Reflections on the AF game

After giving it a few days I'm not nearly as bummed out about losing as I was originally. I don't feel like I felt last year after losing at home to FSU. For these reasons I remain very hopeful for a very successful season:



1. Have we all forgotten that this was our first road game - with a young team what can you really expect. With one road game under our belts I imagine we cut our mistakes in half at least

2. It was 9/11, it truly was Air Force's day. And good for them. Is there any team in the MWC you'd rather lose to than Air Force. If I had to pick a team to lose to in the MWC it would be them. If history is any indication, our conference title hopes are not dead, as good as AF looked, I don't see them beating Utah or TCU and what if we can get one of those two - its still very much up for grabs. Besides, it was the first "send off" from our conference, now we know how much people will want to take it to us.

3. The future is bright - even with 3 or 4 more losses I can handle once in every four years not getting 10 wins. At least on our rebuilding year we are still relevant, just look at the team we just beat or the growing number of FBS (BCS AQ) teams who have lost to FCS schools in recent history - that right there should help ease the pain.

4. I trust how well as a team, a program and a coaching staff we bounce back after a loss. Win or lose Saturday I think we will start to see things come together and I expect a winning streak thereafter. Yes, it will probably end at TCU but that is expected. What I'm getting at is the future is bright.

Air Force has a very good coach. He also gets great kids who buy into the discipline of the AF offense. (I am one of those that thinks they are a bit dirty in their play, but they do it within the rules, or at least until caught.) And they have had stellar teams rise up from time to time and get double digit wins. I think this could be one of those teams for AF. BYU was actually beaten by a very, very good AF team. If they play with the same kind of heart against :utard: and TCU that they showed last Saturday, they could surprise alot of people this season. Only time will tell.



My thoughts on why some of the young Turks didn't play as much on defense as we had hoped, had more to do with Hill rather than Bronco. Bronco has said he's turned everything over to Hill on defense, so it was all Hill's call who played and when last Saturday. Trying to pin this on Bronco not wanting to play frosh just doesn't make sense when he wasn't the one making that decision. Given that the AF game came so early in the season, Hill really must have felt his best chance of success was to play more experienced players who have seen how BYU typically handles AF. Unfortunately, what was our immovable defense met the irresistable force of the AF ground game.



I agree that the coaches, Hill especially, will figure it out and win at least one game they were supposed to lose this season, whether it's FSU, TCU, or especially :utard:.
