Nelson did everything that was expected of him, which was: run a lot, and throw it a little bit. He ran his version of the offense well (until the defense adjusted). Our coaching staff lost us this game. We failed to adjust back. I have said it before that I don't trust Anae to run ONE offense efficiently, let alone two. That was my main problem with Riley in the first place, was that he didn't fit into the offense as scripted, and I didn't trust the staff to be able to write a completely new one for him (and I have stated as much multiple times before this loss, and before the season started).
You are all acting like Heaps is a fix-all, and he is not. He is not 100% ready to play. Yes, Ashworth should have caught his ball (completely gave up on a catchable ball = get him off the field for good), and that would have been a huge gain, but he is still getting surprised at the qb position. But if we are getting beat as badly as we were, and they are stacking the box against Riley and he CAN'T make every throw expected of him (hate to say i told you...), then we might as well give Heaps the game experience in a loss. There is NO EXCUSE to not play Heaps when Riley had only 1 first down in 4 series, and we were losing by 3 TDs with 8:00 to go in the 4th. Just absolute stupidity to not play him, and that is inexcusable.
THE THING THAT GETS ME THE MOST: I fail to see how Anae can't get it through his thick skull (and it IS thick) to not run between the tackles. Air Force's biggest defensive lineman is listed at 260 lbs (which means 245) and our O-line is 330, 310, 330, 310, and 322. How many runs did we try up the middle? But yeah, getting 3-4 yards a play is overrated. I would have traded OC's with Air Force today, they know to run it up the middle, with undersized lineman, at that.
