Mix it up with the play calling

It is now pretty obvious that we don't have a lot of weapons on offense. Based on that brutal truth, I don't understand why we can't mix it up a little with the play calling (and give JJ the ball when he's hot). When was the last time we even attempted a trick play? Why the heck can't they design some situational plays for Nelson even if he isn't our clearcut starter? Why don't we try to keep opposing defenses off balance? Why don't we use the element of surprise a little since we clearly don't match up well with some of the teams on the schedule?

Couldn't agree more. Last time we attempted a true trick play? I believe that was the Crowton years. Def need to give the ball to the hot man. Totally agreed on the designing plays for Nelson---he's one of our best players and is a gamer, get him involved in the game plam.

We don't need to keep opposing defenses off balance because we just have to out-execute them. We don't use the element of surprise because even if we're outmatched, all we need to do is out-execute.

I do not agree. I think the playcalling is a real issue. we are not utilizing our weapons well enough right now. Guys were getting open, but hard to hit them when the line breaks down so much. We need to go under center more, play action, and play ball control this year. It is our best offense. The spread is not as successful. We run it better from under center, and can play action.



As to Nelson, his best play is a QB draw. Especially with a hurt finger on his passing hand, which he has. RIley was limited today by that. Jake will get better, just need that O-line to play better. They had a really rough day today. 8 sacks is really bad.

There are times though when they need to take a risk and go for a home run (especially when are having a horrendous time moving the ball in a conventional way). Right now, we fall behind with the same predictable plan and are doomed. Big plays can change the momentum of the game and give a young team confidence. Like I said, I can't even remember when we last attempted one.

While on the subject, when was the last time we truly took a sideline shot downfield to go for it all?

I had the same thought, but I think the problem with that idea is that we don't have a WR with enough speed to win a foot race against most DBs. The only one that is remotely close to being able to do that is Jacobsen, but they have been lining him up on the inside. Jacobsen has been virtually non-existent this season.

We don't have the speed to get behind FSU, AFA, or UW. There are some opponents coming later in the year that will allow us to do more of that.



This is a brutal opening schedule and we r not very good yet - double whammy.



Unfortunately we didn't have the early schedule a tesmvrebuilding should play.

Actually Bronco has tried to run a number of trick plays on kick off returns and on offense and almost always gets a penalty called for it because the refs don't believe it's fair for a vastly superior team to run trick plays. Maybe this year we could get away with some.

Ah yes, the great "intent to deceive the defense" penalty the refs made up a few years ago in the Utah game.

Hitting the deep ball isn't only about speed. BYU rarely has had the speed to get behind most opposing DBs, but that hasn't stopped them in the past. All hitting a deep ball requires is calling the right play to confuse the coverage, allowing the receiver to get open. I wonder if BYU has the protection to allow for a seven step drop.

Mixing it up for me would just be running and throwing in the same sequence.



Anae hasn't seemed to understand that one benefits the other this year.

I just want to point out that our speed on O was just fine. JJ looked fast on his feet, Chambers looked fast, and believe it or not, I saw Chambers run deep post patterns from the slot 3 times and EVERY time he had his guy beat by at least a step, but every time Jake was rushed so could not see him. Oe time, he was 5 yards open, but Jake got pressure and dumped it off. More time from teh o-line on those 5 step drops would really help us. I expect the coaches to see it on film, and I suspect we take at least 2-3 deep shots next week. The O-line just needs to step up like they did game 1.
