What if the future isn't what you think it is...

Heaps is the future seems to be an undisputed fact. So I was just hypothesizing and wonder how far my fellow cougar fans would let the future go before they started to worry about the now again.

This isn't meant to say anything about who I think should be QB, I am just interested to see how fast people will turn on Jake, because it took all of 2 quarters for them to throw nelson to the wolves.

So lets see.. some possible scenarios:

Heaps plays the majority of the downs at FSU throws three interceptions and leads only a field goal drive or so. Is it time to question Jake? Play Riley more? Take the lose and move towards the future?

A similar performance against Nevada? A very winnable game is turned into a loss from QB mistakes made by heaps? Do we sit him, or do we stay with him towards the future?

BYU finishes the season 6-6 and loses in a bowl game? Is this enough wins to guarantee that Jake is the future even if there has been no improvement?

Or is it going to last until next year? Say we get crushed at Texas and our next game in the season?

Would we sacrifice two seasons to have a great season in 2012?

I am just interested to see how far people will go to see Jake play, or how many loses they are willing to accept for the future of BYU that they see wearing number 9. I know its irrelevant because he will have the breakout game this Saturday against FHE.. but sometimes people make me wonder.

If heaps doesn't perform do people call for Riley again? or do they call for Lark to take a chance?

Coaches and players need to have incredibly tough skin. Fans lack of appreciation probably led to Lavell Edwards retiring a little early.

Go Cougs

the main issue is simple: we are BYU, and having a QB that can't pass and rarely passes just isn't right for us. I'd be fine with giving heaps a year to develop, and if lark or munns are outperofming him come next year, they can start. Right now we need to give jake the best shot we can, especially if we want to continue bringing in big recruits. Unfortunately, we've already wasted precious time

First off nobody threw Riley under the bus. He climbed under it all by himself.

Second, it doesn't take a rocket scientist or an NFL scout to see when someone is doing things fundamentally wrong and when someone is doing things fundamentally correctly.

Third, it is also possible to look at the talent people exhibit and make a determination as to which will most likely do better in the long run.

So please don't join the "you guys are jumping on RIely for no reason" crowd. I have given fairly concise and accurate observations about Riley and back up my thoughts as to why he should not be the starter and Jake should. I used to be more in his camp but after watching him play this Saturday coupled with a lot of what he did last Saturday, I prefer Heaps. And now that his tendencies are public you can bet the farm that every team we play this year will look to defend him the same way AF did in the 2nd half.

This is Heaps' freshman year and it's an all-around rebuilding year. I don't care how many mistakes he makes. This kid needs, like Barkley, Landry Jones, Jacory, etc., a year to catch up to the speed of the game. Next year we are on the big stage multiple times. If next year we are just breaking Heaps in, we are screwed. Let's get him in now no matter how many losses or picks. Again, this is a rebuilding year. Treat it as such. A reasonable fan would understand this.

I am not joining any camp that says people are jumping on nelson for no reasons. I think I tried to express the fact that, that was not my intention. I was just curious to see how much patience people would have for an under performing Heaps, as they have had for an under performing Nelson.

One half was too much to waste letting Nelson get up to speed, but apparently even a season or more is how much it will be worth for Heaps. I am not saying anyone is right or wrong, just curious about peoples personal thoughts on the subject.

I am just concerned that people are so sure that heaps is going to be the answer to the problems. What if he never develops wouldn't that make this season a total waste?

The thing to remember about this thread is that fifthqb is a huge Lark fan, and I mean no disrespect by bringing this up, I just want those who may not be aware that fifthqb is Lark's biggest supporter on this site. I think what he's trying to get at is that Lark may be our best answer.

I don't know, it's hard to make guesses about this with it so far out in the future, but I honestly hope and believe that Bronco will play whichever player PROVES that he knows his assignments, works the hardest, and is the best.

ha I am the lone Lark fan on this board. I don't see how that would effect your answers to my question though? The question remains, how long do fans give Jake to develop? He is touted as the future, but what if he doesn't pan out, sacrificing this season would not make a lot of sense. I was a supporter of letting Riley play the majority of the 2nd half until he started to play so poorly, so now I support Heaps getting a solid half, or game, but I don't believe in sacrificing an entire season if a player isn't producing. People have so much faith in Heaps, I am just trying to see the depth of the faith, since it so far hasn't been based on any college production.

You can throw Jordan Wynn in there, too. Kid took a year to develop, but has turned out to be a good QB... for a :utard:

The thing is, if Heaps doesn't pan out, there's always another QB in the mix, either one that's already here, or one thats coming in. The guys know they have to go out there and prove it, otherwise there's another guy.

Ben Olsen didn't work out for us, we had another guy step up and be better. There's always options.

My guess is that people would turn on Heaps the very second he threw a pick 6 that costs BYU a game. I was around when people turned on Matt Berry for not playing well after he broke his hand and came back to early. I was there when people were so excited about Beck in the ND game in 2004 and then turned on him when he didn't play well in losses to New Mexico and Utah and then decried that he didn't have "it" until after the TCU win. I was here last year when everyone was yelling to bench Max Hall after he threw interceptions against Tulane and we didn't dominate them like we should have (didn't we win that game by about 50?). BYU fans are very fickle and all it would take is a loss blamed directly on Heaps to turn on him. I think if that weren't the case, Bronco would have already given him the ball to let him grow into the position. That is why I have been against starting him as a freshman. I could go back even further on the BYU fans turning on a QB but I will just leave it for the current era unless you really want me to go on.

Hypothesizing? Why do what when we have Jake Heaps??? :skeptic:

No need to worry about the future! He'll stumble along the way, he'll make mistakes, which QB in college hasn't???

Pffft... Worry about the future? :gross: Who does that anyways??? :skeptic:

I am always surprised at the rush to throw everyone under the bus and start panicking after one loss. BYU usually wins a game or two they shouldn't and often loses one they shouldn't. I think if they end up 8-4 this year they will have done well. Anything better is fantastic. It can be frustrating to be a fan but thats also part of what makes it so much fun. Give Heaps a shot start him see what happens.I still remember Ty Detmers first game as a Sophmore it was a disaster and we all should know how he did. Things will turn out fine and even if they don't Bronco would be the first to remind that there are other things more important.Go Cougars.

You must have sneezed right as he was throwing that one good pass.

I also must have missed where having 1/2 int/td ratio was good, or a 130 college rating was good.

Wynn is a quarterback who has some good games. He is not a good quarterback yet.

Nope. Only those who don't really understand football will turn on Jake, which is probably 40% or so of the followers. This is a rebuilding year, and needs to be, because next year we are on the big stage. Nobody should be bothered about what teams do to us on the Mtn and VS because the media just votes us based on the box score anyway. Next year they will be seeing us on ESPN. In other words, let Jake take his beating this year in preparation for 2011. I don't care if he throws 3 picks a game going forward. Give the kid experience...and that goes for the rest of our young guys as well. He can't be learning on the job against UT next season...
