Yes it was painful to watch the thing last night aka game against AFA! But please let's refrain from putting the blame on one person or naming names. They traveled as a team, suited up as a team, warmed up as a team, played & lost as a team. I have always been very supportive of any & everyones comments as I have stated before but what I have been reading is really not good for anyone involved. I am & will always be the first to get on my son for his many oopsies, I should be the only one to really get on him well besides coaching staff. Yes he has had his share of moments but I doubt highly that he is owed anything and would think that if he is as bad as people have been writing that he would even see the light of day. I am a very strong advocate if you don't have ANY business on the field you should ride that good ole' pine! The wonderful coaching staff at BYU I would safely assume if they thought that by any means he was not ready for the field would waste anyones time and allow him to even bother suiting up.

I am not asking anyone to curb their ideas or comments but just tone it down a skee bit. My son has a passion for this lil game called football and lets it blur his vision which does not help his cause much. But he is dedicated to his #1 school, #2 team, #3 this game. Watching last night was very painful for me as I could only imagine what was going through his mind and I know he was trying to put a cape on from somewhere! But what I have just been reading is far more painful to me especially when many who have commented know I am a frequent flyer here. Once again I am not trying to censor what is said but just be a little bit more courteous of how you may say what you feel is in your heart.

They will always play and win or lose as a TEAM, there are 4 qtrs and 11 players on the field at a time it is hard for just one person to play all the positions on the field at one time, hence one person is not the cause of a win or loss.

Thanks as always,

Thanks for your input. Sometimes people look for an excuse or an escape goat when dealing with setbacks. I think most will calm down and be settled in a few days. Don't think that everyone has the same sentiment. Sometimes it is the very VOCAL minority that speak the loudest but they don't represent the majority...I should know about that...I live in California. I hope you and the group you have gathering this coming week have a fun trip to the FSU game. :)

Very true. That's why I waited a day to start posting. :)

Appreciate the perspective. Must say that sometimes I think some of us post on here to vent and release the frustration unaware of the effect. Unfortunately, unless someone sticks around on this board for some time may not see all the great, wonderful comments that are made, which is tragic.

I admit, last week's discussion on fumbles and your 2 cents on the matter made me rethink coming on here to lament. I don't mind so much the potential of "offending" a player or coach (that's part of making a career out of being in the limelight), but I do mind potentially giving cause to sadden a player's mother.

Chambers is my fav player and will be until he grads. What i dont understand is WHY in the world dont we throw down the field more to him.. I think we all have a passion for BYU football, and sometimes we just get a little excited when we lose. BYU is young and growing pains are part of the deal...I will always bleed blue GO Cougars...

I'd strongly suggest ignoring the vocal anti-Chambers group. There's only a small handful of them, but they just won't shut up and come out in force whenever he makes a mistake or we lose a game. They won't play nice, regardless of who they hurt, because they don't care. BYU unfortunately has a lot of fans like this, and I've tried to argue with them, but they refuse to change and the best course is to ignore them completely.

Because we have never completed a long downfield pass to him. He is never open, and if he does somehow manage to get his hands on it he drops it. That is the reason. As far as only the coaches and Mrs. Chambers being the only ones that should be able to get on O'neill, I completely agree. Thats why we aren't calling him or sending him emails venting our frustrations with him. We are voicing them on a forum for other fans, not players. I really have no ill will towards him, I just have yet to see how he is earning his starting position.

Aaaand I'd start the ignoring right here Linette. "Never completed a long downfield pass to him," really? This guy is the most vocal and unfair anti-Chambers "fan" on the board.

Please don't get disheartened by "fans" that disparage players. Many are unaware of what it truly takes to be a D-1 player but have a love for the team that when they lose causes real physical hurt. They look for a way to vent that pain and post things that they would never in real life say aloud or at least not in a hurtful or distructive manner. I appologize on their/my behalf for anything posted that is hurtful. As cougarnation in general most of us see the big picture and are so glad O chose BYU if not for sports but for the environment that he is able to come to. My sincere prayer is that when he leaves Provo he takes with him a fondness of what BYU stands for and becomes the man that you and your husband so dearly wish him to become. I wish this for all our players, and if we were to never win another game (perish the thought!) but continue to put forth the highest caliber of men, I wouldn't hesitate a second to send my son there to play even if he were the #1 recruit in the nation(he would always be that in my eyes of course!)

God bless and lets put this one in the experience column and trounce FSU! Never, never, give in!

Thanks for your comments, Mrs. Chambers. I for one am very grateful that you spend time here and give us a perspective that we would otherwise be missing out on. Unfortunately people sometimes forget that these players, who are among the best of the best athletes are people too, and have feelings. It's like I said on another post, thanks to the internet and people like Jim Rome everyone feels like they have to have an opinion, or a "take," and push it so hard. It can't be that the team played poorly or even that O'Neil played poorly, but that he is the WORST EVER!!1! Hopefully we can learn to have real conversations again and appreciate what we have.

Here is my opinion.

If the love for Chambers on this board was less, then the antagonism would be less. From what I have seen, he doesn't deserve either--the love or the hate.

Honestly, all the love for him on this board pushes me to greater scrutinizing his play because I don't think he has done much to deserve it. Anything bad that he does is magnified. BYU has had receivers who have done a lot more than him as a freshman and a sophomore.

