Riley to Start Against FSU

As long as they aren't alternating series I guess I'm fairly ok with it.

I guess this "situational" emphasis means that we will just see how things go?

My guess is they are starting Riley to take pressure off of the Freshman as far as starting in a place like FSU. I am hoping that they give him the ball a series or two later and let him play out the half.

Translation: I want to put Jake in a position to succedd and I don't think on the road at FSU is the right place for him to take the majority of the snaps? Maybe next week at home against Nevada?

I am also tired of it. I was hoping that they would name Heaps the starter simply because of that even though I am afraid that the fans and media will turn on him if he performs badly against FSU and we lose.

I agree. Let's face it. Almost everyone of us expects us to get our butts handed to us by FSU this week, and after watching the Air Force game, why shouldn't we? Our trips East of the Mississippi have not been too kind. Do you really want to have a coming out party for your Freshman QB in such a hostile territory? I doubt it. Instead, you give him a few series and see what happens with Riley. If Nelson gets slaughtered, then you feel justified in starting Heaps at home against Nevada the next week, which should be a much more managable game. The only thing that throws a kink in the works is if Nelson comes out, has an awesome game, and finds a way to beat FSU. Then its back to the drawingboard. If that's the case, I sure wish we wouldn't have burned Heaps redshirt status. I'm just as anxious as anyone to see Heaps start, but not in a position where he is set up to fail.

Did any of you watch the OU/FSU game last week? FSU is not a dominant fball team...IF you have a QB who can throw. I say go into this game determined to WIN, not concede defeat, and to go with the personnel who give you the best chance of WINNING THE DAMN FOOTBALL GAME! Against FSU, Landry threw for 321 yards in the FIRST FREAKING HALF! Riley Nelson managed, what, 73 yards in the whole GAME against AFA?



If we want to beat FSU (which we all do, right?), then we need our best PASSING qb in the game. And that person is NOT Nelson. It's Heaps. Again, FSU is NOT Alabama. Not even close. Going into Doak Walker Stadium IMO wouldn't be any different from going into Rick Chex stadium. FSU is not that good, despite our abysmal game against them last year.

Well since Bronco obviously has a different Idea then you, why don't you send him an email correcting is bad thinking so we can go into this game thinking we are going to win :roll:



Believe me when I tell you that what they are doing is what Bronco and Co. think with give BYU the best chance to come out with a victory. NO ONE unless they are in the coaches offices helping them game plan know what BYU is doing to plan for FSU so why do we fly off the handle and get mad when the coaches do something that doesn't make sense to us? Have we all forgotten that Bronco has led the team to 4 straight 10 win seasons? I am pretty sure he knows how to structure and game plan that can be successful.

I could care less about who gets the first snap. I just want to see an offensive game-plan that is put together with an eye towards winning a game, not one put together with an eye to being equitable to two players at the expense of the team.

I don't think that you need a lot of poise in this game... Just reach back and throw. And I think Jake has enough to get it done, though after the abysmal way he has been handled (benching him for a rookie mistake - when others are making the same type of mistake over, and over again - and then playing the wrong type of player over him in the wrong situation - not going in for scrub minutes when the game was CLEARLY out of hand, and the mainstay qb was pulling up blank after blank - being subbed in for a 4th and 2 after sitting on the bench for 45 minutes in real time, and then subsequently pulled out again after Air Force calls a timeout) I am not sure why. He is a special kid.

The Situation is a game at Florida State, so Riley Nelson starts.



I agree with the decision to start nelson. It fits the situation.



Give Heaps most of the reps in practice, but let Nelson do his thing for the first series and then let Jake take over. Have Nelson come in for one, maybe two, plays here and there to take advantage of his running ability.

Penn State went into Alabama and started a true freshmen at QB so why can BYU go into FSU and do the same?

Problem is his running ability will probably prove fruitless now that everyone knows his throwing is abismal. Do you really believe he will be able to run more successfully against FSU than AF? Just because he led them to two td in the 1st means exactly jack squat now that the teams know how to completely shut him down. If he plays he had better learn to make a lot of throws downfield-heck even 15 yards downfield would be nice-or he is going to have some very short drives. We know what that did to our D last week.

And giving Heaps most of the reps in practice would totally confuse the team and cause some serious leadership/player problems not to mention a woefully prepared starting QB.

I agree. That was pretty much my point. If BYU coaches really want to beat FSU, then Heaps has got to be the man. If they want to "protect Heaps" and his "fragile psyche" from the bid bad Criminoles and decide to let Nelson take most of the meaningful snaps in the game...then they are pretty much conceding a loss, which in my book is 100% unacceptable to do and heads should roll.

I wonder if Landry had receivers who could catch and hold onto the ball and if his OL gave him time to throw. I read Matt Reynolds was bent over in pain from FLU. Maybe we will see an OL more like we had VS UW. I hope so. Give Nelson or Heaps time and they will throw better and receivers will get open.



This team is weaker at RB, FB, TE1, TE2, and QB compared to last year on offense as expected. Unexpectedly, the receivers are a disappointment so far and the OL didn't show up Saturday. The defense I'd weaker ar DE and LB, and Safety as expected compared to last year and throw in 2 Shankar punts and you have a mess.



This year is a complete rebuild and we r nit yet very good. And who would have expected greatness, especially on the road against good teams, at this point.

I can totally see this working out. Now that Bronco has came out saying Nelson will start, that gets FSU preparing for Nelson, and a little(I hope) on Heaps.



Nelson and Heaps are two totally different QB's, that our last two opponents have noticed. It takes alot to prepare for your next game ESPECIALLY if you have to prepare to two total different QB's. Bronco is using this to BYU's advantage.



This doesn't mean Nelson will get majority of the snaps, but keeps our opponents game off their game.



I just hope Bronco is thinking like this :~(

He's done pretty well towards the beginning of the games so far, so we'll see what happens. Hopefully the QB situation will become more situational as Bronco said it might, and Heaps will get put in the second FSU shows signs of picking up Riley's playing style (if they're not already prepared for it going into the game).

I still can't understand why they went away from playing Heaps - why wasn't Riley yanked after his fumble? Maybe they are just starting Riley to keep FSU game planning for the run and not trying to fix their pass D - then they plan on throwing in Heaps for the rest of the game.



Regardless of what they do, it is clear that you can't take turns playing QB, it only worked for one game. A starter must be named and I am on record as saying that until we have a main guy we will not have consistent wins. Once we do - regardless of the guy (I'm hoping Heaps - greater up-side) we will improve on each game rather than go back and forth.
