We have to start Heaps ...

I really dont think that Heaps is better than Nelson at this point, but it seems like defenses figure out that nelson cant throw anything other than a dump pass or a 3 yard out after the first few series and they just sit make sure he cant run making him completely ineffective. Why was Heaps not playing the whole 4th quarter? He needs to be the starting QB, it just needs to happen.

Agree. Since the coaching staff already made the mistake of burning his redshirt, we might as well play him as much as possible.

I agree. Nelson is not capable of being a good full-time D-1 quarterback in our scheme.

Nice, I was going to post the same thing. Nelson checks his hot route and then he bolts and that's it. I think our receivers are terrible anyway but it certainly doesn't do anything for them to know that they are basically playing for Air Force with the way the offense is being run. 5 decoys are the strength of our offense?

Get Heaps in there. Let him build a rhythm with the receivers and he will no doubt bring out the skills in our new start TE whoever that is going to be.

Nelson is a quick fix, nothing else. Rebuilding is our goal this year and Heaps is the headman. Let's go and make the right call Bronco!

Disagree here, I think Nelson is good, but why not use Heaps if he is on our team and burning his redshirt? The entire team is rebuilding this year, so use it as a development year and move on. We can still obviously have a great year, but lets build for the future too... my opinion though, certainly there are overriding factors that coaches see that I dont...

He is not a throwing quarterback. Our scheme requires a throwing quarterback. My opinion has nothing to do with him as an athlete or a quarterback in a different scheme.

Not sure about this so long as our receivers are dropping easy catches. If we start Nelson at LEAST we have his legs as a threat. Starting Heaps will guarantee losses unless our receivers get hands that stick.

I completely disagree with the original poster and most of the responses in that Nelson can't throw.

Sorry but there is no evidence to the contrary. I don't think he can consistently throw the ball over 15 yards and he certainly doesn't have the arm strength to throw the out or anything to the sideline other than a floater. If he could he'd be unstoppable.

Well then you would be wrong.

He threw two very well-thrown passes in that last series, one of them pretty long if I remember. I think he has the arm, the problem is he isn't patient enough to use it (just starts running).

Bottom line. Air force kicked our butts. Our run defense sucks and our receiving corps is struggling.

I am done with the 2 qb system. Pick someone anyone. I think heaps is our best option. Byu's strengths just cater more to a qb like heaps.

Btw in the 4th heaps left the field for a while and then came back. Was curious why.

As bad as almost everybody was air force was simply the better team today.

Air Force came out and showed they were more physical today. They were even willing to take a number of personal fouls to come out and beat up BYU. They dominated us in every aspect of the game today.

AFA packed thebox with 8 guys all game and dared Riley to throw it on their corners, and we didn;t. Riley is a run first guy, and his passing is limited to 10 yard or less passes with the D not fearing his down the field abilities. he was dreadful the 2nd half, just dreadful when AFA schemed for him. His limitations were plain to see. Sorry, if we are going to lose to crap teams, let the youth play and learn. All I can say. Time for heaps, Q, Bryson, Stout and others to see the field more. And time for Uale to start over Thomas. Thomas was really bad.

. Yes they were long passes but uncatchable because they were out of bounds.

What has he done to prove otherwise? His touchdown passes that I can remember were catch and long runs, not him making a great pass. He is a great runner but if he is just standing back there dancing waiting to run or throwing very short outs and dump offs he is not going to be successful. If he is in we need to run the spread option like texas did with vince young. We cannot win trying to make Nelson a passing QB.

I think people misunderstand what I'm saying, and especially after a brutal loss like this I can understand. We live in an age of the internet and Jim Rome and every single opinion needs to be bombastic, all or nothing.

I don't think Nelson would ever go down as one of the top QBs in BYU history, but to say he can't throw a ball further than 10 yards? That sounds a little internet Jim Rome, especially since he hit Chambers in the endzone on the hands from at least 30 yards out.

Nelson was looking to run too quickly in the 2nd half, but he was getting no support either, the line was letting everyone through like they were Canadian border guards. His receivers dropped every single pass they got their hands on and his running backs were fumbling.

Nelson is NOT a BYU QB, and nothing anyone can tell me will prove otherwise, because his stats tell the story. Talked about this earlier this summer. but in Doman's great year for BYU, he passed 4 times to every 1 run. And people called him a running QB. Today Riley ran more than passed. I will repeat, a BYU QB ran more than he passed it. Sorry, but Riley is run first, and does not have the mental presence to be a throwing QB. I like his running ability, but not when he over uses it to the point a team can scheme him out with run blitzed to gaps, like AFA did today. Riley is basically a running back that can hrow it, not a QB that can run it. 20 runs, 19 passes and a bad loss.

This game was incredibly frustrating to watch. I was literally sick of watching nearly every play be Nelson running. I feel like we have some other weapons that we could develop.

Even DiLuigi wasn't getting touches in the 2nd half. Nelson Nelson Nelson...qb draw, drop back to pass then run it, over and over and over. If he did pass it was some kind of crappy 2 yard dump.

We need our identity back. Nelson is not it, period. He's average even for a running QB. Poor decisions, hogs the ball. He can't HELP but run it, he has to, he's addicted to it. He makes us 1 dimensional.

Also, I'm sorry, I've given Oneil Chambers amble chance to prove himself and I am constantly let down. He's plain and simple, not that good. He should be 2nd string. He just willl not cut it.

Anyone want to recap each of Heaps plays, his scoring drive, interception, and overall ineffectiveness. Who was QB when JJ killed the sure TD drive? Who was QB when Chambers dropped the TD ball? Is it Riley continuing to get us in and shoulda been in the endzone?

I really don't have all of the facts but this is what it seemed to be.
