Sorry Riley, We are Not Utah State

It might have been okay for the QB to rush 20 times at Utah State, but that doesn't happen at BYU. If you have no interest in passing the ball then step aside. It's time for Heaps to be allowed to play. No more rotating. Bring Nelson in special situations. Heaps is the future.

Our offense is way too limited with Nelson in. Did anyone not know that Nelson was running a quarterback draw on 4th and 2? Air Force obviously knew it was coming. I have no confidence in Nelson's ability to pass the ball beyond 5 yards.

I agree completely. Before this game I was leaning toward Heaps, but kind of liked Nelson's intensity. After watching the third and fourth quarters, I am now completely in the Heaps camp, and am extremely ticked off that the coaches refused to give him a shot--especially when the game was still winnable.

Well said. Nelson was lucky to not have any of his first three passes picked off. He brings a nice energy to the offense, and I wouldn't mind him leading the offense in one or two series each game, but after awhile it appears that defenses can predict his moves pretty easily.

I also think that Heaps can't run the ball as Nelson. There is a good chance that Heaps will throw instead of run. I know that Heaps ran a few times in the UW game but like I said in another thread both QB's have their pros and cons. After one loss, we are critical of the players. I was impressed how Nelson kept playing and playing hard. I don't think he ever gave up. All players needed an extra boost of energy.

Oh please! Nelson never gave up? What is this, the peewee league? Does he get a "fake trophy" for it?

Who cares if Heaps doesn't run the ball as well as Nelson, he's a QB not a RB. Heaps really isn't that slow and he scrambled well when he had to in the Washington game. Also, in the 4th Quarter I think Nelson gave up on the receivers after all the dropped passes and tried to do too much on his own.

You are right about Heaps not being a good runner but our offense is kind of limited in that aspect since they expect a pass. I'm not saying Nelson should be the QB or anything like that. When I went to one of the fall scrimmages, Heaps looked way more impressive than Nelson. BOTH QB'S (and the team) didn't play well. I agree with you that Nelson gave up on the receivers, (especially when Chambers drops a pass in the endzone) so I think he was just trying to get something going. Unfortunately it didn't work out good at all.

What are you talking about? AFA (and FSU and Nevada and USU and TCU and Utah and the other opponents) stacking the box with 8 guys shows that they not only aren't expecting a pass, but also that they don't respect Riley's passing ability. Why would they?

Nelson can run better than Heaps. Heaps can pass better than Nelson. Both QBs made mistakes. Nelson should have tried to pass more, but as mentioned earlier in this thread, Nelson looked like he didn't trust his receivers. I wouldn't either after so many dropped passes that COULD HAVE been caught. I think that Nelson has a good arm but not as good as Heaps. If I remember correctly, wasn't it Nelson who threw two TD passes in the UW game??

NOBODY on the team had the energy needed to beat the AFA yesterday. Heaps out of the 3 or 4 passes he threw had one interception. Nelson fumbled the ball. Receivers dropped passes. Defense couldn't stop the option. It wasn't just Nelson that lost this game for us, IT WAS THE TEAM!!! Nelson was trying to get something going, but as said earlier, he was trying to do to much by himself.

And it's not like Heaps is the slowest guy in the world, either. If Nelson is a 10, Heaps is an 8. You are all acting like he is a dinosaur out there. Heaps is 18 years old, and can run faster than most of us can type.

Max Hall would not have quit throwing with 3-4 drops. Neither would John Beck. Or Bosco, Young, Detmer of McMahon. Riley did, and it hurt his team. No BYU QB should EVER run it more than they pass it. EVER. We are not built to be an option team. We can use it as a change of pace, but it is not our core. With Riley, he has zero pocket patience, will not go through his reps unless he has zero pressure, and once he pulls it down, he is running. He should move to buy time. Riley's got exposed and it cost his team. they guys around could have helped him more, but he could have given them more chances.

Perhaps this BYU offense is just too young and not as good as we think.
