Starting receivers a flop

The stats on the AFA game show our starring receivers caught a grand total of one pass for 8 yards in the game. Chambers caught none, Jacobson caught none. A freshman, Hoffman, caught three and was our leading receiver (DiLuigi also caught three). One of the sports writers observed that in the second half of the game there were no balls thrown down field, nothing longer than a few yards, not stretching of the defense, nothing.



I have to say, considering the all around awful performance of several upper classmen, if I was the coach, I'd start Hoffman, Apo (I guess he's injured), Van Noy, Quezada, and there's probably some others. I wouldn't necessarily leave them in the game forever, but I'd start them, let them play, and let the "more experienced" guys sit for awhile.



I was so disappointed in Matt Reynolds play, several false starts, got beat several times, seemed lost throughout the game, that I'd probably sit him for a quarter as well.



I believe the coaches know there are several freshmen who probably deserve to start, but they want them to earn it with their play in games, and I'm ok with that. But the time may be here when they get their chance, and the coaches can honestly tell the "more experienced" players that they got beat out by a freshman.

Reynolds had the flu. You don't bench guys for powering through illness to play.

It's hard to judge the receivers when they don't get the ball thrown their way. There were 25 total pass attempts this game compared to 45 pass attempts against Air Force last year. I don't even think that Jacobsen had a single pass thrown his way all game long.



That being said our receivers need to catch the ball when it's thrown to them even if it is just once a game.



The one play that bothered me the most was when Heaps ran a great play action and then through a perfect deep ball to

Ashworth. For some reason Ashworth slowed down and that hesitation meant that he missed the ball. I don't know if he gave up on the route or lost the ball or what but it was ridiculous. I felt bad for Heaps after that play, he threw a perfect ball, there wasn't anything else he could have done to get it to Ashworth and Ashworth screwed it up.



(I'm not saying this type of thing didn't happen to Nelson either)



As far a Reynolds goes I've heard he was sick and not only that but the d-line of Air Force was barking out calls and screwing up the snap count for BYU. Hence the many false starts.

Reynolds was also switching from LT to RT to protect Riley and Jake, which is probably the dumbest idea this century. They are two different positions and have nothing to do with each other, except they both share the name "tackle."



You can do it in video games and get away with it... I think that is how Anae views the offense, like a video game, and he can keep doing the same plays over and over. Not running one to set up another.
