Big East Football invites Villanova

Villanova has a 12,000 seat stadium.



It makes me sick that a team like Villanova is deemed to be worthy of the all mighty BCS conferences, or in other words Villanova is a "cream of the crop" football program when they aren't even playing at the FBS level and teams like BYU, TCU, Boise State, etc, aren't worthy even though they do play at the FBS level and have great success!!



The BCS system is an absolute joke and it is completely absurd that such a thing even exists in any sport at the college level.

This illustrates the problem with the BCS. Villanova, if they accept this invitation, will improve the Big East. They are a better team than at least half the league. However, the Big East gets the benefit of the doubt, 1st place votes in the poll for their teams, and a BCS bid if they win all of their games. It is the equivalent of the MWC adding Montana (another team at the top of the FCS) and saying that this improves our league because they have a good football program. BCS conferences can add any team they want regardless of whether or not the team is at the BCS level, however, the Non BCS leagues get grief for adding teams that have a long history of being solid FBS programs.

Not buying it. Yes, Villanova won the FCS title last year, but look at their direct vs. BCS schedule. They played Temple this year, and last year. Last year they won by 3. This year they lost on a field goal with 3 seconds left.



I'm a Temple fan. I watch a lot of their games, I think Al Golden is an awesome coach. I can tell you right now that Temple would NOT, even in their recently improved form, be anywhere NEAR the middle of the Big East. Remember when they actually WERE in the Big East? It wasn't pretty.



I think Villanova and Temple, based on watching them play, are are pretty even. Therefore, I'd say Villanova is probably good enough to be an above-average team in the MAC, but NOT an average team in the Big East.



While I do think it's kinda lame that Villanova gets an invite to an AQ conference, hopefully everybody here remembers that Villanova already IS in the Big East for all other sports, notably basketball. This isn't so much of an out-of-the-blue invite as it is a full conference integration.

"Where Villanova would play is an issue. Temple calls Lincoln Financial Field home. Sources said that makes it unlikely Villanova also would play there. Villanova Stadium has a capacity of 12,000, and the prospect of enlarging it apparently is not feasible. The NCAA requires 15,000 in actual or paid attendance for all home games for FBS schools. The attendance requirement must be met in 1 year over a 2-year period.

A viable venue is the new PPL Park in Chester, which holds 18,500 for Union soccer games. And there is room for a few thousand portable seats, as well as a potential for more permanent additions.

Other possibilities could include Franklin Field, and maybe even Citizens Bank Park (at least in November), now that Yankee Stadium and Wrigley Field are being used for college football."

I heard that Utah State was on the verge of losing FBS status because of this rule. This is part of the reason why BYU and Utah have been playing them so consistently over the passed few years.

what a farse... They have a good b-ball program and are in the little east for every other sport but why in the world does that qualify their football program for AQ status?

I for one am very happy about that. The Big East just became a bigger joke than they were. Nova would be lucky to consistently beat Wyoming, UNLV, and New Mexico. They just don't have the athletes and size to compete on a consistent basis with even the bottom of the big boys.

Since I still have the 2009 NCAA attendance stats up:



Villanova couldn't even fill up their 12,000 seat stadium. They only averaged 7,111 last year.

As far as the BCS goes, it is all a joke. Nova is dumb to pass up the BCS money, so stepping up gives them more dough, but they will take some beatings.
