Game plan for Heaps

One point that I haven't seen made, but is kind of talked about is the game plan for playing Heaps. It seems that Anae wants to put Heaps in and have him make throws that Max was making as a senior. What we are missing is the confidence and rhythm plays that you typically see an offensive coordinator call to build up a new quarterback.

Where are the wide receiver screens, one step quick throws to the wide outs, running back flares, and other high percentage throws? Run a few routes designed to get five yards mixed with some good running plays. Then progress the offense as the game goes along. I believe one of the first throws they had Heaps make was a 40 yard bomb to Jacobsen against UW that was overthrown.

Agreed. A lot of the offensive problems can/should be laid at the feet of the coaching staff. Bronco, Anae and Doman have not done a good job of putting Jake in a position where he could be both effective and successful. Nelson, who as was stated elsewhere, is much more of a "wing-it" player than a rhythm player. The lack of rhythm from the coaching staff has affected Heaps more adversely than they have clearly anticipated. I think it's part of why we'll see a "re-evaluation" this week in regards to the QB situation.

Some of this could also be Heaps changing out of the designed play to go with a bigger play, it also may not, we'll never know what plays Heaps audibled out of while at the line.

I think when Heaps is in, Anae seems a bit less likely to hand off because Heaps is the "throwing" quarterback. If anyone could benefit from a good running game, it's a freshman Heaps. In fact, I'd like to see BYU with a 50/50 run-pass ratio while Heaps is in the game. With a veteran O-Line and DiLuigi and a few sevicable running backs, I'd expect the running game to average 3 yards per run. I think Heaps has been facing a lot of 2nd and 10s, when he should be facing more 2nd and 6s.

Great question.

The answer is, I don't know. Which makes me wonder if Anae even knows what he's doing.

Those are "Riley" plays. I have seen at least 3 wr quick outs by him. I think he only has 1 out of 3 converted, none for really any yards.

And Anae doesn't know what he's doing. I think I have seen 80-90% throws from Jake.

Anae probably read too much CougarCorner over the summer and was therefore under the impression that Heaps could go out Sept. 4 and make all the throws Hall was making as a senior.

But then he heard Riley's senior numbers, and was like, those sound good too. What to do? What to do?

Hell, let's play 'em both.
