Riley Nelson couldn't...

...start for Utah State...so what makes ANYONE (coaches included) think he could or should be the starting QB at BYU.



Look at the facts. He had 3/4 of the playing time against AFA, and produced LESS than 100 yards through the air. He couldn't manufacture a single point in over 30 minutes of football (after the 1st quarter). Yes, AFA is a good team, but does anyone really think that the Falcons D is tougher than FSU, or TCU, or Utah?



It's time for the Riley Nelson experiment to end, and for the future of BYU football to begin.



Oh, and I'm sick of watching Kariya power out 1 yard gains. Lets give the rock to Quezada already and see what the kid can do.

I think there's a great deal of angst among the BYU coaches this morning. They have a lot of decisions to make; QB, running back, linebacker, receivers, do we let the freshmen play more? or less? is BYU really an option team? and why was our defense so awful? and what was with Matt Reynolds getting about 6 false starts? he's the big stud on the OLine, and he had the jitters? maybe Reynolds needs a wakeup call, maybe he got it.

I do not understand why people are giving Kariya so much crap. Kariya is being used as a "combo back" this year, essentially a fullback. How often does a fullback break one for a huge gain? Remember last year vs Oklahoma when Kariya had over 100 yards of offense? The difference between the Oklahoma game and this year is that Kariya was the feature back for that game, he was given the opportunity to make the big plays.



This year Kariya is being asked to gain short yardage and he does that consistently. He had 3.3 yards per carry vs Air Force.

This, Kariya is used as the inside back to keep defenses honest and set up the play action pass. The plays aren't intended to be huge gainers and our blocking hasn't been great on them anyway.

On reflection, I can agree with that. However, it still doesn't explain why Quezada hasn't been given ONE SINGLE CARRY so far. He's been in the game...he has a TD catch...but he hasn't carried the ball, not ONCE.

Kariya is playing well, and playing his role. He is a between the tackles runner. Whether he needs more carries or not...who knows. I know Diluigi needs to stop putting the ball on the turf. As for Quezada...he definatley needs more carries. BYU's offense is based on a big back who can run between the tackles and wear down defenses. That is Quezada. Why not start working him in now. Between him and Diliugi would be a great running duo. It seems that this year's Cougars are very nervous about letting the young ponies run.

Kariya has been a fantastic blocker and has saved our QB's from getting sacked a number of times by picking up the blitz. He's a solid player. I too hope to see Quezada running the ball very soon.
