Freshman

BSU started freshman QB Moore AT Oregon and he led them to a 38-34 victory. BSU starts freshman CBs and they do just fine. When was the last time we started a freshman at a skill position? Was it Harvey at UCLA? Was Walkenhurst (sp?) the last freshman to start at a LB spot? Is it a matter of the comfort level of risk by the coaches or that our more senior athletes are always that much better? This year BSU returned 21 of 22 starters. I truly am trying to understand.

Bronco has a great history of sarting freshmen.

Jacobson. Matt Reynolds. Unga. Ashworth. Manumaleuna. Dulan. Fuga. Tonga. Just to name a few.

He starts them if they are the best player at the position. Everyone on the planet decided that Heaps was the best player for BYU at QB before he even got here in the spring. Bronco, Anae, and Doman have not established that yet, and frankly we have seen it in games too. I think it is time for a bunch of fans/media to take a freaking chill pill and let the coaches coach. This thing is going to work itself out. I knew that the first time Nelson struggled EVERYONE was going to be calling for his benching. I am glad that all you knee jerk reactors are not the coach. The Crowton years would be a welcome relief in comparison to what BYU football would turn into if the coaches reacted to player performances the way the media and some of the fans do.

Makes me wonder what happened to all the sentiments expressed over the summer when the QB debate was heating up that "In the end, I trust the coaches and whoever they choose as QB I will support 100%."

That was a redshirt freshman that BSU started at Oregon. Small technicality, but it is a difference between Heaps and Moore.

People support the coaches as long as they make the same decision they have already made, a decision the person has made with out being able to watch 95% of practices and team chemistry, although they may voraciously read about 25% of the practices on the internet.

Thanks all. I think I overreacted to how amazing the incoming class was and that would somehow mean that more of these wunderkids would see the field early....I do trust the coaches on this who have a record most schools would die to have....

Bringing in great talent is great, but you have to walk a fine line between playing young players and veterans. If you only play young players because they are more talented you could lose older players and then you're forever chasing young talent and are never taking the time to develop others.

The mission thing has a lot to do with freshman. If they are for sure mission bound, I bet they prefer to redshirt them first.

I would add to the list that Van Noy seems to be the best player at his position, Drew Phillips seems to be the best kick and punt returner, and that Apo and Quezada looked like the 2nd-best at their positions, and none of them have got much of a chance either. It's like this recruiting class was deemed the "freshmen don't play much this year" class. Stout is the only really hyped kid that hasn't shown as well as expected in games yet.
