It almost seems like it's a move to penalize the coaches in a way to avoid penalizing the football program. "Who are we going to penalize on the football team? All the coaches are gone" kind of thing.... So make the hoops team the sacrificial lamb and hope for some mercy on the football program (this is exactly what USC did to their hoops prior to the NCAAs hatchet job)
But as we know, where there's smoke, there's fire. Nothing that college teams have done to themselves has come close to what the NCAA eventually does to them.
The sooner the NCAA wraps up their investigations in Knoxville, the sooner they can head back to USC and give Kiffin his own due. I do not know what Mike Garrett was thinking when he hired that man.

I would not be surprised to see the NCAA go after Kansas and Kentucky soon. The AD of Kansas just upped and resigned and there have been a lot of connections to illegal recruting activities through the Pump brothers AAU programs. They paid off Mangino when he left the football program and people were appalled by how much he was getting on the way out; but the rumor there was that Mangino had dirt on the rest of the athletic program and those millions were ultimately hush money.

The university received a letter from the NCAA on Friday, notifying the Volunteers of an official investigation into the entire athletic department, including possible recruiting violations under former football coach Lane Kiffin.
The NCAA has interviewed current and former Tennessee football coaches and recruits as part of the separate investigation into that program. The university has not received a formal letter of inquiry from the NCAA about that investigation.
The football program has acknowledged it committed six secondary violations during Kiffin's only year as coach. Last month sources told ESPN.com that the NCAA has widened its scope beyond the reported appearances of hostesses at high school football games.
