes out to the flat but they were either too high or way too low. I think he lacks confidence in that aspect of his game right now, but I think it will come.

agreed, so why not give him shorter downs instead of throw throw throw, punt?
S

Throw, throw, throw punt is not the problem. The problem is incomplete, complete for 3 yards, incomplete, punt.

BYU has not been accurate in throwing the ball. And they have an atrocious YPA. We're averaging 4.65 yards per attempt.

Start throwing the ball more accurately or even down field and our passing game would be well served.

True, but how do you fix that? Jake isn't great as a true freshman, but he is assumed to be better than Nelson, Lark, and Munns.

Do you increase practices from 50 minutes to 2 1/2 hours? Go from giving Heaps 50% 1st-string snaps to giving him 100%? Actually scrimmage during game week? Go live at some point every day?

This may improve timing between QB passes and receiver routes, but it could also lead to injuries or general exhaustion (dead legs) on gameday.

Are these guys not spending enough time in the film room? Are they not getting together on their own time for throw-and-catch sessions?

Or is it more Anae's play-calling issues? No deep and mid-to-long-range passes in the offense so far, which brings the defense up more playing tighter on everything else. Receivers are better covered and players are getting hit sooner after the ball reaches them. And oddly, at the same time, we're missing a bunch of the smart short-range and backfield passes too. QB completion percentage can easily go up if you can toss JJ DiLuigi a quick shovel to the flat a couple times a game.

I don't know.

Reminds me of Beck's first year with Anae, to be honest. The offense identity early was not good, but by years end, was much better. I think the players need work, the staff needs to better refine the plan for the QB it goes with, and then time to execute it in practice. I think more timing reps will help alot. I do not think we need to scrimmage, but in live drills focus some time on zone, other times on press coverages. FSU zoned up with press coverages on the outsides, and guys did not get free quick enough. So either they are poor at finding spots in the zone, poor at getting free from press coverage, or both. With experience at WR, can't be inability to find holes in a zone. But it can be with the TE. Guys need to get to spots better, QB deliver it there better. Reps will help. I think we will be humming come November.

I think the staff got a little lazy having the likes of Pitta, Hall, Unga, George around as well as all our seniors on defense. Almost overnight they've found themselves with a team full of freshman that are still getting their feet wet to college football and now the coaches are in the middle of adjusting to coaching freshman.

It astounds me how many of you, notably on this thread MARS and BOY just cannot come to grips with the fact that BYU is just not that good right now - no matter what we try. We have talent, perhaps (sometimes talent in High school - Olsen and the kid from Colorado that went undefeated in High School and we took him over Koy Detmer come to mind as just two examples - doesn't materialize in D1), but we lack experience all over the field. The OL, WR, and DBs and kicking team were supposed to have the experience to step up and take pressure off everyone else. Unga leaving really hurt. The supporting cast has not stepped up.

The coaches have tried to fix this by putting the nose guard form last year in a new role to get the best athletes on the field. They moved an OL to Center. Late last year they converted a tight end to OL. They are playing by committe where none of the new guys have sufficiently stepped up - FB, TE, LB, mostly.

There is not a quick fix. The coaches are not idiots (BTW I have never been a big Robert Anae fan - but he hasn't sudd enly gotten dumber and I doubt lazy)

The same kids will be on here clamoring to play Texas and Oklahoma every week as an independent.

Folks - even with our senior laden team last year - how did our offense look against Oklahoma, Florida State, TCU, and Utah. The answer is anemic. Those are better, more physical, and faster defenses than we normally play. So our coaches apparently become stupid for a few weeks each season. If we play that level of competition every week - they will become stupid every week.

We have been called the ND of the West now. Well, the ND of the East has also lost a couple of games - although they looked a bit more competitive in the process.

It is very unfortunate that this team was not able to have a couple of confidence builders early. Then Heaps could have been given the reins sooner. And he might have even survived it physically and mentally.

If we had Pitta, George, Unga, and Tonga back - Heaps or Nelson or Lark would have looked great from week 1. But we don't and the defense isn't in any better shape re experience.

You are all going to need to be patient and accept this fact: no matter what the coaches may have done differently preparing for this year - we R what we R and it may have been different if done a different way - but probably not any better.

For all you Jake Heaps worshippers and 4 season Heaps Heisman dreamers - be thankful that he got through the first three weeks healthy.

Yeah, you're right, there's no possible way to improve a football team.

There is - and they will given time - knowledgeable people are working hard to do just that
