Bronco's approach to the QB's=sacrifice 2010?

I am really troubled by his comments on KSL from last night. I just don't understand why, if we're going to concede 2010 as a transition year with very little expectations for success (8-4 is this team's and system's absolute cieling, with a likelyl 5-7 floor), why not use it as a chance to get Heaps ready for 3 years of play? Bronco, IMHO, is insuring that Heaps isn't ready to go next year by not getting him the practice snaps and game experience that he needs. I fear that he might run with this system throughout spring, next fall and into 2011.

Take heart byutx. I don't think we can have that many more games like AF without MAJOR issues from boosters, fans, and media. Look at the uproar from the AF game where the coaching mistakes and miscue's were blatent. I don't think the coordinators and possibly Bronco could survive taking this through spring, fall, and into the season 2011.

I think if Heaps is given enough reps during the games that by mid season there will be no way for Bronco to hold him out of the whole game as he will be leading the offense down the field and into the endzone regularly. Jake holds all the keys to his future, if he can lead the team and score he will be the starter and I think it is that simple.

Go Jake!! I'm pulling for you.

Isn't using 2010 as a "chance to get Heaps ready for 3 years of play" sacrificing 2010? Isn't that what most of you want? To mail it in for 2010 to try and get Heaps ready for 2011 and beyond?

I think you're interpreting things wrong. It sounds to me like he IS trying to groom Heaps as the quarterback and part of the reasoning in the 2-qb system is to avoid throwing Heaps to the wolves when he's not ready. You're making the assumption that if he had all the snaps, he'd get ready pretty fast, but if I remember Bronco's comments from years ago correctly, he's seen quarterbacks that are ruined by too many snaps too early and I'm guessing he wants to avoid that in this situation.

Whether for right or wrong, he's trying to protect and teach the quarterback of the future using mixed snaps, and hoping that until Jake emerges, Riley will help carry the team to some wins in spite of it being a transition year.

So far, I think Heaps hasn't performed well in games. People have blamed it on his recievers and JJ fumbling but the bottom line is, he hasn't performed well in games. The way I see it is; as he performs better and starts leading drives down the field into scores (whether they be field goals or TD's), he will see the field more and Riley will see it less. I really don't think that Bronco is intentionally holding him back, I think they want him to be more trustworthy on the field before they give him more reps. This is my opinion, since I am not in the coaches meetings.

I would like to see better playcalling for Heaps.

Going in as the "throwing qb" and throwing 3 straight outs is bush league. We need to set up WR screens, HB drop offs, and hand the ball off more.

Passing - when the defense is playing for the pass - on first and second down is about the dumbest thing you can do. Instead of 2nd and 7 and 3rd and 4s, it is always third and ten. I don't care how good you are, you aren't going to complete 40% of those.

That's not the same thing though since Riley is a Junior and Heaps is a Freshman. Now, if we all think Nelson is the next Steve Young but just needs some time then he'll kick butt next year, sure go for it. But does anyone honestly see that happening? I mean it's possible, but people more than anything I think just want to watch the BYU offense in action and only Heaps seems capable of showcasing a downfield passing game.

Heaps has had less than 10 drives IIRC, and at least 4 of those again IIRC were halted by bad receiver drops and/or Ashworth stopping his route. May seem like a copout but Jake is bringing it and he's being screwed by our elite receiving corps so far. Give him a chance to get in a rhythm just as Nelson has been given the same. That's all anyone is saying. We're not at apples to apples yet.

There is an simple solution to stop this from going into 2011. Heaps walks into Bronco's office at the end of the year and says, "I am transferring if we do the 2 QB system again in 2011. Either name one of us the starter now or use spring to decide. If it is Nelson, I redshirt. If it is me, I get all the snaps except when we are blowing out the other team."

Of course with Bronco you have to use the right language, so heaps will have to use many uses of phrases like, "I see that it is best for the team ..."

Yeah, he's bringing it....half of the time. The other half of the time, he's been throwing to the wrong team. As far as the receiving corps, Nelson has shown an ability to move the chains and score with the same receivers, so blaming the receivers isn't going to get you very far.

Starting last night I got to thinking, mostly thanks to this thread, that maybe giving Heaps a RS next season wouldn't be a bad idea.

When they run with Heaps in, he has had success. Show me any different.

Your probably right but if he is trying to groom hepas in prep for him being a starter why not just wait until we play patsies and then put him in. maybe after the utah state game. I think utah's approach last year was better played then this two qb stuff.

Then who starts in 2011, nelson? do you really think he is better in 2011 than heaps or lark or even munns at that point?

He hasn't really done much to distinguish himself so far other than throwing pretty spirals to either the other team or no one.

It's like being in the twilight zone reading Sno, FDBTR, and Hawking. Riley had a whole half to himself where he was exposed but that's not enough to judge him on. However, Jake's on and off series for 1 1/2 games is enough to tell us that all he does is throw picks. I made a comment earlier that if Riley is the second coming of Steve Young then of course we play him. But if not, why not let Heaps grow? It's like you people feel sorry for Riley or something and just stick up for him to be nice. I admire that but the rest of us have a long-term view of the football program and just don't think Riley fits as is. Alright, no more comments til FSU...

Yet it's okay to judge Nelson off of the one-half where the coaches admit they didn't call the right gameplan and ignore the success he's had when they've done it right?

For either QB to thrive, they need protection like they got in week 1. Our center got worked by AFA and that resulted in 6 false starts, 1 illegal snap, and pressure on the QB with a 3 or 4 man rush. Matt Reynolds was sick. A little more time to throw gives more opportunity to check down and more time to get open before you start hearing footsteps. I would also bet that BYU will be less likely to be drawn into false starts if FSU tries ti imitate the snap count.

BTW, Utah got their freshman QB ready by about week 8 or 9 without much game experience and limited practice snaps and it worked - so quit worrying about Heaps not getting a chance to be ready in 2011. Bronco clearly stated that he thinks Heaps will be ready in 2010 but is not ready yet.

BTW, Utah is very glad they have Cain and Wynn both ready to play because Cain was Abel last week and next week and Wynn wasn't and isn't. Hopefully the investment, risk, and sacrifice made this early season will ensure we have a back-up QB ready should we need one. Nelson is taking a pounding for the cause, and he is at risk of injury. With OL play like we got Saturday, imagine the "fan" outrage if Heaps was taking the pounding, trying to make something out of nothing, and got a shoulder separation on his throwing side. Something for all the supposed "long-term" thinkers to ponder.

Good comment on the protection. I think it will be better this week.

False Starts ---I think that depends on who is playing. Heaps didn't have any false starts during the AF game. It was an issue with Riley which needs to be corrected for the FSU game. Does anyone know what the ratio of false starts our offense had during Washington? I was just wondering if the issue is just the one game or if there's a trend going between both game. Pretty hard to move the ball when you're tacking 5 yards on.
