A Cougar Corner Meltdown

I am a little shocked to see how many of us are in full meltdown mode after the AF game. We are young and rebuilding, AF is a good team. We got beat.



Did any of us really expect to go undefeated in conference this year or contend for a BCS bowl?



Sure there could be some changes that could help us play better and build for the future....but I think all will be well with Cougar Nation.

Thanks, Captain. That needed to be said. Sometimes, especailly with a youmg team, when things start going wrong, they really fall apart and make it look a lot worse than it is. It even happens with veteren teams. A lot of people on here don't remember that Ty Detmer not only had some of our greatest victories, but some of our worst defeats as well. Some record defeats happened during the career of our greatest hero. The great thing about Ty was that he never thought he was losing, no matter how far behind or how short the clock. He NEVER gave up, even though some of his team mates might have. Let's hope that our present heroes can adopt his attitude in the future.

I can't speak for others but what I lament is both the lack of concentration and the QB play. I personally think we need to go to Heaps. Once they stuck with Nelson, AF stacked the box and Nelson couldn't do a thing. With Heaps in there they couldn't do that and so our running game was very effective. If it hadn't been for DiLuigi's easing up on ball security when he thought he was going into the endzone the game may have been very different. Heaps probably would have still gotten rotation and we would have probably scored a few times more.

I didn't get to watch the game as I was travelling back from Boston. I have no desire to comment on this game as 1) I didn't get to see it and 2) it doesn't seem like there is anything productive coming from any of these threads that I've read - just a bunch of hyperbole, denial and over-the-top blaming. From what I've read, this was a complete and total team failure, from the coaching staff on down. To try to point the finger at one player is simply asinine and inaccurate.



I will make this one comment on the QB situation. The coaches have now killed the 2 QB system and with it killed the team unity. I fear this team is now going to fracture if they try to return to the 2 QB system. I'm not saying the decision to go with Nelson all half was a good move or not, what I will say is that it was completely inconsistent with everything the team had done since the start of camp over a month ago. The coaches changed the dynamics of the situation and the team and who knows now what is going to happen.



Bronco needs to either return completely to the 2 QB system and make it known in no uncertain terms to the coaches that Jake and Riley will continue to rotate series. OR he needs to make a decision one way or another in regards to the starting QB.



It's funny, how two weeks ago, we were denying the adage that if you have 2 QBs you really have none. I still don't think that applies. What BYU has is a coaching staff that is incapable of making a decision. So BYU does have 2 QBs, but a coaching staff that can't or won't decide on one.

I don't think you get it.



The issue isn't losing to Air Force, it's that we're not giving the future of BYU football much of a chance. We're playing game plans which do not benefit us.

I can deal with AF 's rushing accomplishments. I can deal better than most with dropped passes and fumbles. That happens. I cannot figure out the strategy of going with Nelson and how the second half played out...I cannot figure out how Thomas stayed in for so long...So I have a LOT of patience with the players. I expect the coaches to do better and from my vantage point they got it handed to them....That I lament and distress.

As much as I hate to agree with captain dipshiz, he's right, everyone needs to settle down (and pray that the team plays better the rest of the season).

Whats with you hating to agree with me? Our team needs to keep their heads up and play hard. Us fans need to really be that 12th man and support them win or lose. It would be embarrassing if any of the players read some of this stuff on CC.



It would be nice if us fans could all get along as well, and not call each other such mean names, especially on the Sabbath...... :)

I'd be fine with a nine game winning year, but I think it could be worse than that if we don't make some changes soon. Florida State, Nevada (yes, Nevada), Utah State (yes, Utah State), TCU, and Utah are all going to give us trouble. Even Wyoming and SDSU could give us a hard time if they played well and we played poorly (despite how poorly Wyoming has done against us recently).