He has two seasons under his belt, so we expect that he plays better than he did on Saturday. Even though he didn't meet our expectations, he doesn't deserve our wrath. He is still better than all of us.

I still want him to be very successful. The team needs Chambers to play well, just as much as Chambers needs himself to play well.

Ms. Chambers. Most of us rational fans love your son. While he has his faults he has been very valuable to the school and team. People like to pick on him because of how outspoken he is but hang in there. This is what happens when you lose. All the claws come out.

the loss was most definitely not Chambers' fault. Air Force kicked our butts. In my opinion it is on the coaches. They made a mistake with the two qb system. Not Chambers' fault.

WE appreciate you here and we appreciate your son. Ignore the haters. They will always be there.

When we post we post messages under fictional identities and shout our opinions into a digital world where we sometimes forget that real people with true emotions visit. Nearly all that has been written in frustration about O'neill and others would never be uttered at a casual lunch if the speakers knew that the players or their family were there. But blessed with anonymity for themselves and ignorance of the identity of their audience, these opinions are shouted from the rooftops with little regard for where barbs may land. I know that we have family members of Oneil, Jake Heaps, Riley Nelson and Mike Hague who are relatively frequent posters here. I am sure there are others who I don't know of and still more who aren't registered but who lurk and read.

Thank you Linnette for your contributions here and for the courage to be here proudly for your son without the shield of anonymity both in good times and bad. Your son has a mother he can be proud of.

To everyone else, let's take this as a reminder that there are more than mere avatars here, and to avoid hurtful hyperbole and unfair characterizations not only of our boys in blue, but each other. It's something I needed to be reminded of also.

I will forever remember Chambers' punt return against Utah. We NEEDED that in the biggest game of the year and he came through. I will also never forget his downfield blocking when Collie was returning a kick. He about sent the Ute into the first row of seats. This TEAM lost to AF; not Chambers, not Nelson, not the defense, but the team. If there is blame to be had---it rests with the coaching... (I will also never forget Chambers' out-of-bounds catch against WA--no WAY a human being is supposed to catch that ball....)

+1 +1 +1 +1 +1 Jeeeeeesh!!!!! Lighten up my man! :bug:

This is athletics - not baking a cake or or building furniture. There are so many dynamics that are "beyond control" of players & coaches. The harsh criticism needs to be reeled in & thought about. Once you put it out there ..... especially in "printed form" ...... it can come across very harsh - even if you did not mean it that way.

Everyone wants to win. I guarantee OC wants to win badly. He brings a lot of emotion & commitment to the game. I like O'Neill. I like his spirit - feisty attitude - aggressiveness. I do wish he had hung on to some of those dropped balls. It's football. It's the nature of the beast. I cannot count how many dropped balls I saw yesterday in the NFL!! Go back (all you harsh OC critics) and watch the Redskin vs. Cowboy game last night! Man - NFL players dropping balls hitting them right in their hands!!!! It happens.

Linette - thank you for enduring our BYU idiots!!! My apologies!! Thank you for posting & all your input!!!

Linette,

don't take it personal. We are BYU and our expectations are extremly high, someone as visible as your son comes easily under attack. You're right, it was a team failure, if anyone is to blame it would be the coaches, terrible preperation in every aspect. Additionally, a few of the guys had a bad day, that happens. I like your son, he is a great kid and a great football player. Don't pay too much attention to the criticism, at BYU these kids will always be in the spot-light.

I have been waiting for this thread, and thinking about the ones that won't be posted , but felt deeply by those who have loved ones playing for BYU and disparaged after the loss. I disagree with those who assert that, because they (the players) are in the public eye, on the team, receiving a schollie, or that we are paying for tickets, etc., that gives us the right to say whatever we want about them. I'll guarantee that the Lord doesn't give us that kind of entitlement. He feels the hurt that we put on his children even more than their earthly parents do. We should think about that before we start throwing public poisen darts because we don't like how a GAME turned out.

Thank you Sammich and others who have put some sanity into this debate. Thank you Linette, for being part of our community, and for keeping a calm head when others around you obviously are not. Thank you OC for having the courage, as a black kid from clear across the country, fresh out of high school, with no connection to the LDS church or it's flagship school, knowing that it is a mostly white community, to come and add you're talents to our beloved team. I see your mistakes, I hear your outspokenness and recognize that at times it, too has been a little over the top. I also see that you have added a great deal to the team. I look for you and your teammates and coaches to turn this thing around from the obvious low point to some very high points in the near future.

Best of luck

Ms. Chambers, I for one am still thrilled that O'neil chose BYu when he could have gone to multple schools in the south and been very effective for them. I love it that you post here and have enjoy your insights and comments. Please let O'neil know that 99.9% of BYU fans love having him. There is a small but vocal minority that loves to find scape goats when BYU loses and he happens to be one of them along with Riley Nelson. Keep posting. By the way your post the other day in the TIC thread I created calling for his benching that choked me up (it was referring to Christ being our savior and that being more important then football). I have said it before and I will say it again. O'neil is a great football player but he is also a very nice/respectful young man that has a good head on his shoulders and that is because of you.

It never fails.

Endless and ruthless Chambers bashing.... followed by a friendly and mature post by his mother... followed by "oh gee thanks Mrs. Chambers! We love your son!"

any way we can rename this fickleboard.com?
